Silky SMOOTH Vocals

- Waves Audio just released the Silk Vocal plugin. This is similar to the Soothe 2 and Gulfoss plugins. In this video I showcase how to achieve a smooth vocal by suppressing harsh frequencies that might be in your vocal recording.

aight bro, but you fail to buy a pop filter and or low cut your mic ? i mean come on
Yeah I own a pop filter, but I’m not going to ruin the video visuals by completely blocking my face with it. I use a hi-pass filter during mixing to remove the lows. Sorry Jim.
@@mixwithjerry @mixwithjerry I was a lil harsh thanks for matching the energy. You choose to favour video quality to the detriment of sound quality in your videos, fair enough that is your choice. Just idk wouldn't expect that for a channel about sound. Also you can get small pop filters. I recommend you go higher with your low cut
@@jimfoster3575 Thanks for your opinion, but I think the vocals sound good and I get many comments asking for the vocal chain for these videos. Everything is done intentionally.
@@mixwithjerry do you have a sub in your setup ? I mean if you can't hear those frequencies in the first place no wonder it sounds good to you
With kind regards
This doubled my depression and I gave it to the next engineer. 🥲
Some of my most popular vids were helped by people commenting on the plosives, glad things don't change much. 🙂
The fact that it is easy to get carried away.. LESS IS MORE
👊🏿
Damn this the go to plugin for all artist to enjoy! Great Tutorial!
silk and soothe 2 doing great things
yes, but the price makes a big difference, anyway soothe does good job on master, I don't know about silk on master chain
Definitely a game changer plug in! Just used it on one of my mixes! 🔥🔥🔥
Hey Jerry, you are a God sent ! I stumbled upon your content, and I'm so impressed with your approach, precise, and to the point. Not just any point but to the point of understanding what the hell you're talking about. I even admire your short takes. If I can grasp something from those, it just makes me want to subscribe because I know I'm not going to be fed any dumb shit. Everything is explained in clear detail. Keep up the great work, and thanks for all you do for the recording community.
THIS PLUGIN IS FREE UNTIL TOMORROW FOR BLACK FRIDAY!!!!! Thank you Waves!
Love this plugin ! Just installed it about half an hour ago and tested on some vocals and didn't know at first exactly how each function works, but I have a better understanding of it now, so thank you for this breakdown..! 👊
That's Silky! Thanks for the quick no bs video Jerry! =)
was looking at this plugin. I'm sold!
Your explanation was great ! So easy to understand. Thank You ! I’ve been hearing about this plug in and I know it’s a bit cheaper than soothe 2.
Out of curiosity , what genre would you say that song you demo’s fits under ?
If it’s yours and you’d like a professional female singer to sing it , I’d like to collaborate. I’m looking to release more and more material. 😊
We appreciate you Jerry 👊
Great video! Just got this plugin. Looking forward to using it on some new and old tracks.
Dopest channel!!
awesome!!!
love the song. Where can I listen?
nice vocal btw
I try it and its so smooth
And keep up the good content 💞
It sounds great! Thanks for the feedback 👍🏼
Hi Jerry. What type of mic are you using the video? ❤❤
Neumann TLM-103
danm that desser is nice
I like this plugin.❤ Sounds cool
LOVE THAT SONG!
Every example I’ve seen of this in action was with vocals that weren’t recorded badly to begin with..meaning the mics and pres used were clearly high end..
I think what would be more telling would be to take some vox tracks that were recorded on low grade mics with crappy pres (thereby creating a lot of nasty resonances which need taming), and see what it does to those.
Your goal should never be to record bad vocals to begin with. A good vocal take can come from a focusrite bundle in a home setup
I have a pretty basic setup a focusrite and at2020, not a good spot to record though. The plugin does PRETTY well but the furthest it could take my vocals is to a "rough mix" kind of state, good for sending quick demos i'd say
Well you can't polish a turd
Thanks! Song is sick af too.
That song is good asf
you should make a vid on the c6 multiband when you get a chance, I can’t seem to get a good sound with it
My Favorite C6
How would you compare it to soothe ?and should I put this first in my vocal chain before using a plug-in like Xvox pro or vocal rider ?
I’d probably put vocal rider first. I’d put this before a compressor though. Just my preference.
@@mixwithjerry thanks jerry!
ive used soothe and this and they both sound great i would def use this if i didnt have soothe but now ill be using both
Need to try this, thanks for the video
So it's the descendant of Manny M Triple D with some added features. Thanks for walking us through!!
I like that this plugin has a good visual representation of what’s going on frequency-wise.
Joer no para de hablar el chiquillo jaja gracias por el video igual
Is this song released on streaming ?
Yeah it’s called “Chains” - Jerry Gleam
@@mixwithjerry awesome dude, just followed you on Spotify! digging the message and sound! 🫡 Keep going!!!
Thanks! Great job!
Thank you brother 😊
Sounds great
Need this in a portable unit, like TC Helicon
Thanks for the video Jerry. By the way I like the song. 😎👍🏽
So do I even need soothe now ??
If you can afford it you can get soothe too cause even after this you might still wanna do some extra cleaning of harsh frequencies
thank you
i really need this plugin but i cant seemed to get it😏
hey man can i ask what ur microphone is?
Neumann TLM-103
And we have another soft pop song. I'm trying to find out if this plugin is of any use on a ripping rock vocal. If anybody has found a video demonstrating this, I'd love to know.
I may be missing something but , isn’t this similar to what Waves C4 does ?
C4 only compresses the entire frequency ranges. This is more precise and suppresses specific frequencies.
So i cant boost the high area, just supress
How do you compare this to Soothe 2?
I’ve never used soothe2 but this one sounds good and is free (only on Black Friday)
@@mixwithjerry Thanks man. Yes I've grabbed it so will give it a try next week. Looking forward to it.
ive used both they both sound amazing id use it if i didnt have soothe but now ill def use both
@@rjjtmtGreat thanks. I will probably get Soothe as it looks like it will help on my guitar bus to tame the sharpness. I can then use Silk on my vocals.
@@leemendez7876 soothe works great on everything so far for I’ve used this new waves on vocals and drums and it sounds great
Do you need an ilok for this
No
First of all, Congrats on using a song that has a REAL Vocalist singing with some Range! Not any hip hop or rap artist, with a 3 note vocal range. Got it for free this weekend, so I will try it on my next vocal mix project. I do have R-Vox on its own, but will try the built-in one instead to see if I can detect any difference. Thanks.
Very helpful than you Sir. subscribed.
So are you telling me I don't have to buy soothe 2 anymore? lol For real though. Any thoughts on that?
No you don't have to buy soothe 2 to make great music believe me.
Is not what he said. Anyways this plug-ins is optimized for vocals. Soothe is for any instruments and the whole mix.
@@josepe217 though it has the whole frequency band to duck as needed. Why wouldn’t it work on other instruments?
@@mjk5254 I would say the way the algorithm was designed. The frequency behavior of vocals are very specific. For example, I tried the silk on pads and didn’t work well, then I tried with Vastaus (the free version of soothe) and it fixed the bad resonances.
similar ao imager da ozone
I down loaded the plug-in waves block me. It said error. I tried it three times, they blocked me,
Hit their support team. They’ll get it figured out I’m sure.
4:40 Thank me later..
You should have used it on your voiceover to kill some of the sibilance 😂
Thanks for the opinion. I think my sibilance is handled well.
hey could you discuss the presets there are a whole bunch of them to pick.. as a newbie doing what you are showing is kinda complicated cause the sound is so subjective , so how do you feel about the presets are those any good? could I just pick a preset & be cool with that? @@mixwithjerry there's also the stereo & mono
@@mixwithjerry maybe you should listen again :/
I did but what about the presets they seem pretty cool what do you think of those? you tried them? @@officialWWM
@@mixwithjerryI don't think OfficalWWM likes you for some reason Jerry 😂🤷♂️
Warning! If you don’t already have Waves plugins, they will make you download a bazillion gigabytes of their crap in order to get this for free!
Pretty sure all you need is Waves Central.
@@mixwithjerry yep, and when you install that, and attempt to download Silk, it will also want to download 15gigs of other stuff!
yeah, true that's the shitty part.. like when I installed the free VST's for Muse Hub all we needed was Muse hub I think the best free stuff comes from Audacity there's no fuss with those peeps.. @@officialWWM
Yup smdh
@@officialWWMprobably the waves sample packs ? If so just delete them
Interesting fact: 70s vocals didnt need a "silk plugin" to sound the goat.
So we can’t use any technology that was developed after the 1970’s?
another "game changer" lol, might aswell call this "Soothe 2.1", companies will do anything to sell these underwhelming plugins... vocal plugins are starting to become the new compressor and limiter plugins... every single one of them does the exact same without any audible difference and ironically enough, OTT dog walks all of them effortlessly lol
This is a toy. If u really want to remove some unpleasant resonance in a signal well, use Soothe2. Or at least DSEQ3.
This plugin's so cool. Do you know if there's a hidden way to tell how many db of compression you're getting that I'm not noticing, or do you just gotta compress by ear? That's the only thing I'm not huge on, but I adore the plugin otherwise. I own R-vox anyway though, so I'm not too bothered by it. 🎛🎚
Thnx for this! Got it with Black Friday, but didn't think much of it. Now seeing this video I'm definitely gonna be using it. 🫶🏽
