Man, i'm from Milan and I was there that evening. Believe me, that was maybe the greatest music experience of my whole Life. Prince❤Forever. Thank you,man
I saw him live on his Lovesexy tour in Stockholm 1988. His 2nd gig on thursday, went to legend status among his gigs. Only beaten by his Purple Rain tour, also in Stockholm. 36 songs... the stadium danced like crazy. Prince, Sheila E, Cat.....
Yessssss …. Love this. When he died I was in Seattle. This version was one of the first live performances online, post-death. It was the wildest thing because his estate/ lawyers/ UA-cam/ etc kept taking it down. This version- seeing it pop up, be taken down, quickly- all in the course of a day. Anyway, love how he updates the solo in this version ❤
Agree with your assessment of his evolvement as a player and why. I saw it with my own eyes in real time. Always was my favorite guitarist due to the way he connected to the audience and the instrument. But when I saw him during his lowest commercial period at Lincoln Center, he was blending fusion and was simply more precise and technical. Not a missed note and absolutely perfect tone. His guitar work on the divisive, fusion heavy Rainbow Children album may be his best in studio work on guitar. His genre dexterity is breathtaking.
I’m so happy that this version hit you the same way it does for me. I keep unintentionally making you tear up lately between this and Radiohead. I’ll find something fun for next time. I definitely feel like he and the crowd are feeding off each other with this one, and that helped take this performance to a whole other level of greatness. I would love to do a get together sometime. That would be so much fun! 💜💜💜
JJ!! That was so good! New video for me! I love the Superbowl performance because, well, you know, magic rain happened. But this was better because it wasn't just a snippet of it.
Thanks so very much for reaching to this… I was actually at this performance and amongst the nearly 50 shows of Prince I’ve seen this was probably the very best one 💜
This had me tearing up with you Nick even though I’ve watched it many times myself. I agree with @JJlovesPrince this version is just on another level. Everyone goes on about the Syracuse version but this version just hits different. I have watched many massive bands play stadiums over the years, many of the biggest, and watched so many of the greatest guitar players but next to Prince they just cannot be compared. Yeah sure they can play great and shred and play fast but they just don’t have that raw emotion that hits my soul like Prince. The way he connects with the audience, the way the energy goes back and forth, the love going back and forth … I can only say it’s a spiritual thing I can’t describe! Nobody connects with my soul like he does and watching this again just reminds me how much I miss his earthly presence and how much the world lost 🥺😢 By the way Nick, you mention Steve Vai. Did you know that Prince was Steve’s guitar god? Steve even gifted Prince one of his guitars in honour. He really fan boyed about Prince as did many of the greatest musicians. Prince was a musicians musician and rightly so 💜 thank you for the great reaction. I better go wipe my eyes now!
@@JJlovesPrince have you recommended ‘Empty Room’ at Montreux to Nick? I know there’s one on UA-cam as I’ve got it saved to my playlist. It’s someone foreign that uploaded it. Nick really needs to experience that and some of the other clips from Montreux 2009 💜 I love ‘all the critics love you’ as he slips it into the set off the cuff and arranges it ‘on the fly’ … pure genius!
@ I haven’t, yet. I’ve been hoping the version with Elixir included would pop back up on YT, but it hasn’t so maybe I will request Empty Room. That is one of my favorite performances of all time.
@ mine too! It’s phenomenal. Like he’s on a different plane of existence altogether 🎸 massive goosebumps every time even though I have it on dvd and watched it 100’s of times.
@@elliottwardley1048 I’ve been hoping the version with Elixir would come back on YT, but that hasn’t happened. Some others have asked for Empty Room and that is one of my favorite all time performances so I’ll request it soon. 💜💜💜
This might seem a little blasphemous, but I think my all-time favorite performance of Purple Rain was at Montreux in 2013. And I say blasphemous because Prince doesn't play guitar and there is no guitar solo at all. But the way he sings it is just 😭😭😭
Name a rock artist better than Prince? Maybe Zep. Like what he said when U2 won a Grammy, I can do that kind of music, U2 cannot do what I do. Imagine some pop group doing Erotic City or Housequake, etc. Prince is our greatest overall artist. Better guitar playing than Stevie Ray Vaughn. Vaughn did a bunch of blues cliques.
Prince was truly one of the greatest guitarists.
I was there. Prince and Bowie were the closest to perfection I’ve ever seen live. And two musical geniuses too
Obviously a super talented musician who also had major stage presence.
Subscribed! Prince surpassed Jimi as a guitarist towards the end of his career is a hill I'm willing to die on.
I’m willing to die right by your side on that hill
Me too he could play any genre I am with you there
One of his greatest solos from the most exciting guitarist to ever walk the plant
fo real. no one has ever walked the plant that way ever again
I don't care what nobody say....Prince was fucking this guitar in this solo. Ya'll saw them faces he was making.

@JJlovesPrince - I'm here to help if you need me to track down a performance you've never seen. Lol.
@ I’d like that even if we don’t react to it 😂😂😂

1984 was my Party-Time....was great
I was tired of Purple Rain for a minute, but this version is giving me goosebumps again! 😭
He didn't grow he held back. He has a song he did when he was 16, the guitar is off the chain.
Love this performance ❤️
Just imagine what he might be doing today had he not left the planet.
Other songs are available.
This version hits me straight in my soul, that audience was lucky af that night. Wish I was there. O(+> 4EVR
I liked it
Hey JJ, you can't not recommend "Empty Room" from Montreal when looking at his guitar skills. Great reaction

Yes it’s like my second or third because the emotion he sang it in was just 👌🏾 and it was so different from other performances of the song
