Hi Lucy, how's your compost doing?
Sorry I didn't reply to your comment 3 months ago when you wrote it. I must have missed it. I love that you are fourteen and interested in compost. I started at your age too. A compost bin was my eighth grade science fair project. Did you watch Part One of this video series (The Ins and Outs) where I show my science fair bin? Nerdy.

@@chaddamp2894 That is great! My 3 young boys were all introduced to the garden (pretty much at birth) and they are just beginning their journey. Hopefully they will love it as much as you and I do and will someday be able to crow about their 60+ year love affair with gardening (and soil). I can't think of a better place for kids to grow up in than the garden. Thanks for sharing, and I wish you (and your garden) much success this season.

For super fast compost, ready in two weeks, make browns and greens very small; place it directly on the ground in a place in the garden that can use good compost tea; and when you water it, mix a tablespoon or two of molasses in. Cover in black/dark green trash bags and turn every day.

Depending on your method and source material, you can get it done in 3 weeks. This is by no means a fast composting method but rather an average one considering slow compost is longer than a year.

Amy thank you for all the good information you gave us. I started composting on the ground and pile it up with dried leaves , I make sure is wet but it had very strong smell and I see roaches running out of the pile. The same thing happens wit my plastic container ( does not smell that bad but I see tiny roaches) the water that drains on my 5 pound bucket smells very strong I read we should not trow it away instead pour it back in the bucket to put the nutrients back. Should I mix it and add more scraps?

Thank you so much for clear information. I've made every composting mistake in the book - this helped me understand what exactly I did wrong. My husband is dreading my desire to attempt composting again, so I hope the changes I make using these tips will get actual compost and not stinky slop!

      Hi Rachel. You are welcome.
I have made every mistake in the book too. What I have come to realize over the years is that composting is a process, not a product. Like everything in life, it takes practice to make perfect. As you gain more experience, you will be able to avoid mistakes and when you do make one, you will be able to identify what you did wrong and make adjustments. I am so happy you still have desire to make composting part of your life. Your husband will come around. Mine did. My husband is the one that keeps our piles going.

We are pedestrians and we save all our peelings and old bread egg shells the lot goes into bags and taken to our allotment, now I know what to do with them. I have been burning old bits of twigs and we get the ash and us this under our cabbages and runner beans and thy are very big now 30th June 2020. Love this programs.

I have leaf mould, compost, and rotted horse manure, and when they all mixed together when aged, I get AMAZING FREE ideal soil additive or mulch for my flower garden thus my flowers really take off in happy and healthy soil full of earthworms all living together perfectly. Thank you, it took a bit of searching but this is exactly the video series I needed and I’ll share it with my neighbours as the best way to start. Joe Jenkins (another composting guru) used the quick aerated wire fence bins in Haiti to help with all kinds of organic waste disposal after the hurricane, so seems to work for backyard composters and large scale operations!

Your welcome. Glad you found us. We like the wire bins because fencing rolls are cheap and the bins themselves are fairly mobile. The basic composting info we share in the videos, however, will work with any kind of bin (we also use pallet bins some). I don't think I've heard of Joe Jenkins but I'm going to look him up. I'm curious about the wire bin usage in Haiti and on a larger scale. Thanks for passing along the name. Good luck in starting your composting journey and don't hesitate to reach out if you are stuck.

Thank you for such an amazing set of videos. A few years ago, I purchased a tumbler composter and couldn’t wait to get started making my own compost. To date, I still haven’t been able to create compost that looks anything like the “gold” you’ve generated. I was so bummed because we just built raised beds and I was hoping to have some ready for this venture. After watching your series, I see some mistakes I’ve made. Since it is in a heavy duty plastic container baking in the hot sun, I think my greens and browns have significantly dried out. I made some compost tea with the very dry batch I was able to yield and I’m hoping I was able to extract some of the nutritional benefits. However, your extremely educational, user-friendly and entertaining videos have me wanting to go outside and build a wire mesh compost bin tomorrow. Thank you!!

    • @GardensThatMatter
      @GardensThatMatter  3 роки тому +1

HI Christine. Thanks for your kind words. We love wire bins, but they too can dry out if they aren't monitored regularly for moisture. Tumblers are convenient to keep the material turned and mixed, which keeps good air flow in the material. The one disadvantage of tumblers is that they are usually small and do not hold the volume a wire bin does, which means it is often hard to get the material to heat up properly. Also, tumblers are up off the ground, which means they do not have access to the microbes naturally present in the soil below. What we see often with composters that use tumblers is that they do not have enough bacteria and fungi in their mix, which slows down decomposition. We recommend adding a scoop of soil or finished compost to your tumbler every time you add food scraps (or other green material) to your tumbler. We do this with our wire bins too. A small scoop of soil on top of green material before we cover with brown material. This inoculates the material with microbes. And, of course, we turn regularly and add water when necessary. Your material should be moist like a wrung out sponge.
Certainly, we would not discourage you from building a wire bin. They are awesome and cheap. But that doesn't mean you should abandon your tumbler. And yes, the hot sun can dry out a pile faster than if a bin or tumbler is in the shade, but that just requires more water management, whether a wire bin or tumbler (or any other kind of bin). We use to live in New Mexico and we had to monitor the moisture in our bins (at that time, we had pallet bins) much more closely than we do now in Western North Carolina.
Thank you for watching our videos, and we are glad they are useful for you. Let us know if we can help you further.
      Happy Gardening.

I appreciate the fact that u consider others who may not have certain machines at their disposal.
The truth is some of these resources that many may take for granted eg tipper shredders, manufactured compost bins and even the commonly found item like dish washers are not prevalent in my culture. Amendments like bone meal and blood meal are not 'in' either.
I really, really appreciate the fact that someone considers those who may not be so fortunate. After all, these videos surpass geographical borders... ❤️

Thanks Debbie for your comments. We do try to include everyone in the process. The truth is none of the "modern" machinery and resources is necessary. Modern industrial society is built on the notion of convenience. Although we have access to machinery on our farm (my dad's machinery), we use it as little as possible. We try to do things in the simplest (and most sustainable) way. In the videos, we try to show several different ways to do things, sometimes with machinery and sometimes without. That way, people can choose the method that works best with their lifestyle and access to resources.
You are right, many people take resources for granted. And they often think they "need" these resources and machinery. This is usually not the case.
I would love to learn more about your culture and situation and discover things we can learn from each other. If you would like to strike up a conversation, email me at colby@gardensthatmatter.com (or) direct message me at facebook.com/gardensthatmatter (or) reply to this comment with another way we can connect.

Interesting video that provides good advice! Thanks for posting.
Short of using a dedicated "leaf shredder", I've tried many ways to efficiently shred leaves. The most effective way is to use a gas-powered weed-eater on whole leaves placed in a heavy-duty container (plastic or metal or garbage can). Depending upon how much effort you want to spend, this can produce very finely-ground leaves that break down quickly.
My preferred method is to pile the leaves on the ground and run over them with my lawn mower. For this step, I remove the bagger from the mower and do several passes. Then I collect the shredded leaves with the bagger attachment on my mower. The problem with this method is that if the leaves are too wet, the bagger is unable to "pick-up" the fine shreds.

I found a spot in front of someone's house, where they piled maple leaves, which break down quickly to begin with, and everyone kept running them over. I took a shovel and a couple of Totes, and loaded up a bunch of maple leaf powder.

I believe using a compost thermometer, 20in or greater, is key to determining the health of a pile, and clues one into when to turn so it doesn't burn.
