  • In a stagnant world that sees all change as a threat, reformers are hard to find. But the three characters theorized to become the three heads of the dragon and three dragon riders are all reformers at heart - Daenerys, Jon and Tyrion.

    I never tought about the 3 of them killing their mothers 'cause in the books (and also in the TV series) it's always Tyrion who's guilty of that crime... In the eyes of his family, at least. But, of course, Jon doesn't know who his mother was and Dany doesn't blame herself as Tyrion does, I think. You opened my eyes, guys!

    • @neuralmute
      @neuralmute 9 років тому

      Not at all. But Dany's mother *did* die in childbirth, and Viserys always hated her for that fact. And it's strongly hinted that Lyanna Stark died after a difficult childbirth as well. That is, if you assume that Lyanna was Jon's mother, and Rhaegar Targaryen was his real father...

    • @valkyriesardo278
      @valkyriesardo278 8 років тому +2

      Keep in mind that death in childbirth is very much the norm in primitive real world society, GoT is based on medieval feudalism. Rob Stark's wife was a healer and her skills were probably state of the art for that world. It is not a remarkable coincidence if these three lost their mothers at birth. It is rather more a miracle it if is only these three and no others.

    Dany is revolutionizing Essos. But what changes will she bring to Westeros besides her own regime? So far it doesn't seem as though she has a problem with feudalism as long as she is at the top. She did have former Meereenese slaves work for wages but will she go so far as to require peasants in Westeros to be paid?

    • @lestranged
      @lestranged 8 років тому +1

      That is a great point. Abolishing slavery is a big reform in Essos, but it is already illegal in Westeros so there are no chains to break. She did say she wanted to "break the wheel" which sounded more revolutionary than reformer, but now she has this barbarian army that will only want to rape and pillage if they get to Westeros. That's not reform. I really think that she might get there flying with a dragon, but her Dothraki army won't ever make it across the narrow sea.

    good video chaps :) i like how you focused on they're character similarities rather than them (possibly) all being targaryens as most people do. it brings a question to my mind - so whenever i hear people talk bout the 3 headed dragon idea they usually seem to assume the prophecy will only be fulfilled when/if all 3 converge, but if the prophecy simply refers to them being 'dragon reformers' as you put it, then the dragon could have 3 heads already, and they could be fulfilling the prophecy simply by carrying out reform in their various parts of the world. i dunno, just an idea :)

    • @neuralmute
      @neuralmute 9 років тому

      +Serena PS I was just about to write the exact same thing! The Dragon's 3 heads don't have to be in the same place at the same time to already be fulfilling their roles. And as outcasts of sorts, Dany, Tyrion and Jon are well set up to be reformers...

    • @MissMdubs
      @MissMdubs 8 років тому +1

      Good point - I think a lot of the focus of the fandom focus sometimes reflects the misguided focus of the medieval characters. For instance the fact that Jon is a bastard is relevant for working out what will happen as he continues to live under the current status quo but is completely irrelevant if he finds a way to reform it. Likewise the focus on prophecy is also a bit of a red herring - they don't need to be Targaryens to be effective conquerors and rulers, they just need to be enlightened, wise, and capable of grasping the power to do so and changing the status quo. As the guys in the video here pointed out, the three of them are all quite likeminded in their social values due to their personal histories and they aren't the sort of people who are going to be leaders under the current status quo. They are the sorts of characters who have to create the change the want to see in the world and that is why they intuitively seek power.

    • @MissMdubs
      @MissMdubs 8 років тому

      Also I'd like to make the point that since we openly discuss in the show and the books that the religious institutions are part of the political system we can agree that they are players in the Game of Thrones and prophecies are therefore not "real". They are good signposts for the readers though. I personally subscribe to the theory that the prophecies are all based in history - probably of science fiction origins (like Preston Jacobs talks about in his videos).

    PS.Oh. at 7:40 you showed a picture of Boris I of Bulgaria while saying that during the middle ages reforms are rare, but he is one of the rulers of Bulgaria to make some of the biggest changes in Bg history. He is the one to convert from paganism to christianity thus introducing the religion. By this getting recognition of the Bulgarian church and the bulgarian state by the other christian states. Also adopting the Cyrillic alphabet. All this helping the fusion of bulgars and slavs in to one unified people (thats why modern Bulgarians are considered slavic people)
    Just wanted t throw that in :D Best of luck guys.

    As always a great video of you guys.
    Finally somebody mentioning the connection that for all 3 'main' characters their mother died at their birth (only death can pay for life).
    I totally agree all three are reformers in their way, but i would like to add in a different degree.
    To me the categories, idealist, realist and pragmatist come to mind, which are useful when we talk about any politician and reforms.
    Dany is the idealist and in a way the most radical one of the bunch. She sees injustice and wants to end it, no matter what the costs are, or if it threatens her leadership in persuing her mission. In fact she is quite radical about it. Because of her idealism, she is not immediately concerned with the proximal consequences of her actions. She believes in her higher goal and it righteousness, but does not take a realistic approach on how to enforce it and does not take all the consequences into account. To give a quick tag she is a left winged visionary, but as critiques mention without a short term recipe .
    Jon i would judge as the realist. He does what it takes to get the job done and he is fully aware of the possible consequences. He does not act out of ideology but out of necessity. He knows that his actions cause a lot of internal trouble in the nightswatch, but he does them, because there simply is no other way in the situation. He does not have a facter supervening agenda, or a larger scheme in mind, but he just wants to get the job done, and if it means to take a seemingly arch enemy in, he will do it (and in fact does it), yet at all times he is fully aware of the consequences.He knows changes are need to be done, and he is willing to take the consequences.
    Lastly and for sure most complicatedly tyrion. for me he is the pragmatist/opportunist. He knows how to play, the game, but even at the start he is already cynical. He has no immanent vision of a greater good, but mostly practical wisdom. He knows how to get stuff done in this inherently bad world.. He effectivly knows how to initiate step to mitigate the apparent discrepancies in justice in small steps. He is an alchemist of power, that knows the mechanics and can get things done. But again he lack the vision an idealist has. He has arranged with reality in way, seeking small flickers of opportunity.
    I think it is 3 heads of the dragon, because a successful reform needs all three elements, the pure and naive idea, the realist that still will face the odds, and the clever power person that can make it real.
    You mentioned Napolean and i think to a degree he embodies all 3 elements to a high degree. He was a child of the revolution, never giving up its ideals, his military upcoming (and genius) gave him an sense of reality (we not gonna get all at once, especially with almost the whole of europe against us) and his pragmatism dictated to take small steps (unlike the jacobians and other more radical revolutionaris in france at that time).
    If you ask me about todays questions.... well i am overasked, too many problems at the same time and such a disalignement between what is theoretically possible, realistically achievable and practically manageable. -> real world more complex then GoT

    What binds these characters is that they are all Targaryans. Yes, even Tyrion. I think there is more to Tywin's 'no son of mine' comment than meets the eye. It is not just hatred towards his dwarf son. Aery's took a liking to Joanna Lannister that was explicitly sexual and he used to make telling remarks about her in court - much to Tywin's annoyance. There are other clues as well. Tyrion's appearance (in the books at least) is quite distinct - his hair is described as more silver than gold, and his eyes are mismatched.

    I know I'm late watching this video, but I really really really enjoyed it! Thank you for creating such awesome videos :) A small thing, though, I get really shocked and scared and disturbed by the random exploding head (not game of thrones, but something else) which came completely out of nowhere - maybe put in some more appropriate things which are a little less disturbing, loud and out of nowhere. Sorry if I come off as weird, I can handle these things usually, like in GoT, but not when it comes out of nowhere and completely out of context. It's okay if you don't change it though, it's just a suggestion. Thank you :)

    This one was awesome. By far my favorite ASOIAF youtube channel now. Only question is why did you skip straight to current events predictions instead of predicting what reforms the three characters in the books would fulfill? As opposed to the ones they began but perhaps failed to solidify. All of them only got a start on what they hoped to achieve by the time things began to catch up with them. What are your hopes for Jon, Dany, and Tyrion's endeavors in The Winds of Winter?

    Your discussion about the dragon having three heads casts new light on a discussion I am having on another video thread about whether Daenerys will be a ruler or a dangerous conqueror. I think she has the potential to be an Empress across most of the continents of Essos AND Westeros - she has the conquering capabilities and she seems to have the values to rule in the interests of the common good, but she has yet to learn the discipline to set up well-functioning, culturally relevant governments to act on her behalf. We already see Tyrion's potential as a Governor in Meereen on the show. I think if the three reformers partner Jon will bring about military reform (a united military force in Westeros to limit the power of petty kingdoms uprisings); Tyrion will bring about political reform (something akin to a Roman Senate); and Daenerys will bring about social reform. I can see all three of them tackling the issue of succession laws. The original Aegon the Conqueror and his sisters Visenya and Rhaenys ruled in this fashion with Aegon touring the kingdoms as a Figurehead to the smallfolk and nobles alike and Visenya and Rhaenys receiving delegated powers to deal with day to day matters.

    I like your analogy about the US presidential election year being our "Game of Thrones" time. I feel like this silly season is analogous to GoT, too, in that factions scramble and are willing to commit political atrocities of sorts for power, when all of that money and energy going toward turning people against each other could be going toward addressing the true threats to humanity, like climate change, environmental degradation and global poverty.
    Bernie Sanders is most closely aligned with my politics, but if Hillary is the Democratic nominee, I'll be bringing my pre-teen daughters to Clinton's campaign offices to work to elect the first female president.
    I like all of your bold predictions, in and out of the ASoIaF universe. In the GoT universe, I try to imagine what Westeros will look post war like in terms of governance (if the reformers "break the wheel"), but it's hard to get past what just the struggle for survival will look like for me. It's too soon to tell if reform comes before or after the White Walker invasion, but it seems like there isn't time for a lot of institutional change. I wonder if the reform will come out of however Westeros organizes itself to survive, if that makes sense. Have you thought about what kind of system a reformed governance in Westeros might have?
    Thanks for all that you do with your channel!

    With reform not necessarily being progressive but possibly regressive; could it not be said then that Baelish may be a reformer (for absolutism)? Or perhaps Sansa being his apprentice would soon learn more from him and be a reformer herself?
    **SPOILERS**
    • My theory is that, though Jon is released from his vows he won't become a "Targaryen" or legitimized. Rather he'll be a uniting force for Westeros against the White Walkers, with his sole purpose being to stop them. He'll make a deal with Baelish to maybe even help Baelish take the throne, in exchange for Baelish helping to stop the White Walkers and allowing Sansa to rule the North.
    • Tyrion may also make a deal with Baelish to return to Westeros and helping unite and rule the Westerlands for Baelish. Once Kevan Lannister dies, though Varys being the person to cause that, it may allow Baelish more opportunity to use Tyrion than Varys.
    The issue of course is that Tyrion is loyal to Varys for being a friend of his and helping save his life, so I don't see that part as plausible.
    • Though we have to admit Daenerys is an idiot, and with her character having eaten Aegon that can only mean two things. Either 1) Aegon was never going to win the throne, and neither will she; or 2) Either of the Targaryen children were going to win and they merged them because Dany was a fan favorite. I have to say I think it's more likely the first option than the second.
    • With the late introduction of the Greyjoys, I think the real reason is to stall season 6 for more content, as well as the fact that Seasons 4 and 5 overlooked the Greyjoys because they would play very little part in the overall story of Westeros. The reality is they're adding this because they want to make sure there's a full season 7, maybe even draw it out into a season 8. This would also give GRRM more time to write the last two books.
    • Another heavily overlooked factor is that early on in the books (and show), in order to make the marriage pact with the Tyrells, Baelish is given legal authority to act in the King's name. Now, the thing that stood out to me heavily is the simple fact that this was vague enough to cover -any power- the King holds, not just marriage. The second part that stood out to me was the fact that it had no expiration. Baelish still could use this written document to legitimize people, etc.
    Which brings me to Mya Stone. Though she is not yet introduced in the shows, I feel she's one of the glossed over characters GRRM described as important to the story, which the show runners would "regret" not bringing in. In season 6 they may bring he in with the other characters they've so far ignored.
    Where this comes together is the simple fact that with Mya Stone conveniently in the Vale, Baelish could legitimize her as Robert Baratheon's legal heir, and then marry her giving himself the Iron Throne. This has for some time been my personal theory.
    • I thought over your idea of Queen Sansa, but the simple factor that's entirely ignored is that Sansa has no claim to the Iron Throne whatsoever. The only way she could get the throne would be an awkward complicated process of R+L=J being true (which I hope to god is not true), Jon being legitimized and then gaining the Iron Throne (which would make no sense), and then finally Jon's ultimate death with Sansa then inheriting the throne as his next of kin (through his mother Rhaella). I think that'd be awkward and difficult to have happen in just season 7, make sense, and please the audience.

    • @JakeAustriaco
      @JakeAustriaco 9 років тому

      +twosquirrelly I doubt that. Historically you're looking at another 400-800 years before democracy. ANd keep in mind that Game of thrones drags out historical changes of events, that could translate to thousands for the Game of Thrones world.
      Though you have to keep in mind GRRM has said that just because characters make claims, doesn't make them true. We could be looking at a society that like the medieval ages probably lost a lot of original history and is only now beginning to try and piece it together through the Maesters order. For all we know the first men came only hundreds of years ago rather then thousands and all that current knowledge of history is just based on smallfolk stories such as the ones Old Nan tells.
      Regardless the outcome is clear as GRRM has made it. Someone WILL sit on an Iron Throne. Regardless none of the likely outcomes lead to democracy. Even Daenarys is an absolutist, but still a monarch. Whether it's her Dragons or the French Army, neither her nor the French Rulers could entirely rid themselves of their vassals or other powers.

    I'd like to note that Quaithe has already warned Daenerys not to trust Tyrion, which seems to go against Tyrion being a head of the dragon, since Quaithe is the one pushing Daenerys towards trusting in prophecy in the first place. I think the third head is Meera Reed.

Rather than giving the loyal Nobles power and establishing loyalty based on who has the largest or most skilled armies, Jon may very well intend to formalize the standing army of Westeros - starting with who better than the Night's Watch, the oldest fighting institution in Westeros outside of the machinations of all other Westerosi nobles - and take away the power of the Nobles to levy their own troops by raising the numbers of the Nights Watch ahead of time, thus starving the Nobles of their personal armies and allowing Jon to enforce the idea of "one nation, one army"; not just in practice, but in implemented law that states thus. And should the Nobility rebel, what army would they raise, and how would it compare to the oldest fighting force of the land?
    Tyrion I would see as some reformer of the political machines or administration of Westeros. Reward talent, not loyalists; formalize the procurement of talent and then distribute it outwards so that the state has a keen sense of awareness of local situations and talents. Through Tyrion, I would expect the Maesters to be fundamentally changed and empowered through reforms that reward their ideals and methods of knowledge.
    Danerys would reform the social order. Where people cling to the idea of religion or their geographical location as a source of identity - often to the detriment of other people - she would have the ability to turn people towards loftier and more ideal notions of equality, nationalism and playing a larger and more productive role in the fabric of society. Through her, I would see the Faith crushed by her dragons and all religions given a more equal playing field.

    Three characters, three heads of the dragon, and three dragons. Makes me think of the three branches of government in America. Each character could resemble one of the branches.
    Danny is the executive office.
    John is the justice and judicial.
    Tyrian would be Congress.
    a representative government is a big reform from serfdom. I don't think the book is going to do this.

      interesting. i want tyrion to be the third head, but yea, bran is a likely candidate. also, i just remembered that the three-eyed raven told him he'll never walk again but he'll fly. he could warg into a dragon. so dany is the fire dragon, jon is the ice dragon, and bran is the magical dragon. damn, i was really counting on tyrion being the "clever" dragon lol.

    You say that all 3 killed their mothers in childbirth, but that's assuming you subscribe to R+L=J. I personally think that Jon's parents are Brandon(Eddard's brother) and Ashara. I also think that it's physically impossible for Tyrion to ride a dragon, so I predict that Brandon(crippled one) will warg the dragon. I'm not entirely sure who the last dragon rider will be, though. Still cool theory, I liked the presidential analogies (my bold prediction is that Donald trump will win)

  • @Derekrife1

      Got Academy I think it's largely seen as crazy because the mainstream media does not report on the inner workings of modern Republican Primary politics. The same thing happens all the time on a local level, candidates take extreme right-wing positions on local issues, regardless of the often-purported "constitutional principles" that the Republican Party claims to stand for.
      Republican voters are incredibly similar to the members of the night's watch, they act on prejudice, and want a giant wall to keep out the illegals.

    Now Dany go to westeros and marry Jon and defeating the White Walkers. and Live happily ever after. Together with their happy family, three Dragons with a Dwarf. LOLZ, come on guys. Thats the worse ever ending. I like Tyrion and Jon as their own characters. I know Dany will ride Drogon. But I dont know about the other two. At first I want Tyrion to ride a dragon because of his dreams and Jon because of his parentage, but that would take out their character purpose. And the show will be boring if thats going to happen. Remember, its still a Fantasy story, but no happily ever after. Like Cinderella or Frozen. It's #GameofThrones

    The three riders being Dany, Jon, and Tyrion is too easy. Everyone thinks this. GRRM rarely goes for the obvious. I think too many are approaching the riders from a legendary perspective and not from a battle/combat perspective. Jon is far too valuable on the ground leading the troops to be a dragon rider, imho.

    • @moreeyecandy
      @moreeyecandy 8 років тому

      Janxel Or Jax True. But warging a dragon doesn't fulfill the statement that he will never walk again, but he will fly. Keep in mind, Bran walks now via both warging and in greensight visions. So when it is said he will never walk again, it means in his current physical body he will never walk again. So when it is said, he will fly, it is similar to the fact that in his physical body he will ride (like on a horse, which he has done in the past and will again soon). Only one way he can physically fly (in his physical body) and that is via a dragon. Maybe this hints toward an ice dragon, but for now I am betting it is on one of Dany's dragons.

  • @blinkblink2446

    you seriously think tyrion will ride a dragon? Dany and Jon are no doubt reformer. But Tyrion not so much, he is a really good executive though...

    • @purplegorilla9592
      @purplegorilla9592 9 років тому

      +Blink Blink Seems like there are some decent hints of Tyrion being a rider. Viserion is smaller than the other two dragons, is golden, has been described as at times looking like it has two different eye colors, and it is said his roar "would send a hundred lions running." And although this last part is probably weaker "Evidence" than the others it is the only dragon that is named something that ends in "rion" much like Tyrion, coincidence or not. If we're to believe Dany rides Drogon because of Drogo and Jon rides Rhaegal because of Rhaegar...seems like there is some decent plot hints that suggest Tyrion rides Viserion.

    • @neuralmute
      @neuralmute 9 років тому

      +Blink Blink I see Tyrion as a reformer in the sense that he would worry less about bloodlines (knowing just how awful his "noble" family are), and perhaps set up rule as more of a meritocracy. If someone is good at what they do and can do a job better than anyone, they deserve it in his eyes, regardless of their parentage. Think of how he's enjoyed watching the lowborn Bronn take out knights of great houses, and had fun shocking his father with the wild mountain clans he recruited. And his true loves have always been lowborn girls, too.

    This video was terribly disappointing: you spend less than the first 2 minutes actually talking about the show before going on a tangent about your favorite political figures in the 'reformer' category without ever actually talking about how it relates to the show. Folks watch your videos to hear more about a TV show/book series, not for commentary into heavy topics in the real world; setting up one expectation and betraying it by not delivering on it is extremely upsetting.
