AVOID BURNING WOOD WITH HIGH SAP CONTENT / learn Cleaner Burning in stoves with Natural Heating

In this video, Sarah-Jane Nash at Natural Heating shows you how to look out for pine type woods with high resin content.
She burns two small pine logs which are both Approx 15% moisture content in two eco2022 stoves back to back at the same time to show the results
The woodman informed us that if a tree is cut late winter, he thinks the sap does not get time to rise evenly through the wood and instead forms a high sap burdened stump / trunk near the base.
Despite being dry and giving off extreme heat, this stuff is horrible to burn and give of a mountain of smoke. It burns so hot, it can easily over fire your stove
If you ever see lots of wispy black smoke inside your stove but yet the stove is burning mega hot.. check outside at what’s coming out your flue / chimney. You want a clear heat haze - not all this pollution!
The problem here is the sap content. If you see these resinous layers, do NOT burn those logs. Typically, it’ll be some kind of pine / cedar type wood… so learn to identify the bark of these and split / check of in doubt before burning
Keep your stove and flue clean and clear. It’s our duty to be respectful of what we burn in our stoves and what they do to the environment

Thanks! This was really helpful when trying to figuring out why my chimney was doing the exact same thing.
It was a heavy fir log with loads of pitch. Burns HOT but soot is heavy.

Here in the USA in my state we burn almost nothing but pine I've only seen this problem with modern stoves. Intense heat in the fire box probably from the fire brick liner and very little oxygen. The secondary burn can't keep up with the amount of fuel being released from the pine. The really old round oak stove previously in the house never had this problem. The new modern stove has it occasionally. Modern stoves are beautiful and efficient but also have some flaws if you don't have access to hard wood.

I’d say that the log that’s full of sap hasn’t been seasoned long enough for the moisture and sap to evaporate. Keep those offending logs stacked outside and they will be good to burn given the correct amount of time.

Good video but does this not just suggest all these high end high efficient stoves are only as good as the fuel burnt.More important to buy good quality wood than spend 3k on an all singing and dancing stove??
