  • Royal Australian Navy personnel are getting a new, lighter camouflage working uniform.
    The new Maritime Multi-Patterned Uniform (MMPU) is being introduced across Navy, with some Navy personnel attending the Indo Pacific 2022 Expo (10-12 May 2022) in Sydney already wearing it.
    The Australian designed and manufactured uniforms have been a collaboration between Defence and industry and is set to deliver significant benefits for Navy. The roll-out of the new MMPU is gaining momentum and more personnel are benefiting from a lighter weight, more practical and great looking working uniform.

    WHY?? What for? I can understand the need for better fabric and it's great that it's being made in Australia but do you really need a camouflage pattern? The Army needs it to blend into the environment when they are in the bush. In the Navy though, why do you need a camouflage pattern? Do you need to blend into the environment? Is it so a missile won't see the crew and get confused because it thinks nobody is home? It seems like a huge waste of money really.

      @NGH87 2 роки тому +2

      There's a few reasons.
      - More professional look rather than the public seeing navy personnel in a random shirt and pants
      -Hides wear and stains from work (Similar to how the navy salute in a more American style rather than how the Army and Air Force salute this was to hide the grease of the palm when saluting a officer)
      -Security reasons, it would be very easy to enter into a Naval defence establishment without being contested if there was no uniform.
      -There's different capabilities for different types of camouflage.

    • @Rintaro88
      @Rintaro88 2 роки тому +1

      I'd imagine it would be of benefit for personnel to be camouflaged in any environment from anyone trying to look. Knowing where and how many sailors are onboard a ship could be important information for an enemy. Grey camo makes sense on a grey ship, probably the most likely place a sailor would need some concealment.
      Also, you might not know exactly when you will need camo or have time to change into it, just ask the Ukrainians...

    Years ago, in the 1990s, I was involved with uniform research and development with the Estonian Defense Forces Army.
    We found that the large vertical Zipper upper chest pockets design tactical uniforms were very important for the soldiers to be able to quickly stuff in and transport important gear while on the go.
    I see that the Australian Defense Forces have also smartly adopted a large vertical upper chest zipper pocket design on their new generation of tactical uniforms.
    This is the right way to go with which provides the maximum functional capabilities, an important aspect for military personnel's tactical uniforms.
    Way to go, Australian Defense Forces!

      Because the fire retardant actually makes a significant difference in weight, but the shore version actually has other differences as well, pockets are laid out differently as the sea variant has to have spacing for generally sea kit, sea variant has hi-visibility stripes on it, and it is slightly heavier then the shore variant. Meanwhile we keep the shore variant for doing work ashore, it's easier to work in the MMPUs than the whites, Less frustration with stains.

    Why does the navy need grey camo uniforms? What a waste of money. Apart from RAN Divers who engage in ground based special forces operations the majority of navy personnel are shore based in Australia or on board a vessel at sea far from the enemy. Camo uniforms are mainly used by ground forces to help in camouflage and concealment from an enemy force. The greatest risk faced from peacetime RAN personnel on a vessel is going overboard, in which case HI VIZ would be preferable to a grey uniform which would be hard to see especially at night. Trendy bullshit and a waste of taxpayers money.
