  • If you're learning to sing, there's a good chance that you'll quit singing at some point--even if you're smart, talented and driven.
But what makes the difference between a good singer and a great singer is that professional vocalists know these obstacles are part of the process.
After teaching 1,000+ singers, vocalists and even other voice teachers, these are the 5 most common reason singers quit.

I did quit singing, for many many years. It was mostly life hardships that derailed my singing. I always wanted to get back into it but never really acted upon that desire. And then, the pandemic hit. Some guys I was in a band with way back in another life, reached out and asked if I'd like to do a quarantine video. I said "I'd love to." That ignited the flame. I stated practicing for the song and in a couple of weeks we had a video. It's was ok, but I really wanted to be better. So, I started the whole UA-cam search for tips. I came across a teacher a really liked and reached out after doing some of his drills for a number of weeks. It's been over 2 years I've been his student and, I'm loving the progress! Singing is so much more enjoyable when you're technique is good. Singing was always uncomfortable for me because i was yelling, pushing and screaming. Now it's so pleasurable and my range is through the roof! I wish I had never quit but, I'm trying to only look forward. Seeing artists like Paul Rodgers, Steven Tyler, Billy idol and John Farnham still crushing it in their 70s helps me feel I could still have a few decades of singing ahead of me!

I quit singing for several years due to periods of depression, an increasing lack of confidence in myself, and certain health issues. Another reason is that I became disillusioned when I observed my vocal range change from being able to hit high notes, to straining my voice with those same high notes over time.
I decided to change this pattern when I found your website on Google, then coming to find you here on UA-cam. So, I started singing around the house and recognized that I haven't lost my voice after all. Today is the beginning of a wonderful journey in rediscovering my voice!

May god bless you always 🙏 I know what it is to have depression I have some health issues too depression anxiety and lack of confidence too I believe when it came to singing always thinking I sound bad or whatever but I realized singing is the only thing that helped me with all these issues I can hit a high note just that I can’t sound like Celine Dion or Mariah Carey and that’s my goal I wish to learn when I sing Celine songs my high notes are pretty high but nothing like a professional. But seeing this UA-cam channel has helped me too so I subscribed today . Remember nobody is perfect at all and the voice you have God gave it to you and you are who you are . There’s a karaoke app called Smule . It has helped me so much and best part of it all is nobody judges you there . I quit singing when I lost one of my parents I got into a big depression and just about a year ago I started singing again hopefully one day I can be a professional singer except minus the being famous part lol I don’t want that . God bless you and enjoy your singing journey.

I got the warmup course first and it took me 5 weeks before I could do the 30 minute warmup every day. I'm looking for the long game and at 62 years old it's something on my life bucket list; being able to sing the songs I want and enjoy my own voice. Thanks Matt.

I joke that I was born singing, lol, I can remember singing at 2-3years old- I'm now 51, so that's a LONG time😂 When I was young I wanted to sound pretty- I was naturally gifted with excellent pitch and timing and my father was a musician, so there was a lot of music growing up. I was fascinated when I heard him sing harmony with me when I was in 1st grade, and when he couldn't explain how he did it, I made it a mission to figure it out so I could be like dad😊 This was back in the 70's, there was no radio in our car, so I sang to myself constantly- I would sing close to the window glass because I could hear myself better( before I figured out the ear cup trick😁) and even at that young age my dad was amazed at the accuracy of my pitch. I spent all of my youth trying to sing pretty, sang a lot of styles of music, including more serious music like Phantom and some German and Italian opera pieces. I sang with my husband's band for several years, till I got tired of being a starving musician, lol, and concentrated on my business. Many years passed with only singing to myself or with the radio, then I had a life changing experience in 2017 and ended up getting back to music. I was amazed at the difference in my voice- I lost almost an octave of my range, and went from alto range to contralto! I love many kinds of music but the last 4 years I've been working on music for Renaissance festival- I had a unique idea for a fantasy act and taught myself to play guitar so I could accompany myself out there( can't drag the piano to Ren Faire, lol😂) and I found Filk-all that was the best thing that ever happened to me, because it taught me that being a really good singer isn't about sounding PRETTY, it's about sounding APPROPRIATE! I realized listening to all the filk singers that you can have perfect pitch/ timing/etc, but if you don't sound APPROPRIATE, it doesn't matter! The biggest example of this was when I learned Me and Bobby Mcgee ( not for Ren Faire, lol) and in listening to every version I could find on you tube, realized no one sold that song the way Janis Joplin did- and even though I don't like her voice, it's the RIGHT one for that story! Nana Mouskouri also recorded that song and even though she has a BEAUTIFUL voice, it was TERRIBLE! She sings it like it's opera- it's NOT the APPROPRIATE voice to use in that song! So that opened up a whole new level for me and I can now connect to and sing styles of music I couldn't before!😁

I see a ton of videos about singing really high or really low but not any about singing better in chest voice. I started singing just to sing emo songs that have extremely high vocals not a note below A4. And now I really struggle with my chest voice. I can sing really high really effortlessly but when it comes to just speaking level notes it just becomes a pain in the back

Also want to add…the main issue with SLS is your entire tone changes when you hit the bridge. It’s still connected….but the base of the voice is gone. At that point…is you are making nasal tones with some underlying connection. There are better ways to navigate the break using open throat, air, tongue positioning and laryngeal tilt that result in big full rich higher notes that keep the fundamental tone intact. Look at Pavarotti for example. Male opera singers for the most part have one register. There’s no break. There’s no bridge transition where their entire tone becomes this weird nasal sounding connection

Matt, I'm 51 and I love to sing. I definitely don't think I'm too old to sing. I want to learn how to do it properly so I've decided to watch your videos. I don't want to be famous or anything but I do want to turn it into something lucrative while also making a hobby out of it. Singing in Spanish seems easier for me, by the way, but I can also do it in English. Could I send you demos so you tell me what you think and where I can improve? I would love your feedback. Let me know if yes and where. Thanks.

I've been taking vocal lessons for 5 years, spending on them almost 1/3 yearly income:) and I got a lot better but stil can't get rid of tension at high notes.
    It's psychologycal thing for me.
I am not that great at feeling my vocal muscles.. And that slows down my progress so much.
Almost at the brink of quitting it all together

Hey Ramsey, Im taking vocal lessons from a professional vocal coach and we're currently trying to reach around an A4-A#4 and he says that I've to lower my larynx, but when I do so I start to feel tension in basically everywhere. I am able to reach those notes with a slightly higher larynx, what would your advice be?

I am about to quit singing. My voice was so much better and I thought I am going to have it until this stupid flu got in and destroy my larynx. A month ago I was still able to belt out a decent C5 and my E5 makes me goosebump myself. Now after recovery it's all back to square 1 with this hoarse G4 again. I was hoping stop singing for 2 weeks will help it recover but it is not recovering. Is puberty just hit me at the age of 32 again?

I can run riffs much better than before and my vibrato is much more stable than before but my range is worse. I cannot do mix voice be it light mix or belt, all kind of mix would just slip and part my larynx. My headvoice sound easier though, I can get to D6, my previous ceiling was C#6

Was just wondering, my chest voice range is E2-D3 then I flip to falsetto at E3 and can go up to E5 with mix. Is it possible for me to increase my chest voice range by an octave to D4 or by two octaves to D5? So that I can hit D4 or D5 with pure chest without falsetto or mix?

@5:20 Y'know... I've been curious what a vocal coach's take might be on public/popular artists who've been in the business for decades. Kinda like a time-based analysis. For example: Justin Bieber has been in the spotlight since his tween years, but had an apparently uninterrupted career. Did expert shepherd him through the awkward years with grace? Michael Jackson, the Hansen boys, Aaron Carter, Ashlee Simpson? I think it could be a fruitful field of inquiry/biography.

Why don’t you post any videos of you actually singing an entire song? The proof is in the pudding. To be honest…you don’t sound great when singing the line or 2 you randomly do here and there. Let’s here an actual song you sing. Otherwise…it’s hard to trust your factory assembly line SLS teaching certificate.
