- Link's Awakening was my favorite game as a kid and I wanted to create the Ballad of the Windfish with the real instruments but didn't have the instruments or the experience.16 years later I was finally able to create this.

FAQs:
➖ I didn't include ocarina because it's never actually a voiced instrument. Link just mime "plays" it to get the ball rolling 😂
➖ Conch shells generally only play one tone. In the game the "Conch Horn" is given the first melody line of the ballad. Rather than try to achieve this through pitch shifting I decided just to play the line as a single note.
➖ For some ungodly reason the "Full Moon Cello" in the original game is 2 octaves above where I played it - in the upper violin register. I thought it would sit better in the lower register and blend with the conch better.
➖ The name "Wind Marimba" always gave me the idea that it was closer to a vibraphone. But this was my own take on it.
➖ "Organ of Evening Calm" is most likely a harmonium - so to achieve this same "reed" quality I thought accordion would fit just fine.

Epic!
Absolutely fantastic! You are an amazing and talented musician!
I like how using a real conch shell really changes how it sounds. Also, that surprise orchestral ending. Lovely job!
Glad you appreciated the real conch and the orchestra :) thanks maugos!
Thank god for the ending. The conch shell really burst my bubble. It sounded so nice when you added all the other instruments at the end.
CAN WE ACKNOWLEDGE HIS EDITING? Ugh HIS MIND!!!!!!!!!!
omggg
@@InstrumentManiac i loved the segments where link got the instruments and you played each segment perfectly tuned to the part of the ballad they play
and this video is one of my favorite
This is perhaps the most epic thing I have ever seen inspired by the Legend of Zelda. Not so much the recreation, but that you dedicated yourself to mastering so many instruments in order to do so. You are to be applauded.
Thanks Charles! Making it felt like a proper bookend to all the time I spent playing the game as a kid. I'm happy it's complete :)
@@InstrumentManiac Back when I played the original gameboy version, I was impressed that the game-makers were able to mimic instrument variety and multiple instrument music so well given that they were working with 8-bit sound at best. But I was never inspired to do something like this. You, sir, are a polished gem among Zelda fans.
@@InstrumentManiac I think those of us who played the game have been searching our whole lives in vain for a bookend that doesn’t exist.
*Grumpy Wind Fish* - "WHO'S MAKING ALL THAT GOD DAMN RACKET?!?"
Lol I was expecting a French Horn but then it was a conch 😂
Haha I chose to try to make everything "real"
@@InstrumentManiac late comment im aware but uh, if you were going for that why didnt you include the ocarina?
There’s never audio of the ocarina being played in the arrangement.
@@InstrumentManiac was prolly added in the remake then, i never beat the gameboy one
@@entermatestar9116 the ocarina isnt actually played in the remake either, its just aesthetic i guess
15 years of those lessons were spent on the triangle alone, so they say
The hardest instrument to grasp
This might be the best video on UA-cam.
Ahh happy you like it!
Link had a hard time going in dungeons after dungeons to break the giant egg and awaken the windfish when he just need to find this guy.
Kidding aside, this is so good.
Me: playing an instrument is so hard.
Luke: hold my camera
😂😂😂
I couldn't even play the Triangle...
That was amazing. Got goose bumps all over my windfish body.
Thanks Hannes!
Can we give this man a $&?!ing trophy?!
Willing to accept any and all trophies thank u 😂
@Theodore Arndt OWAH XD I didn't expect a Korok in the replies!
OH MY GOD!! THANK you for making this!! Ever since I learned of Links Awakening a few years ago, I have been looking around for a version of Ballad of the Windfish where all the 8 instruments are played for real! YOU HAVE ENDED MY LONG SEARCHING, AND I SALUTE YOUR YEARS OF INSTRUMENT PRACTICE!! My capslock shouting may seem unnecessary and exaggerated, but I am genuinely overjoyed I can now show my friends what the song sounds like IRL once all the instruments are brought together before the egg!
Oh, and I can't wait to hear what it'll be like in the remake. If we are lucky, it'll be a lot like the resulting music of this video :D
Ah reading your comment brings me joy because that's exactly how I felt about it!! The other reason I did this whole thing is that the remake *could* use different instruments (during production of the original the instruments were switched around quite a bit). So I thought someone should at least do a version with them. Happy you enjoyed it! :D
Well, if a giant egg ever appears on top of a mountain we know who to call.
It's a good skill to have just in case
But wait... if one appears, will we be in a dream, or will we _be_ the dream...?
AAAH CONGRATS ON FINISHING THIS PROJECT! THIS WAS SO WORTH THE WAIT AND HAS MADE ME EVEN MORE EXCITED FOR THE REMAKE. WHO KNEW IT WAS POSSIBLE TO BE MORE HYPED FOR ITS RELEASE???
AHH THANK U RIGHT!? THIS REMAKE IS GOING TO BE ✨✨🔥🔥
Thank you for doing this, this is what look for when I search for soundtrack remaster
Ah thanks for the kind words Luis! Yes I figured I should do it before the OST drops 😂
Woah, this is amazing, this needs WAY more attention, I-
wait
*That's how you play a triangle!?*
A lalafell!!!!!!
It is!! Cajun triangle technique - usually a bigger triangle but they didn't exactly give dimensions for the Coral Triangle 😂
I love the little small victory sound effects like when you get a heart container or pick up an instrument Zelda games are the best
marin would be proud
Wow this is a very underrated video that was performed and edited superbly.
Thank you! I thought at least someone should make a version with the real instruments and I just happened to have most of them 😂
I admire you Luke! I play a lot of wind instruments like flute, ocarina, recorder, didgeridoo, etc. And piano, bells, melodica, and sort of harp. Still having trouble with strings like guitar and violin especially lol. But I'd love to learn more and maybe jam together you're awesome :D
Thanks Rey - best of luck with your instrument journey!
An enormous wave of emotion hits me like a brick at 2:25. Just the best version of this piece I have heard.
This brought tears to my eyes. :'3 bravo sir.
This needs more views!!!! ahhh!
😊😊😊
I listen to this whenever i’m in a bad mood because it always lighten me up
but because of the editing and the orchestra moment at the end, i can’t help but get overwhelmed and start crying loool
Ahh that's great to hear! I'm releasing a full remastered version on itunes/spotify next week :)
This made my 33 years of life worth everything
Love not just the results here but the fact that this was attempted at all with the real instruments.
I'm not crying, you're crying!
Well I hope this is all the good kind of crying!
@@InstrumentManiac yes, it is! All those bittersweet feelings of reaching the end of the journey and all that implied with it, you made me feel them! Thanks sir!
God, this video just let me speechless... Ballad of the Windfish might be my favorite song from a Zelda game, if not from any video game ever, and you made a masterpiece of a remaster. I can't imagine all the work you put on this, but it was worth it, for every second of the video. Thank you mister.
P.S. : The editing is also god-tier, nicely done
Thanks Nikoko!
He plays the conch so majestically
Ugh I always come back to watch this and my eyes water every time. It's so wholesome and beautifully done, one can tell how much this project means to you ♥️
Thanks for watching Christopher! I'm glad other people appreciate the tune ^_^
This is beyond beautiful. I'm in tears. Link's awakening was the first Gameboy game I hade.
I'm legitimately crying right now. Thank you.
Ah hope they were good tears 😊
this is my favorite song in the entire series!!! what a pleasure it is to hear such a fantastic arrangement like this, impeccable work dude 😭 also the actual conch horn was such a charming touch as well !!!!!
Brings a tear to my eye
I can't be the only one who cried 😭😂
Im not crying, its just some magic powder in my eye
:')
Nostalgia overload! You really did justice to this beautiful piece of music. Congratulations!
I was very impressed that you used the genuine 8 instruments then moved onto your own take with the superb cellos and violins. Would have loved to hear more of those! Honestly I could listen to Ballad of the Wind Fish all day.
Anyway, great work. Keep doing what you're doing. And keep coming back to these songs! They're a part of who we are.
Ahhh this means so much thank you!!
Righhtttt??? I'm actually probably going to cover it *AGAIN* down the road but adapt it in a bossa nova style or something. It's such a versatile melody :D Thanks bud will def do more LA songs!
I can’t believe there was an end game for the conch shell other than being a meme in the instrument collection videos. Truly played the long game. (This is also gorgeous and i bet it’s so satisfying to finally have this done!)
Omg YES you connected that. I bought it originally a few years ago specifically for this cover when I was planning it but then didn't have everything else so I just kept on using it in the dumbest possible way during those collection vids 😅
Thank you!! It's a huge weight off that I can put it to rest 😊
@@InstrumentManiac It's spectacular that you stuck with it. The fact that it can not reproduce the melody that it performs in the game is kinda outweight by the pure dedication here XD
This literally put me in tears. Masterful, just absolutely beautiful. Oh my god.
😊😊😊
Aaaah! All the nostalgia flowing back to me... the sweet memories and Marin!
Glad to hear Samuel!
So impressed that you pulled this off. Truly incredible work.
Thank you Peter!! I'm just happy it's done with and I don't have to think about how to pull it off any more 😂
Holy... This is so underviewed.... Do you know how much I wanted this??! I guess so since you actually went and LEARNED AND ACQUIRED AND PLAYED all the instruments.... Wow. Just wow. Thanks.
Aw thanks! I was just happy to have finished the project even if not many ppl watched it :)
at long last a perfect orchestrated version of the song as it was meant to be. i am in tears now, thank you so much! you have no idea how long i have been looking for this...
Aw glad to hear!
I've been of the mind for several years that Isoa Takahata was the greatest Ghibli creator and could have made a Zelda feature. Seeing this really makes me feel like he could have created the perfect adaptation of Link's Awakening.
Incredible. I've always felt that we got shortchanged on hearing the ballad with all the instruments in game. You work through all these dungeons to collect these instruments, and then can't even hear it more than the one time. I loved getting a new instrument and going to see where it fit in the melody after each dungeon!
I got lost in your music world and didn't want to leave. Thank you for giving me such special moments through these incredible songs!
Cant believe I never found this until now, ballad of the wind fish is my all time favorite video game song.
The ballad of the windfish always makes me cry, thanks again my guy lol
This does bring tears to my eyes
That sound effect is going to hunt me in my sleep
Four years later and this still punches me in the feels. Your arrangement is so spectacular.
This video is criminally underrated. This man put in years of hard work and made a beautiful rendition of the Ballad of the Windfish and honestly I think it deserves at least top 100 youtube videos of all time
Link’s Awakening I’d one of my favorite Zeldas; and I have always
Wondered what it would sound like IRL since 93! I admire your dedication, thank you so much for sharing!!
One of the moment beautiful versions ever. And it is the true version.
I can't stop crying. 😭
One of the most badass VGM covers on youtube. This cover made me quite emotional.
thanks Ash!
Seeing you play the irl instruments of the Links Awakening's instruments wants me to learn how to play like how you did, all I know is that it's gonna be a long journey til I get as good as you, thank you for inspiring me to play more types of instruments
You should go for it!
Thank you for capturing the solos from the conch and the cello.
For sure!
Link’s Awakening was one of my first Zelda games I played. I still come back to this video because of just how good it is, thank you for making it!
This might just be the coolest musical video I've ever watched on UA-cam
thanks robert!
I thought to myself, hm, I wonder if anyone has ever done a proper instrument cover of the Windfish Ballad? I searched, I found this, and I am literally crying because it's so perfect. I have loved Link's Awakening for over twenty years and this was just so amazingly beautiful. Thank you so much for this.
Thanks for the kind words I'm glad it had such an impact 😊
Omg amazing job, you must have dedicated so many hours on this masterpiece! ✨✨✨
Ah thank you Moises! The hardest part was actually recording the individual instruments at the beginning 🤣 after that it was pretty smooth sailing!
Thank you for making this. As a kid, I've always loved the music from the game.
Muito bom cara! Você tem muito talento haha. Acabei de finalizar o jogo, e estava procurando por uma OST do jogo, e achei seu canal.
harps are ridiculously pricey investments so that's some impressive dedication to the craft!! i applaud u, sir
haha they sure are
Lump in my throat from holding back the tears, I loved this ty so much
this is definetly one of the best videos i've ever seen
This is absolutely amazing. The video deserves WAY more views.
Link's Awakening wasn't the first game I ever played, but it was the first game that was *mine* that I ever played. Second game I ever finished (behind Metroid 2) as well. This song has always had a special place in my heart. Honestly there's too many feelings to put just one or two in a comment, so I'll just say... you're not the only one who had their wish granted with this. Thank you.
Thanks Jet this really brightened my day! Love that a lot of people connect over this game and its incredible music ^_^
Man, this gets me thinking back. Link's awakening was my first game too. Thank you.
happy to hear ^_^
Full body chills at the end when he pulls out the clarinets, flutes, and violins, which were HIDING THE ENTIRE VIDEO. I am in total awe of your otherworldly talent!!!!!!
Thank you AO!
I cried at this part and I don't know why....It's like I heard the most beautiful music of the angels or something
GOOSEBUMPS LUKE. One of the greatest GB games of all time
This deserves more views.
Imagine Zelda was the only reason he learned how to play instruments lol.... this is amazing by the way
Not too far off tbh 😂
This was so beautiful and cool. Love the editing. Awesome to know that it was a sixteen year pay off. And the performer is handsome to boot.
After 2 years, this still hits ya in the feels.
Great work Luke.
I love it! One of my favourite games.
Glad to hear!
This goes to show the dedication that people have. I see this game as an inspirational game, mostly through Let's Players like Chuggaaconroy. This is the sweetest project I've ever seen. 16 years. You are amazing.
Thanks for the kind words bud! I'm glad that everyone can bring a little something different to appreciating the game in this community :)
Note: I now have played the switch version and I now know what it's like to cry thanks to a video game.
Thats one hard core zelda fan right here !
How did I miss this??? Gives me ALL THE FEELS. The ability for you to play the conch horn is truly mind blowing, Luke.
You really caught the feeling that the games music gave me back when i played it as a kid. Thank you for this
ONLY 2K LIKES, THIS IS UNDERATED! Seriously, this is amazing! Love it!
The Full Moon Chello a Reagle sound
The Conch Horn echos of the past
The Sea Lilly's Bell the Chime of Innocence
The Surf Harp a Cascading Lullaby
The Wind Marimba Notes of Mystery
The Coral Triangle The Dings of Preparation
The Organ of Evening Calm a Melancholy Reprise
The Thunder Drum the March to the Finale
these 8 instruments are a ballad of dreams personified the happiness of sleep and the sorrow of the dream finally coming to an end may you one day rest again mighty Wind Fish
It gave me chills...from the beginning till the end...sooooo good
Thanks Reinhold!
It's actually a crime how little views this has. What an amazing video.
Thank you so much for creating this cover. It was so beautiful. The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening is my Favorite Zelda game and I love "Ballad of the Wind Fish". Thank you for making me so happy.
Ahh thank you for the kind words! It really is a wonderful game
So am I am not the only one that was sucked into the world of video games, and Zelda with Link's Awakening?
That game has been the first video game for many.
I saw this before, but decided to watch it again since I completed the game (the original). This cover is the perfect way to end the game. Great work on this!!
Thanks Jonah! Haha I have to agree with you, it's nice seeing the real things finally
The fact that you used the conch! Mad respect dude!!!! 👏
Thanks Carlos!
Oh my gosh, you did it
Yessssssss it's finishedddddddddd 😄
Idk why but the part where you were in the egg i found funny a little i smiled
16 years boy link must be tried after that adventure!
I've watched billions of videos, but I've liked very few. This is fantastic! So thank you for making, and sharing!
Thanks for stopping and listening I appreciate it 😊
i've never seen a single video that makes me want to subscribe to someone.
you have earned this : )
My favorite Zelda melody literally brought to life.
You've made a masterpiece first time I watched this I cried in a good way
The shell horn overtook a lot but that is how it had to be in the real
True! Real conches just don't have the kind of flexibility that game wrote
this is amazing and really nostalgic for some reason
Absolutely beautiful! You have a talent for many instruments. Continue what you do best. Your work should be loved greatly.
Thanks for the words of encouragement Shaun!
No problem. I suggest you doing the "Donkey Kong Country" series next. I believe in you if you do.
One of the best soundtracks 😩 Blessed to see this masterpiece
This is the best thing i've seen in my life
