    I remember seeing this software on the little shelf behind the till where they kept other esoteric artifacts such as green stuff and those GW branded hot wire cutters for XPS foam. I always wanted to give it a go but never did (Lone Wolf's Army Builder was cheaper and better, or so I was told), so this has actually been really illuminating. Like a tiny, unresolved mystery from my past has finally been uncovered.
    Cool video as always!

      It's always a good feeling when an artifact from your formative years that still, somehow, maintains real estate in your brain gets conveniently resolved _for you_ without needing to go out of your way to investigate.
      Like, "Oh, THAT'S what that was."

    I had this as an 8 year old, got it at a yard sale. After seeing my cousin play Dawn of War (and being a dumb child) I thought that’s what it was. And I was SO frustrated I wasn’t able to make my army fight after creating it. *nostalgic crying ensues*

    I wasn't paying much attention to the miniature gaming market in the early 2000s but I remember generating a character for a 3rd edition D&D game around 2000 or 2001 using what I think was an official character generator program, so these sorts of programs may have been something that big tabletop gaming companies were starting to think about at the time.

    • @xerxeskingofking
      @xerxeskingofking 2 роки тому +3

      i remember playing with something similar for 3ed/3.5 DnD as well, i think thier was a wave of experimentation going on then, but the technology wasn't QUITE their to replace pen and paper just yet. it was a little too clunky, not quite convenient enough, limited by the UI design of the time, and like they say in the video, you still needed to print it, making it more of a way to get a nice list/character sheet than anything else. The idea kinda fell by the wayside until the widespread adoption of smartphones made it practical to have the electronic copy stay electronic and still be accessible.

      About the sane time there was also heavy metal/heavy metal pro for designing mechs in battle tech (also vehicles, aerospace stuff/spaceships and even protomechs and battle armour).
      HM Pro was awesome because it also came with the data for all the existing mechs and you could print out the full game sheets for any mechs you were using

    • @EthanKristopherHartley

      You're absolutely right, it wasn't just miniatures games. I had the V:TM version because I decided I was going to be the futuristic ST. 😂
      It was used to generate one NPC and then I realised that it was quicker and easier to just do it myself. So it became a very expensive character sheet printer! 😁

    When I was a kid I inherited a bunch of codex for armies I didn’t have. I used to sit for hours writing up dream armies. I’ve been known to do this on BattleScribe too but as a grown assed man with a job. I now have the money but need to pay bills. I’ve learned that making these dream lists just leads to financial hardship and boxes upon boxes of unbuilt minis.

  • @xGamermonkeyx

    Super interesting video as always my sweet angels. I love hearing about these sort of weird cultural artifacts, and you both always deliver the info with fun and style!
    Watching this as well really makes me realise how little I know of the older editions as well. I dropped out of the hobby at the end of 3rd edition and only just picked it up again in 8th and now 9th. Hell, I don't even know how all the editions in between played. Makes me want a mini-series from you two going over the basics of each edition. pretty pwease?? It is my birthday coming up and everything!

    • @soupalex
      @soupalex 2 роки тому +1

      first of all, happy almost-birthday
      secondly… same? it's just anecdotal, but it seems like a lot of people i see discussing the hobby now are-like me-returning lapsed fans, and i wonder if there's some common connection there (personally, i stopped paying attention to gw some time part-way through 4th ed 40k, and rejoined around the time 9th came out… not that i was aware it was a new edition at the time; from my perspective it was just "maybe i'll dust off the old miniatures and see what's happening in 40k these days"). i suppose the global pandemic has sort of created a lot of new or returning hobbyists, since e.g. the painting/modelling component is something that can be done without really going outside… but idk why a lot of fans (at least those that have returned recently) seem to have left the hobby around the same time of 3rd/4th ed.

    • @soupalex
      @soupalex 2 роки тому +1

      thinking a bit harder about why i seem to see a lot of fans who ducked out around 3rd/4th… it occurs to me this might be partly audience selection, since this video-like a lot of codex compliant eps-focuses on material that was current around the 3rd/4th editions of 40k, and i suppose a lot of the people who watch this series might be nostalgic for a time when they were originally invested in the hobby. maybe there are other channels/communities where everybody is united in their fondness for 5th/6th ed? or maybe it just hasn't been long enough for that period to acquire the patina of nostalgia that 3rd/4th seems to have.

    • @xGamermonkeyx
      @xGamermonkeyx 2 роки тому +2

      @@soupalex heck, if anything I'm actually interested in seeing how 4/5/6/7th editions play and why I never hear much about them. All I ever hear about 7th is there were "problems" in a vague, ominous tone and people miming like they've just been punched in the gut.
      That said, I'd love to have a retrospective ep on Tau. They were my entry point to 40K just as GW planned and they've been one of my favourite factions ever since.

    • @soupalex
      @soupalex 2 роки тому

      @@xGamermonkeyx yeah, me too… i'd love to see how the game evolved in the time i was away.
      fwiw, my recollection of 4th ed was that it was barely very different to 3rd… at least, compared to how different 3rd was from 2nd! i think 4th formalised a lot of stuff that emerged from the various "chapter approved" columns that had been published in 3rd's lifetime, and i _think_ it also standardised some of the unit special rules (e.g. "ferocious assault"), if they weren't already.
      the main difference in 4th for me was the style of the codices; all the 3rd ed codices i remember seemed to have a _lot_ of fluffy upgrades and things you could buy for your characters/squads/vehicles, but in the codices released after 4th they seemed to strip this back a lot (i remember e.g. the "second third edition" csm book being rich with extra daemonic gifts you could use to customise characters and unit champions, and each of the chaos gods had their own sections with rules for cult-specific wargear, mark special rules, and vehicle upgrades. the 4th ed chaos codex didn't really have any of this and imo was a much poorer book for it. likewise the 3rd ed imperial guard dex had rules for creating a custom regiment (something that much more recent codices for other factions seem to have, now… e.g. create your own space marine successor chapter or necron dynasty by picking from different army-wide special rules), but these rules vanished in their following codex).
      i would love to see more tau stuff. never played them (unless you count "fire warrior" on the ps2 lol), but i always thought their "young empire" situation made them stand out a lot from the rest of the 40k races, and it was interesting that they mixed in "client races" among their armed forces (i guess kind of like ratlings and ogryns fighting in the imperial guard/astra militarum). hopefully they get a new book and some new models, soon… i gather they've been waiting for some attention from gw for quite a while now?

    For my higher computing back in 96/97 (old…) I used an ancient Apple Mac and Primex (iirc) to create a knowledge based system to recommend Eldar armies for 2nd edition. You answering a set of questions about how you want to play and points values and it would make recommendations. I intended to cover all 2nd edition codexes but the minuscule memory of the machine meant any file over a certain size just lost the data, so that killed that ambition. I was just ahead of my time 😂

    My roommate in college, who introduced me to 40k, had a copy of Army Builder (which meant I did as well) and we would make lists constantly. We would do a lot of weird stress test lists, like how many wounds could you fit into 1500 points, etc. The 3rd edition chaos codex was amazing for dumb gimmicky lists that might be overpowered in very specific circumstances, like infiltrating jump pack troops with save ignoring flame template weapons and other such nonsense. I had so many of those stupid lists saved.

    This was actually a pretty fun little program and I was using it during my warhammer playing 4th edition heyday. Good times :)

    Oh my, I remember the Enemies of the Imperium one and playing with it. Or at least the box art reminds me of something I've played with.
    I feel so old.

    You say terminayto, I say terminahto, let's shoot the whole thing off...? Interesting to see it was late enough to fall under the XML craze.

    I've made about a hundred times more army lists than I've played games in total. Especially for armies I don't even own a single model for. So, yeah. You're good.

    I remember this... it was their half assed attempt to compete with Lone Wolf Development's "Army Builder". I think Army Builder is technically still available but since all the data sets were fan generated and Army Builder itself went to a subscription format, 40K support completely died somewhere around 6th. Battlescribe might be good, but I hated it's interface compared to Army Builders.

    To respond to the question at minute 8.10: Yes, I don't play since second edition, I don't have an army but I have more than fifty army lists on battelescribe ready :)

    I have to express much thanks. I thought I'd never hear that Windows 98 Welcome thingiee again as I just simply assumed it was a very specific version of whatever software or not related to the OS itself, especially when had it turned off and never heard it since. Must have been like 23 years.

    I'm happy you have a copy of Codex Cityfight. I was afraid I'd have to send you my copy for you to do an episode.

    Basically everyone I knew at the time ignored it in favor of the lonewolf army builder program. It was more intuitive to use, produced way better printouts and updated more frequently. In my area, it was actually strange to see anything else being used. Our store had a copy on their computer and encouraged people to use it instead of pen and paper lists because everyone playing there was so familiar with the program.

    I actually own IAL! Each GW store was given a CD to try out and I was the only staff member with a PC beefy enough to run it!
