Virtual Hydlide (Saturn) Playthrough - NintendoComplete

- A playthrough of Atlus's 1995 action role-playing game for the Sega Saturn, Virtual Hydlide.
Played through on the default (easy) difficulty level. Since the primary difference between the difficulty levels lies in how useful the map is, it didn't seem necessary to prolong the length of the game by running all over the randomly generated map without any clue as to where to go. I think that the compromise makes for a far more entertaining video overall - hopefully you agree.
Virtual Hydlide, despite being published in the US by Atlus, was made by T&E Soft. Does that name ring any bells? They're most well known in America for their golf games, like Pebble Beach Golf Links on the Saturn and 3DO, Waialae on the SNES & N64, among others. Now, if you look at the way those games use digitized sprites, and you look at how this game uses them, there's a clear similarity, don't you think?
I personally love the look. I don't care that the game is notorious for its graphics - and rightfully so with a framerate that tends to hover somewhere between 5-15fps depending on what's going on. It's all super-chunky, it chugs worse than a pickled bar vet, and the main character looks like a complete tool (just check out his aptly named "Fairy armor"!), but somehow, all of these things coalesce into something that's extremely endearing. Have you ever had an animal in your neighborhood that is go grotesque that nobody has the heart to turn it away? A cat with one eye and a severe case of the mange that everyone feeds despite the public health risk or how much they complain about it?
Well, Virtual Hydlide is that cat. Nobody seems to want to admit that they love it, but I have a sneaking suspicion that a good many of the people that played this for any length of time found something redeeming in it.
I know that it was branded as a "perfect" remake of the original Hydlide game, and I suggest ignoring that claim. Any version of the original Hydlide game is far from this, and no game would benefit from being associated with the NES title. Sure, they share a basic structure, but Virtual Hydlide, in all of its tackiest 90s finery, is quite a different beast. It's engaging, and it's fun. It's mercifully easy and short (which it really had to be for how difficult the framerate can make it to do even simple things such as opening chests and picking up items). And it's SUPER hokey in the best way possible. The voices that the bosses speak in (mainly just phrases in Japanese slowed down and played backwards) are super creepy and oddly fitting, the enemy designs are sometimes great, sometimes hilarious, and sometimes will leave you just wondering WTF?
Oh, and the soundtrack is insanely good. Not in the way the FMV bits are - the ironic sort of way. The music is actually really, really good. Check out the lava cave music!
Whether you love it or hate it, there's no denying that Virtual Hydlide is a unique and memorable experience. I've always found it to be a good one, though.
Finally, If you've ever dreamt of a rail-cart sequence that tops the ones in SMRPG or FF6, well, hahahaha - this one does it!

This looks like the kind of video game you see in tv shows when a character is playing (in) a video game
+knuclear2010 Like Captain N's intro, or JD Roth popping out of a pipe in Mario 3? :D
like a public domain made for TV movie, or that really bad movie 'Arcade'.
🤣
Yeah, it's because everything is in extremely exaggerated digitized graphics and has like 10 frames per animation...
For some reason, especially in the '90s-2000's it seems like almost all non-video game media portrayed video-games like this even though there were actually very few games that went this route because it looks & plays like shit XD...
Gotta say it does have some kitschy charm to it, now, though.
Honestly, if someone had shown that to me as a kid in the mid 90s I would have loved this.
Elden Ring 1990
Elden ring looks amazing
Elden Ring on PC be like
I’d say “sounds”. Elden Ring could only dream of such music
Lol 🤣🤣
I used to own a Saturn and this game back in the day. I wish I still did.
I'm here because of AVGN. I enjoyed his video on this and Super Hydlide, but during the Virtual Hydlide review I couldn't help thinking "This actually looks kind of fun, or at least charming." It definitely had Dark Souls vibes before Dark Souls existed. I think I'd enjoy playing it if I could!
I don't know about anybody else but I love this game! I've played this so much back then and every time I did I always felt like I was always on a new adventure even if I had beaten it before because every new game you start is a different layout. Never got bored with this game much. I just loved exploring and enjoying the atmosphere all around! The music is also very good especially the Volcanic Cave music at 31:30! My only gripe is how clunky your character moves especially when turning around but it's a minor thing that can easily be ignored and getting used to. If anyone is checking this out for a review I would highly recommend giving it a try when you can and if it's re-released on any virtual console format (fingers crossed!) then I would get this immediately!
this game is a acquired taste, it was definitely incredible for the time it came out
dude it's just you alone love it believe me 😂😂😂😂
I thought it was great. I had a lot of fun with it.
Definitely blinded by nostalgia here, it has always been shit no matter how you look at it, way to ambitious for its time. Shame though.
I mean this is the closest you could get to a 90's Dark Souls.
I love the graphics and music. Very atmospheric game.
Good video- I always appreciate a playthrough video with no commentary just letting the game speak for itself!
This is, unironically, my favorite Saturn game.
Granted, I don't have a whole lot of Saturn games (and probably won't sadly, since they're getting so darn expensive now), but this game alone wowed me so much that I pull out the Saturn once in a while just to play it.
This was a pretty ambitious title for the Saturn. Almost like an MMO and in 1995 no less. Saturn was a pretty good console; miss playing Astal, Clockwork Knight, Bug, Golden Axe the Duel among others.
Couldn't agree more.
It took me the entire game to notice the hero has been running around in a "do you even lift, bro" stance.
ESmith Hopefully he stopped juicing before he ended up Chris Benoiting his family. Or the fairy pieces of that gamy-looking princess.
Virtual Hydlide might give you motion-sickness, but somehow it just wouldn't be anywhere near as endearing without its chunky 90s digitzed sprites, tacky FMV, and the hilariously awful costuming of the main character. It's like every wrong thing it does just makes it all the more appealing. Personally, I love it.
I may be in the minority but, despite its defective gameplay, I find Hydlide to be a memorable and worthy entry for Sega Saturn. Beginning with the cool FMV, the game has a unique atmosphere and look enabled by atmospheric music and beautiful backgrounds and settings. I think people forget that we're talking about 1995 here and yet I've seen people say that it was dated for 1995; I call BS...hard. The game may not be great to play but it has a memorable visual design.
at least this game is better than superman 64, bubsy 3d, congo the lost city of zinj and alundra
Just bought It on Ebay for 12 bucks. Considering It's is an exclusive, I can't wait for playing it, no matter how bad are the reviews. Thanks a lot for the gameplay. It looks pretty charismatic and a kind of a cult game.
@@Azadkanjo Np, it's a lot of fun. I hope you have a good time with it :) it's definitely worth at least one playthrough
@@marakarthegreat Alundra? I hope you mean Alundra 2, not the first one.
FYI, on every map you'll find green grassy areas on the overworld that have a secrect lift you can go down and you'll always find a chest with secret equipment in it. The thunder sword is my favourite, you can also find a fairy shield and lots of other stuff. There is always a particular type of tree and a few pink flowers around the lift. Happy hunting
This game is like watching a fantasy movie from the 80s, like Willow, Dark Crystal, Legend, Conan the Barbarian, Dragonslayer, Krull, Labyrinth, and many others.
Even the entire duration of 1:47 was similar to the length of those same movies.
Say what you will, but I think this is a very cool game. Not necessarily saying it’s a GOOD game, but it’s definitely a cool one.
And I really like the music in it
I think my favorite memory of this game (aside from the music being pretty boss) is going up to a tree - the wrong tree - and getting killed by bees in two seconds about a minute into the game. Good times.
Hahaha omg yes so many times that has happened to me
Looking at this longplay, its music is awesome and it seems fun.
This is one of the strangest games I've ever seen. It's perplexing and lovely
Isn't it though? I love it.
27:42 Oh dear, when your new armour looks like a 7 year old girls Princess dress.
What are you talking about, he looks like a total badass... 😂
I rented this game a good deal of times when I was young, I actually reached the last boss once, dealing 0 damage because 1- had no idea you needed special items and the faeries. 2 - never knew there was a bloody map button
Victor Castana Fenner Wow, I'm amazed you got anywhere without the map! That's impressive that you got to the end like that!
It's crazy how technology has improved so much in the last 30 years.
People bashing this game don't understand how early it was; try inventing 3D action RPGs on a hard-to-program-for platform when all you have for reference is Star Fox and Doom.
This wasn't even the first 3d action RPG
This game looks great.
At least the Music is not an Horrible Rendition of the Indiana Jones theme.
Wow this game definitely was interesting for it's time
This was the first game I played in my life brought back so many awesome memories just be 25 years since I saw it or heard this music.
That's awesome! Mine was Pong. Lol
1:37:16 - "I have to go now. My planet needs me!"
(Note: Jim the Knight died on the way back to his home planet.)
I miss the days of playing daft games like this. You can enjoy that you don’t really understand the plot or the collectibles and the movement is a bit clunky etc. I agree with everyone too, great music. Overall fantastic game.
Nicee, I like the music and the graphics are kind of charming Awesome video! :)
One of my favorite saturn games
I like how it puts you In a dream fantasy world
What a weird ass game. 10 fps and such low res blocky gfx have a strange appeal to them like being in a dream. With good music.
Totally unique game and concept that's always fun to replay and come back too. I remember the Mean Machine Sega review on this, they were pretty harsh on it back in the day...
This looks like something you'd expect from 3DO.
Yeah, I think this could run on 3DO at no less framerate, lol
this is uniroically great considering the date :). the magic lantern design (+other stuff) looks like an influence on souls games lighting
You deserve a thumbs up for sitting through this game all the way in !
I loved it!
8:25 it reminds me of the villa in castlevania 64, but even reinhardt back then was more fluid when exploring.
It looks like a 3DO game
this is a great game..my brother got me into it and downloded this cause it brings back great memory of this game
This game was way ahead of its time. Too bad AVGN sucks so much as a gamer and bashed this.
You suck so much as a gamer
Thats kind of.. his format.
That's how the character is, the problem is most of the audience doesn't realize this so for plenty of fans the videos seem like actual legit reviews.
This games music is literally the best part to me.
They didn't even have the actor's names in the credits. There were only two, they couldn't spare the text space?
I couldn't find out who the actors were on imdb
@@Mister_Oddity Right? Like I almost belive it is a text issue..."You Get Scroll". Is a great example of the text issues going on. Like They didnt have the extra space to have it say "You got a..." So the shortened it to "You get" For every instance to have it both make some modicum of sense and save space.
They probably didn't want to be listed lol
@@GamergodsFail you're probably right.
The music and graphics looks great imo
Good memories playing... and dying while playing this game as a kid :D
This game made me never want to ever go through a volcanic cave in real life.
1:00 Those fairies have some long, stick-looking arms...
Edit: Gotta admit, procedurally generated overworld and a setup like this... This game was pretty far ahead for the time. Aged like milk, sure, but it probably would be pretty cool to play. I might consider giving it a go if given the opportunity.
Looooved this game and the music!
Does anyone know who played Princess Ann in the game?
18:23 yes, thank you for this image. haven't laughed this good in weeks.
Omg that walk cycle 😂 for some reason this game reminds me of nick arcade games
This games used to scare the shit out of me as a kid 😂
The kobolds sound so adorable...
Even Jim looks tired in this game.
that hero's run is something to behold
Thanks for this video, I pass my childhood whitout knowing the final
xD
"enter if you want to die"
That sounds like a sign a 13 year old would put on his door to his room when he's trying way to hard to be edgy.
1.75x for a smooth experience
Gotta love that run cycle.
Who would've thought that Atlus would've went from this to Persona 5?
They used to make games for LJN like Friday the 13th and NFL
I am a fan for life. You... So good. Thanks.
Hollywood Holiday You are quite welcome, and thanks! :)
The intro video is the best part of this game
this thing had a world generating mechanic? was it just where everything was or would some dungeons be in a play through but not others?
ESmith The dungeons are always there, but their layouts and locations, and the layout of the world, are randomly generated at the beginning of each game.
Its a game that I just shouldn't have liked Finished it in a few hours and actually didn't hate it😅
I owned a copy of this game ,and, even looking almost unplayable,i had tons of fun with it
I really enjoyed this game.
Here because of Sega Lord X episode
16:09 - *YAHNAYNMANIC OUNMINYR HIR*
0:37-1:01
"I'm sorry did you get lost and confused?? Let me recap for you!!"
"There's dragon, and there's princess, and then the dragon phiswizirdaabbbla and the princess explodes into fairies.. .."
-Projared
Might wanna delete this comment now.
Delete? Yeah right.
So this is the newest Zelda game...not what I expected at all
Kitsch but interesting game. I really think I would have a good time playing it back then... if I had a Saturn !
I actually think this is a good game
Oh my God! it's really beautiful, a knight who will defeat the bad guy and save the princess is worthy of a fairy tale.💖🏰👸🗡😈🧚♀🦄🥀💖
I understand why Nintendo waited until 2017 to make Breath of the Wild
This game looks as an old elder scrolls videogame
How is your framerate much better than other videos I've seen?
I wouldve been 10 years old when this came out and i def wouldve thought it was amazing. Also im curious to anyone that actually saw or played this firsthand, is the frame rate as bad as it appears on the captured footage? I know sometimes, esp with old games it just doesn't sync up properly and makes footage look more choppy than it really is.
It was pretty chunky, yea.
I've skipped around a bit on videos of this game, but I can't tell - is there a story? Doesn't seem to be, really. Too bad, because I'd love to play it otherwise.
The story that only the hero go to get the 3 fairies, destroy Varglas, and Save Princess Ann
It's a remake of the original hydlide so yeah
Here after the AVGN episode.
Dido
If this was first person it would probably been ok
Like King's Field?
I beat this game in one sitting with a buddy getting stoned off our asses
Skyrim on salvia.
is it just me or do i just love cryptic games haha i know the nerd rips on this game but damn the shitty graphics the gameplay the music idk but i love it all hahaha
Ah, my first video game headache...literally.
That frame rate...oof!
The original Dark Souls! Here's a little bit of back story, now we'll drop you in the world with no gear and little direction. Good luck!
me 3 minutes in: THERE'S A MAP?!?!
You get Tool.
8:10: Now loading... Vampire's Mansion.
This was never a great game, but IMHO pretty revolutionary for it's time.
IVE WANTED TO PLAY DIS FOR YEARS,sadly could never emulate and dun have a saturn or a copy of it
It plays fine through Mednafen
@@NintendoComplete aye thanks fam soon as i get a PC im on it!
Follow up for the AVGN!
Les couloirs du temps
At least some of the music is pretty cool
Dark souls saturn edition
I actually prefer this over Dark Souls :)
@@NintendoComplete you what?
@@DanielAyy I've always really enjoyed this game.
@@NintendoComplete that's interesting.
@@NintendoComplete at least someone likes it
I'd play the shit out of a rerelease.
This game needs Craig Stadler. Then it would be perfect.
The very *title* of this game, could've been used to create a SUPREME online mmorpg multi-topic of games in this play realm style today. Sega was reaching the peak of bankruptcy, while over staffed by newly dope heads, that never understood the creativity👌 of game programing, back then.
5/5
I kinda like those outdated graphics, but it's impossible to forgive the terrible frame rate.
The fact that Altus was a part of this hurts me.....
They didn't develop it, they just published it, that's like saying Demon Souls was done by Atlus and not by FromSoftware.
Atlus is just the North American publisher for this. This was published by Sega in Japan and by Sega Europe in Europe, it seems to be a Sega produced game, so probably Sega of America just skipped it for some reason.
this kinda reminds me of dark souls
I was gonna try and play this game, but I think I'll just watch this video instead
T&E soft could have made Hydlide into a series like Ys if they didn't screw up the gameplay.
16:09 what does he say?
I think he said. "Yes. Yes, that's enigmatic. Are you he? You're a pimp!"
slowed down and reversed of a woman saying "please choose the number of players" in japanese.
Heh heh heh
