  • Bonfires have been part of the Protestant, Unionist, Loyalist Culture for over 100 years and signify the Landing of William of Orange at Carrick in June 1690 when beacon or bonfires were lit along the coast to welcome and guide Williamite ships to shore. Bonfires are lit on the 11th of July the eve of William's victory against King James at the Boyne in July 1690 that maintained the Protestant religion in Ireland and brought about the civil and religious liberty for all and established parliamentary democracy.
