  • In this video, I show you a very nice guitar that not only sounds great but is very affordable. This is an Epiphone Broadway which is a big-bodied guitar that delivers a really nice jazz tone. In fact, I was quite impressed by the tone quality that this thing produces especially when you compare it to similar-sized archtops like a Heritage Golden Eagle. These Broadways are several thousand dollars cheaper but it's hard to tell just by the looks. Despite being made in China, the craftsmanship is very solid. How do you like the sound? Great playing as always! I own a few of these, a Zephyr, a Regent and two Broadways. I put Seymour Duncans in one of the Broadways and it sounds great! The best part is its price you can get a pretty nice jazzy box for under a thousand dollars. For us on limited incomes its a heaven sent.

    I own one. Completely modified for Rockabilly. Bigsby B6G vibrato, Tru Arc aluminum compensated bridge on an ebony base, Seymour Duncan Staple P90's neck and bridge, Toneman Guitar 50's wiring harness with PIO vintage aged K42Y-2 caps, Thomastik-Infeld flatwounds 13-53, GraphTech Tusq XL nut, Grover locking tuners and finally a Plek job. I bought the Broadway a few years back for $799. Inexpensive enough for me to install all these mods. A Poorman's 1954 Gibson Super 400 CES. Money well spent. My guitar sounds amazing!!

    Hey Rich, thanks for the review. Your video helped me decide to get one. Mine was made in March of 2019 in Qingdao, China. It comes in warmer, vintage natural color. Yes, it’s got laminated spruce top married to laminated maple back and sides. The neck is hard maple and the fingerboard wood is Pau Ferro, which offers feel and tone between rosewood and ebony. But, the stock item is strung with 10s. I had the guitar inspected and customized. The modifications consisted of TUSQ nut slotted for 12 - 52 string gauge, D’Addario Chromes - Flat Wound, Gibson ‘57 Classic Humbuckers, and low action setup.
    By the way, your tailpiece is reversed, but as you say, it works well with your custom string gauge. I’ve gotta tell you. Despite its L-5 dimensions and tone wood combination, I find the guitar quite comfortable and not very heavy. It is easy to play and sounds really great through my BluesCube Artist. It does cause feedback if it’s too close to the amp, so it’s something to be aware of. I think the modifications were a good choice. Despite being made in China, there are no flaws in the finish, and I find the whole guitar a fine piece of workmanship. For me, this Customized Epiphone Broadway is a premium jazz box. I may install a Tune-o-matic bridge for archtop, or even change the tailpiece in the future. But for now, I’ll leave that vintage look intact.

      Im thinking of putting a Gibby 57 or Duncan 59 at the neck on mine. I like it more than some American and a Korean arch tops i had which had a superior components..very comfortable neck! Go figure..😊till I’m getting rich and buy a Benedetto, this will do the trick.

I'm not a jazz player but really wanted a nice jazz style for the occasional time I need to 'fake' some jazz for a TV commercial job. It's a lovely instrument - also great for chimey 'Beatlish' arpeggiated pop stuff in the middle position. Thanks for the review!

    • @RichSeversonGuitar

    • @RichSeversonGuitar
      @RichSeversonGuitar  2 роки тому +3

      Hey srfgrn! Thanks for the question!
      I put very tiny washers under the corners of the pickup rings so only the washers rest on the top and not the entire pickup ring. I think it makes the top more resonant which improves the sound a bit!

    Had a Joe Pass Epiphone years ago : pretty lame sound electrically and worse acoustically. The fact that the top is laminated, which you mentioned, and the back and sides are also laminated, which was not mentioned, make this a cheap guitar in terms of quality and price. So the woods and the luthiery make for a beginner's guitar made in China.
    It does look nice and your playing is good but it's harder to copy the sound and feel of a Gibson than it is to copy the basic look. You get what you pay for.
    Thanks for putting up these archtop videos.
    Can you do some videos with the pickups not in the body, which dampens the acoustic sound? A Gibson L7 or an L5 for example would be appreciated. You can also compare similar archtops - with a suspended pickup vs. with a pickup(s) in the body.

      I have owned numerous fine archtops over the years including a '29 L4, a '39 L7, a '53 and '55 L7, a '77 Byrdland, a '77 L5ces, two Guild Artist Awards and other carved tops. I also owned a '49, a '53 and a '55 ES175 and two Guild X-175s. Sadly had to part with them over the years to stay afloat. I now play an offshore made Epiphone Joe Pass and a Broadway and I am very happy with both of them and not just because they are affordable. They play well, look great and sound very good. Not fair to compare an all lamiated Epi Broadway to an all carved L5ces. Personally I am thankful to have the pleasure to play and own these instruments. Remember, Herb Ellis and Joe Pass played all laminated ES 175s and they sounded incredible. To each his own.

    Hmm, interesting comment. Why can't it be the guitar of a life time? It's not the guitar it's the guitarist. This is perfectly capable of outlasting any human. I'm sure it will be here long after all of us are gone, if you treat is as you would any guitar you care for. And it's a good guitar. Even if it is "just" an Epiphone. Never understood this elitist type of attitude. I have a 1986 Epiphone and I tell you, it's not lasting any worse than my much newer Gibson ES335. Can't say it plays worse either. By the way, your frequensator is reversed. They come the other way around from the factory. The shorter holder is on the bass strings. And your comment about the frequensator's effects is also off, unless I misunderstood you.

    • @RichSeversonGuitar
      @RichSeversonGuitar  3 місяці тому

      I wouldn't say that my attitude is "elitist" lol. I would simply say that people strive their whole lives to get a guitar like a Gibson L5 or a Super 400. They don't wait their whole lives to buy one of these Epiphones. They will all last a lifetime if you take care of them... but this Epiphone doesn't take a lifetime to acquire... like a vintage Gibson L5 would. Thanks for your comment but I think you took this way out of context.

    • @ltvddvtl
      @ltvddvtl 3 місяці тому

      @@RichSeversonGuitar Ok, in that case maybe you could have phrased it a little differently. It definitely didn't come across as you explained above. ;) Besides, there might be someone who's end goal is a Broadway, why not? Or even one of the original Broadways, which although I haven't looked, might not cost too much less than a L5. Regardless, I sold a Gibson Les Paul because the Epiphone version was honestly on pair as a player. No reason to keep the Gibson around if there were people willing to pay 3 times what the Epiphone was worth.

    When these came out, they were MIJ (Made In Japan), just heard Rich say these are made in China. If you can find an MIJ, jump on it, MIC,.........PASS. BTW, all Epiphones are now made in Shandong China. Always go for MIJ over any other Asian made guitar. There's Japanese made, and then there's all the rest.
