The contempt felt by the Japanese for the Marines fighting ability soon turned to a grudging respect, then gradually became fear and dread of the American fighting machine
The Japanese first felt that their forcces were harder than American forces. When they lost, they usually blamed the numeric superiority of the enemy and throughout the war they seemed to feel that their fighting spirit could compensate for their numeric inferiority and lack of trained reserves. Look at Kamikazes, the Baka rocket bombs, the midget submarines, and other one way tools. Hell, look at how the Yamato got wasted on a forlorn hope. One way trip with nowhere near enough fuel to actually do anything when she got there and damned near no air support.
Admiral "Bull" Halsey’s dermatitis, i remember reading was a brutal case of shingles, keeping him out of the theatre for a couple of months.
So painful..
