Good video. I've done this to a couple radios. Ive also replaced the LCD polarizer film to invert the screen to a dark background with light letters. One of my hangups with the FT891 is the screen. I would be mounting in my mobile so the screen color would have to change. Thank you for showing the disassembly process and Now I'm more comfortable getting the 891
@fnordist im not sure that is possible but look for how to change the lcd polarity. It's a little more involved than just putting a gel over the screen but I'm sure there's a way.
Nice fix! Curious though - couldn't you achieve the same thing by placing the colored sheet on the outside, so that you could overlay it at night, but have it regular for the day? 73, K8JLW
@@reidlanham2011 if you can get it static enough to stick it would work. Peeling it off and on might damage the thin film though. It's readable in the daylight.
One thing I did differently was wear nitrile gloves during the install to avoid finger prints on everything. I also cleaned the screen and gel with ROR camera lens cleaner to eliminate dust and any oils. Not sure it makes a big difference, but finger prints on screens will drive me nuts.
Very nice! There's a trend with Icom ID-5100s to use some sort of polarizer to invert the white to a dark purplish color. Everything is inverted, which I don't think I like. I wonder if this would work instead. Right now, I have TWO bright displays looking at me in the dark. Switching both to red may be kind of nice. Thanks for sharing!
Disassembling the radio voids it as far as I know - not that they would know. I haven't taken mine out in the sun yet because we're still in the 5 hours of daylight part of the year. But man is it nice in a dark room/car at night!
@GraymanPOTA still readable in the day time but I haven't tried it in direct sunlight. Normally during the day my rig is semi under my tonneau cover with the tailgate open so it's in the shade
Cool how-to Mod Dan! If radio isn’t under warranty anymore, who cares? If it is, I guess you can revert back to original before sending to Yaesu. But these radios never fail , right😊. I was wondering about use in daylight also, but seems okay, based on the discussion.
Looks good. Ordered a sheet of Roscoe.
Love it!

I would like to have the background in cyan and the text in white. Is that possible with the 891?

That looks amazing nice job 🙂👍
Ordered a sheet, did the mod, now I have enough to do ALL the ft-891's owned by my club members :P
Reminds me of some of the older yeasu rigs. I wouldnt mind to do orange or something similar

More better for sure 😊

@w1rcp for sure the besterest
@@WD4DAN many much more betterer? I’m highly amused that my idea gained that much traction 😂

Interesting mod 👍

Is the ID-5100 a touch screen? I'm wondering if the gel is too thick...
@@Aramalas - It is! Someone who's done the polarizer mod thinks that the filter will still work. I'll try it someday since I have two ID-5100s.
It’s cool only if there are no finger prints on the screen. I did like how it looked.
I am not sure what you did that would void the warranty. How does the red display look in the sunlight?

@ 10-4. I have mounted mine in the Bronco since I am doing Front Seat Parks in the Dark during the winter. ❄️

Time has already voided my warranty.
@@KeepEvery1Guessing same!
reminds me of my 857d i may have to void my warranty soon
If ya aint voiding warranties you aint havin' fun!
Why not just stick the red translucent layer on the outside of the screen then you can remove it by day and add it at night, no warranty issue……
Mine's not "staticy" enough to stick........
Still quite visible in daylight
oh no, I can`t stand it.
Horrible.
