Thanks for this. Right cogs were chattering at end of rear lid raise and lower operation. Sure enough, the pivot screw was slightly loose. Took less than 1 hour to fix thanks to your pull down guide. Smooth now. Added some blue loctite to the screw and greased the cogs, motor spline etc.. with PTFE grease. Well done mate.
@@johnwatson2261 I love to hear that it worked for you! Truly it is a simple job. I was surprised there were no guides about this on YT. Really glad I made this video, cheers bud
This is very helpful. I might need to change a motor out in my PRHT. It makes a popping noise when first retracting. I've also found shavings on the motor's gear. Would you have any tips for me?
@@sekimorth if that gear you are referring to shaving is that big black tooth gear then you definitely are misaligned. Mine was also making popping/clicking sounds but mine did it at the end of the top operation. To see if this fix would help you open up that deck lid and check for that bolt that should be flush on both sides. As far as I know that’s the easiest way to check if this will help. Good luck!
@@treeskier802 it does cost about 2 grand to replace to hard top if everything fails. Most Mazda techs are not knowledgeable on how to work on the top at all so that’s why I ended up learning to work on it myself. It is worth having though, style points and practicality. This issue happened after 6 years of daily driving after I bought it at 54k miles and it went through winters. I now have 103k miles. I’d say this is pretty rare to have issues but it is costly and NOBODY knows how to work on it…Many guys in the subreddit have well over 100k miles with no top trouble. Soft top would be the cheaper/safer/less cool route long term.
Thank you very much. I live in Vermont so the hard top would be the better option if it’s reliable. I live in a condo and wouldn’t worry about parking in my lot and getting some snow on it. I’d likely use it as a coupe quite a bit due to our many overcast days. I think I’m going to grit the teeth and hope I get a had top that will work well. How often do you grease and oil the mechanisms?
@@diseasesjesus5078 Thanks. I never found the right car. Will look again next spring. Was hoping to find a good one this fall. It’s fine. Will have another 6 months to save some money so maybe I can pay cash.
@@alexChabakphotography I haven’t seen anyone attempt one yet! I’d have my doubts. Too many moving parts to just slap it on, probably would need fabrication. Would be a major headache imo, these things are finicky enough as is 😂
@@mikebarrett8681 I would think its an issue with the roof clamp maybe it doesn't think you have the clamp shut completely? Might not be related to the actual prht motors or gears if you don't hear any sounds, and it doesn't beep at you. There are some vids around on how to take apart the plastic coverings on the roof clamp. I'd start there! If you can post a vid of the problem I'll see what I can help with

Does the roof on the PRHT have a lot of issues? I’ve thought about getting one but I’m anxious it’s more costly and problematic than a soft top.

Super!
is it feasible to install a prht in place of a soft top to get a prht miata for less or the same as a used one?
