In my opinion, while the gameplay is more like the older games. The story is the best out of all the SMT games. Especially with how the characters have to react to the situations and the law and choas hero are my favorite. Spoiler: Also, I love that the New Neutral ending makes the MC basically become the Doom Guy
The first RPG to force me to git gud. Did three playthroughs of the original DS version in total. One i barely scrapped by Mithras in Bootes then gave up on Carina, i remember the macabre fight the most, i felt like i softlocked myself inside the palace. Second i got to Eridanus and hit the difficulty wall that is Ouroboros, i was so tired of doing attempts and failimg that i cheated it to death, gave up on Grus because i was too scared of facing Maya. My last save is sitting there, untouched, in front of Mem aleph's door, one day i'll beat it and avenge my younger self, one day.
Did the same but gave up on eridanus 3 years ago I got back into the game last month and after like 70 hours or so i finally got the new chaos ending I can say mem aleph is almost easy next to the true final boss on redux :/
I finished the new neutral ending on a friend's copy last summer. This game made me an SMT fan, even if I slightly prefer playing some of the other entries. Such a unique experience. I will forever be afraid of the new final boss...
The Redux have good extra content and new endings but the waifu and lolly just dont fit with the game, while the original is more hard and better art style. Strange journey is my favorite main line but i cant choose which version is better lol Amazing video man
I didnt mind Alex. Makes sense that shes hostils and boring. Shes on a mission and very hardened from her future. The loli was weird but made her easy to trust. So the twist at the end was effective.
The new models are fantastic. People complain that they look generic. In my opinion that’s what they were going for. It’s the idea that none of the people in the cast is anyone special. You’re all just a team of people slapped together to go on a suicide mission. Everyone is on edge and focused on surviving, there’s no sense in getting to know the people part of your crew since you’re all one mistake away from death. The execution was perfect in my opinion.
Great video! Really like the editing in this. Personally I think the game is great. -great atmosphere -great setting -great story -fitting music Definitely one of the most interesting SMT settings imo. You're constantly reminded how small and unimportant you are. Only real problem I have is that some dungeons really drag on. (Fornax.) The demon-cores for fusions were cool, as well. And alignment co-op was amazing. I wouldn't mind seeing it return. Only problem is, it's more fun to not know your alignment. You always know what you are in SJ.
Honestly the best addition which puts redux ahead in my book are the demon and character sprites on the bottom screen during combat. It sounds like a small thing but it adds alot to see your party in that way, apparently it was planned for smt iv but unfortunately scrapped

Great review also I played first strange journey on the DS and is my personal favorite main line game so far. about the difficulty well there some really frustrating parts in strange journey but my overall experience was that I enjoyed it a lot. My ending was the neutral route (that I somehow got in every megaten game I played so far)
I haven't played the spin offs of the series but considering the ones I played, definitely this one have the best story. I had no problems with ouroboros actually but The last two bosses from Redux were incredibly difficult to me. Considering I completed the womb map I thought I was incredibly overleveled, but then the final boss from the original game appeared and wiped my whole party in one or two turns. It took me a lot of grinding to beat it and then the womb final final boss was another spike that I wasn't expecting after defeating the othe boss. I was so frustrated that I ended up lowering the difficulty and even in easy it tookme so long to beat that boss (And that bullshit it does when it's like at 30% health...) I really loved this game and recommend it a lot but beating the new content the first time will get a lot of willpower. I played nocturne, smt iv, smt v and a bunch of persona games and I feel like the final bosses from this game ar the hardest ones by far. I've neve before have to change the difficulty
UA-cam's been recommending me some of these videos, and given Strange Journey was what got me into the series, I figured this was a perfect watch. Actually, currently in the midst of a 2nd viewing. I remember the surprise I felt playing the game all that time ago when Jimenez and Zelanin become half-demon and half-angel (I see them as halves only because being human originally and being given power by different means). I fucking loved the story, still love the story, and the bits that Redux adds in I also enjoyed (despite not seeing their endings myself yet). I just wish its password system would return in other games, at least in some form. Edit: As for the other differences... I personally don't care. I still enjoy the game regardless of its changes. It's a solid several hours exploring pocket dimensions as essentially a space marine, kicking ass with demons, angels, and other creatures by your side.
Thanks for the review. I remember picking up this game because it said SMT and ended up enjoying it to do multiple playthroughs. I hated the maze like sector because I always got confused but once I got the doors unlocked it got better. I played the DS version though.
I played it on ds.I want to play redux because the original is one of my favourite jrpgs but i always start something else(playing last bible III and Nocturne atm) and i dont find the time to replay a game when i finish it.But i want to see law and chaos ending some time in the future.
I'm playing redux, I have spent over 24 hours and I gotta say I love it, although it feels very easy, as of right now, only a few random encounters killed my party and the only boss that killed me was Ishtar, it's the same with P5R, still I'm having a good time
I have played the original DS game on neutral and my only 2 gripes are: Lack of skills for the MC. He's pretty useless compared to other demons for most of the game and unlike Nocturne you can't use Mana Refill + Mediarahan for healing, so you have to rely more on items, which leads to grinding. Apps aren't that useful for healing HP and MP compared to spells, and the good healing ones cost 5 points out of 10 available. The other is certain BS bosses like Ouroboros Maia (healing) , Zelenin (instakill spells if you use aj attack she isn't weak to, which you aren't told about. Also way over leveled for the time you meet her) , Jack (completely heals self, only feasibly beat without grind if you use Phys repel, which is rare at that point. Thry fixed him in redux afaik) and Mem Aleph (instakill that's unavoidable, BS)
I admit I've rage quit against Mem Aleph so many times for her damn skill that return all of your demons of a random alignment. The whole game up to that point encourages you to use demons of your own alignment for the demon co-op, and Mem aleph straight up has a skill with a 1/3 chance of punishing you for sticking to your alignment
Atlus should remaster this game for PC/Modern Consoles. I personally think this one is amazing, one of the best, just like Soul Hackers ( Soul Hackers 2 is also pretty good ) Interesting to see that the Switch limited SMTV more than the 3DS limited this. Probably SMTV needs a PC port.

If you want better art and more difficulty without the additional characters and extra plot/endings: Stick with the original. Everything else: The redux. I genuinely prefer the redux over the original though the art/UI on the original DS is MUCH, MUCH better. Even the SOUNDS/DESIGN of the UI felt more immersive and gave off a sense of serious urgency with the darker blue/black gradients, the loud and simple yet harsh beeps of selecting things, and the solely utilitarian look of everything with no fancy bells and whistles with unnecessary animations. It gave a much more serious feel to the game that I felt was lost in translation to the 3DS Redux.
Biggest difference was not mentioned: In Redux if MC dies, it is not an instant game over. This alone is what made Strange Journey Redux so much easier. But I feel this change really weakens the narrative.
