    That's an amazing idea! I am a gamer too, so I keep my guitar just beside my computer, unfortunately can't keep my mouse and keyboard away lol.
    Another important tip, keep the phone away, if not possible then disable social media notifications. One notification ruins everything.

      Haha I dunno I think that mouse could be hidden somewhere easily if need be

      maybe you should try this: since you play on PC, put guitar on the chair, which you use, when are on a computer, this way, guitar gets on your way and reminds you, that hey! if you want to sit here, you have to pick me up and practice a little

      Oh it definitely can! And really any other habit we're trying to form... exercise, healthy eating, etc.

    Easy:
    first, I bought a stand for the guitar, and it stands directly next to my escritorio where I not only see the beauty all day but it is in direct reach,
    secondly I have a payed lesson once a week, therefore even if its just for a few minutes, l want to show some progress until the next lesson and thirdly I bought your beautifully arranged Star-Wars-medley notes and aim at playing this until summer

    Listening to you, I'd be almost convinced you're a mortal like the rest of us! Definitely a great tip for whatever thing you're trying to get done, not just guitar.
    I also struggled with this willpower issue, years ago. With time, working on it became unnecessary -my guitar gradually turned into a comforting/reassuring object, something I'd go for when I felt down; and since this was a time with many such lows, playing became a fallback activity -a habit. It was more and more soothing. Now that I am more technically able, I often just improvise random stuff and enjoy that freedom (when I'm not studying your arrangements).

      I love that! It becomes more rewarding as you see progress, which makes you want to practice more, so it becomes this virtuous cycle.

    I have mine mounted on the wall (can't put in on the floor or the toddler will mess with it). Putting it within arm's reach made a big difference for me!

    I bought a stand two years ago when buying a guitar for my step grandson. It really did help my play more and become a better player. This really does work.
    Thanks

    FWIW, when I returned to guitar a few year back, that '20 second thing' is exactly what I noticed. And I 'solved it' exactly the same way - with a guitar stand and my guitar sitting right next to my practice station.

      It's simple, but you'd be surprised how many people underestimate how effective it is

    Love the idea of controller in the case below the neck. Unfortunately I play games on PC and sit at my desk almost all day. I do indeed have my guitar next to me on a stand all day while I work (but I have to teach throughout the day so I need it next to me), so one thing I do when I get off work and play games is play exercises during load screens and between matches of COD or FN or whatever I'm playing. Video games give you more than enough time to get a few scales in between all the loading! I do the same thing if I'm reading something or editing audio or video files where I don't need to have my hands on the mouse and keyboard -- 5 minutes of time for exercises or that tricky passage in Ponce or whatever. Another tip: even if the rest of the house is still sleeping, practice early in the morning (with coffee of course) and use a sock under the strings by the bridge as a mute so you can get in some time before work -- but do it before you pick up your phone or look at social media. Helps for busy schedules like mine. Thanks, Nathan, for the great video! Peace.

    This really works. I bought a guitar 3 years ago and I only actively played it a couple months. Now it's literally an arm's reach away, so with daily practice 3-4 weeks ago I was still playing the most basic rendition of Ode to Joy, now I'm playing Bourrée by Bach (not the most elaborate version either, but all the notes are there).

    • @BeyondTheGuitarAcademy

      @@BeyondTheGuitarAcademy Thanks. It was really surprising for me too, especially because I still am barely good enough to always find the right string with my picking hand, but I found that if I just "let it happen" it goes better. The more effort I want to put into it, the more I mess up.

    this 20 second rule is so true. I actually already noticed this about myself, that I practiced guitar more when I laid it out on my guitar stand instead of putting it into my case. I'm going to try to figure out what my distractions are now and figure out how best to avoid them and also how to integrate this rule into other aspects of my life.

    • @BeyondTheGuitarAcademy
      @BeyondTheGuitarAcademy  4 роки тому

      Awesome! Yeah the distraction part isn't always as obvious, but it's equally important. I'd love to hear what you come up with

    My guitar is right near my desk where I spend a lot of time. Whenever I get bored, even while watching a video on youtube, I'd pick up my guitar and play, sometimes improvising. This video is totally right, accessibility completely makes the difference, and if my guitar was in my case, I'd never want to get it out and play.

    Yesss! That's what I tried to implement a few days back. I brought the guitar into my bedroom where I spend most of my time now(due to lockdown). Now I pick up the guitar more than often but I end up playing just a few easy pieces and then pick up my phone to check on other stuffs. I do like put it on DND but can't really resist touching my phone in the middle of my practice. Any tips to stay motivated for a bit longer?😃😃

      @BeyondTheGuitarAcademy  4 роки тому +2

      Listen to Episode 3 of our Podcast (link in description) about Productivity. Do Not Disturb doesn't make it inconvenient to pick up the phone. You need to make it inconvenient. By putting your phone on the opposite side of the house while you're practicing, for example.

    I think developing a time to practice and setting an alarm to remind you is a good way to approach this issue. Nathan, I see that your guitar is rather expensive, I suspect. Leaving it on a a stand subjects it to various dangers of damage, from humidity and temperature changes, to dogs and young children ( or others) from knocking it over and putting, at the very least, a serious “ding” in it. I think a guitar you value should always be kept in a case when not being played. Find a different way to incorporate the 20 second rule into your life. I practice daily, at least 1 to 2 hours, at the same time every day. At other times, I’ll just get it out and do a set of warm ups. That’s my thoughts on the 20 second rule. E

    What I did was that I was always afraid my kids would reck the hell out of my guitar so I used to keep it away making me practice less and less,
    So I just bought a very very cheap yet playable 30$ guitar and always put it on the couch , so it is reachable.
    Kids kick it all the time and I don't even care 😂
    Guitar is always near me and I pick it up now and then and practice.
    Very helpful solution for me.
    Buy a practice guitar.
