  • The Houston Zoo cheetahs enjoy stretching their legs out while running at the Sam Houston Race Park. Running is a natural behavior for cheetahs in the wild, so the staff at the Houston Zoo want to promote this behavior by encouraging them to run - this is called "enrichment."
For more on animal enrichment and the Houston Zoo, visit www.houstonzoo.org.

Max M Do you realize that the reason why all the big cats are endangered is because this "wild" you refer to is rapidly disappearing? It is to the point that with many species there are now more in captivity than in the wild and soon there will be none in the wild. If zoos and sanctuaries don't take in big cats they will become extinct.

The most docile and good-natured of the big cats, the cheetah is actually rather gentle and calm, typically not aggressive toward humans, and can even be tamed. They are curious, and have been known to climb on and laze atop the hoods and roofs of photographers' vehicles out in the wild. Amazing and sweet animals!!

The cheetah is truly built for speed with every part of its body adapted in some way to help it run faster. Large, hard paw pads and semi-retractable claws provide great traction. A small skull reduces wind resistance. Large nostrils and lungs provide quick air intake. A large liver, heart, and adrenals also facilitate a rapid physical response. A long, fluid, greyhound-like body is streamlined over light bones. Small collarbones and vertical shoulder blades help lengthen the stride. The tail acts as a rudder for quick turning. The eye's retinal fovea is of an elongated shape, giving the cheetah a sharp, wide-angle view of its surroundings. (The human fovea is round.) The dark tear marks beneath each eye may minimizing the sun's glare. The spine works as a spring to give the cheetah added reach for each step.

Liked to have seen Bolt out there against them. That would have been a race; might have beaten the slower one. And I hope they do this often, probably not due to number of factors. Could result in injuries to the Cheetah if not done gradually; not being used to limb stress like running. Doubt their enclosure allows running.

I think after the lepard they are the prettiest big cats also ... hmmm tiger cubs are pretty cute also.Very nice that they care enough to take them out and let them run, hopefully they will do that often. Their habitat is disappearing and their gene pool is getting smaller. Zoos are critical in raising awareness for the plight of the species, conducting research to encourage successful breeding and to track genetics, as well as to help sanctuaries in Africa communicate with the indigenous populations to prevent them from being killed on sight. Zoos provide funding, information, and support to help this animal hopefully continue to survive in the wild.

I appreciate the zookeepers' efforts. I really do. But zoo life is WEIRD.
It also blows my mind that some people thought we needed a study to prove that cheetahs are healthiest doing what they evolved for millions of years to do.
In general, I notice research universities and other institutions often conducting studies to "make possible" something that we were doing already.
