It’s so funny to me that the intro to this game completely glosses over the fact that Scott Calvin unalived Santa Claus. The coat didn’t just “find” him lmao
I like to imagine that in the first rendition of this game before they released it, there was a cutscene of previous Santa just getting WRECKED, and then some corporate guy had to be like "no we can't include this, do you know how much we'll have to raise the rating for that?"
I just like how it said "Something wonderful happened!" And looking back at the movie, that "wonderful" thing the fact that Scott killed Santa...it's a miracle.
18:40 I'm not gonna lie, the animation in this game is unreasonably good, considering. The walk cycle has a lot of expression, and it's super fluid, especially for a GBA game. They also made the Santa model actually look like Tim Allen as Santa (check out when he does the coat-parachute thing and look at his face). It's surprisingly solid.
There's even sub-pixel animation, which is where individual pixels shift colour so that is seems like there's movement less than 1 pixel big. You can especially see it on Santa's hat during his idle animation, where the bottom of it shifts between white and black. WAY more effort than they could've gotten away with.
Read that years ago and I still remember each story thread throughout it. Really a captivating book that I remember really made me reexamine sympathy vs empathy vs antipathy for characters. A lot of hopelessness in that book that makes you consider your stances on things.
House of Leaves is such a good book. I read it like 15 years ago and it's still fresh in my mind like it was yesterday. And the author's sister wrote a companion album to the book that is also killer and totally worth a listen Edit: guess I should watch the whole video before commenting 🤣
Pretty sure in the movie he was literally woken up by someome on his roof. He went to go see said "Hey," Santa was surprised and fell. Like something very close to that.
It makes me so happy to hear Dan talk about House of Leaves, Poe, and Haunted. They are all so amazing, and I'm really happy Dan enjoys them too! Easily my favorite book and album of all time.
Just to let you guys know it's about the in-laws coming in to the north pole, first movie was him having a better relationship with his son, the second one was his niece finding out he was Santa along with finding a ms. claus clause that made him gradually lose his santa power the more unmarried he stayed
Aw heck yeah, House of Leaves is such an adventure. If you go into it blind, it's a very disorienting, but it's such a slippery and ethereal and haunting thing to read through. It's like we're looking directly into the part of his brain that doesn't care at all about what Dan is saying and is only invested in the game and I find that hilarious.
I read house of leaves my senior year of high school when a friend brought it for me to borrow. I had honestly forgotten about it until Dan mentioned and unlocked a forgotten part of my mind.

Dan, thanks for bringing up House of Leaves. I'm not a reader but your description of it sounded so interesting that I immediately bought it and it is truly an amazing book!
As soon as he said, “It’s an unreliable narrator horror book not for when you’re in a bad place,” I immediately thought House of Leaves. It’s a great book. But it does get to ya.
House of Leaves is the weirdest book ever - but definitely agree with Dan. It's a very claustrophobic book and is just incredibly unsettling. its got unreliable narrator, a book within a book, "mixed media" book. its absolutely worth checking out
@@dragonscales2758 it’s a narrator who tells you a story in first person but you can’t trust what they’re saying. A great example is the Girl on the Train. Cannot WAIT for the House of Leaves Grump Bump, and can't believe Dan is here in a goddamn Santa Clause 3 game talking about the book that changed my life. House of Leaves is an absolute behemoth of a novel, but it's so worth it. Took me three months to read it the first time in high school a decade ago, and now I own Danielewski's entire published works, met the man twice, constantly wear text-fused apparel from the author's clothing line, and recommend him to everyone I know, on the same level as Sleep No More here in NYC. And then he goes even further and brings up Poe and Haunted, my absolute favorite album of all time. (Their collaborative process between novel and music is really astounding, if anyone wants any stories about it hit me up!) What a wonderful treat. I love these guys.
I like how Arin can go from one extreme to another just like that. He's like one of those days where it's clear and sunny in the morning but then dark and rainy in the afternoon. He went from "This game rules. Watch me speedrun it." to "This game is too hard!" in the first half of the video.
Randomly click on an episode and hear we are discussing a) a formative book from my high school years and b) one of my favorite albums from the 90s. Today is a good day. Ps definitely started singing 5 & 1/2 minute hallway as soon as Dan said “do you know Poe?” Man what a time to be alive.
...this video is taking me back to high school, over ten years ago; between the references to Charlie the Unicorn, and those to House of Leaves (my then-bestie-now-partner and I binged Alan Wake, back then, and Poe's "Haunted" featured in that game...and any time I hear House of Leaves, that song IMMEDIATELY springs to mind, as well as the tidbit about Poe collabing with her brother to reference his book in her song ["Here in November, in this House of Leaves, we'll pray"])... ...thanks for that, guys; especially Dan, because Poe's "Haunted" plays rent-free in one of the corners of my mind, from time to time, and has a bittersweet sense of nostalgia mixed with remorse to it...far more impactful than the weird Tim Allen Christmas films, at least.
House of Leaves literally gave me a migraine. I love it and highly recommend it. The way the design of the words on each page adds to the atmosphere and story is just * chef's kiss *
On the subject of siblings doing things together, the best advice I can offer is media. Find something you can both get into, whether that's a genre of music, movies, or books, and then find things to say about it. My sister and I both watched Red vs. Blue, and now I'm very involved in helping her write a fanfiction and flesh out the AU to go with it. So it doesn't surprise me at all that a musically talented sister wrote a soundtrack for her brother's book.

Oooo “Hey Pretty” is my favorite Poe song ✨ thanks for teaching me something new & random, Dan
Randomly click on an episode and hear we are discussing a) a formative book from my high school years and b) one of my favorite albums from the 90s. Today is a good day.
Ps definitely started singing 5 & 1/2 minute hallway as soon as Dan said “do you know Poe?”
Man what a time to be alive.
Arin: When you work from? Your home is work. And that’s Santa dude. Really makes you think.
Wise words from Arin Hanson
Nice to see where Death Stranding stole its ideas.
...this video is taking me back to high school, over ten years ago; between the references to Charlie the Unicorn, and those to House of Leaves (my then-bestie-now-partner and I binged Alan Wake, back then, and Poe's "Haunted" featured in that game...and any time I hear House of Leaves, that song IMMEDIATELY springs to mind, as well as the tidbit about Poe collabing with her brother to reference his book in her song ["Here in November, in this House of Leaves, we'll pray"])...
...thanks for that, guys; especially Dan, because Poe's "Haunted" plays rent-free in one of the corners of my mind, from time to time, and has a bittersweet sense of nostalgia mixed with remorse to it...far more impactful than the weird Tim Allen Christmas films, at least.
This feels like a classic episode of Game Grumps and I'm living for it
House of Leaves literally gave me a migraine.
