Very cool to see more of this on YT, so far the only decent, indepth and historically accurate Pugilism I've seen is from Martin Oz, whereas lots of other people are unskilled, sluggish, weak, awkward, slow or focus too much on the exggerated "photography geared" versions of the postures and stances, without understanding anything deeper or geuinly practical about the art. Many who have taken up this art (and give it a bad name, same as with some LARPesque groups who have sadly become the modern day heirs of Bartitsu, not that I have against anything against LARPers and such, fun stuff), don't have a genuine grasp of actual "fighting", which is essential to understanding something like Pugilism and its writings.
What I like about this is that it's more geared toward no-rules street defence and bare knuckle, and not "just" sport.
Thankyou for your comment I'm glad you are liking the series, plenty more to come.
And deffo, I am aiming this back to its origins as best as possible, especially when I do technique videos, to show its roots as a form of fighting street defence (and a very brutal one at that) I feel that most people do bot appreciate western "martial arts" and even most dont realise we have our own forms. On the whole, Europe was a very violent place until only just recently and so our fighting forms reflected that brutality in their efficency to hurt and maim their opponents. What we see as sports now being the heirs of these fighting forms, are heavily diluted, and necessarily so also, as no one wants to lose their eyes or have their bones broken.
Thankyou for your comments :)
@@HouseOfDevlin I agree. It's true tradtional or historical Western arts have been laregely forgotten. HEMA has done a great job at reviving a lot of the weapons and grappling arts.
I'd say the striking arts such as these are the ones the least well known at this time, so it's cool seeing people who do it.
A lot of the time people don't class them as "martial arts" because of sterotypes from media, fiction and so on, that westerners are are brutes with no technique, or because the arts have no spiritual elements. But the further you go back, not only are they wrong about western arts being clumsy and brutish, but the Asian arts only had "spiritual" beliefs added far later in the game than people think, and the "real" historical martial arts of asia for pure fighting have been long lost. Which I actually wrote a bit on.

@@omardiangeloarteaga4875 Oops, yes, the article was deleted some time back. Sorry about that.
Great stuff. Well researched and looking forward to the next instalment. I was recently reading an article on the bbc website about Jane Couch, who had to win a court case to be licensed to Box as a British woman in the 1990s, just over 20 years ago. But there were women Boxing in the 1700s such as Elizabeth Wilkinson.
Great stuff mate I'm very glad you liked it. Was a real pleasure to film :) and I will be adding as much as I can on the subject. that's a real shame about Jane couch having to go to court to be allowed to box. I vaguely remember it actually -but was quite young at the time, so will read up on it again to remind myself. And you are very correct. I've actually seen a few illustrations of female pugilists. There were certainly no issue with women taking part. It's amazing in many ways how society on certain things can actually go backwards.
If I can get enough info to do a video on her I will actually try and cover Elizabeth Wilkonson at one point :)
That would be great. There is some info on Wikipedia about her.
I was also going to say we seem to go backwards as a society sometimes. “They” made such a big deal about having a black superhero in “Black Panther” but seemed to forget we already had Blade and Spawn. No one made a big deal about Wesley Snipes being black, he was just a bad ass hero. There was also a cartoon I used to watch as a kid, Bravestarr - a Native American “law man” but no one made a big deal about his race. Race doesn’t matter to me. All these protests are very tiresome and seem like a big step backwards. But I see they’re trying to divide us for political reasons but so many seem to be eating it up.
Tell me about it I loved those films especially Blade-and you are so correct-never once was it made into a big thing that wesley snipes was black, hell never once with any actors such as will Smith,Denzel Washington etc.. in fact like you say it's like they want division. Deffo one step forwards 50 steps back regards all that's happening at the moment. I did a video on the difference between equity and equality on bittube, if you ever go on there check it out, I think youd enjoy the discussion. Its deffo a crazy world atm though, I just hope we can all return to a place of normality at the end of it all with our freedoms and way of life intact
Excellent, Excellent information thank you.
Thankyou and no problem, I have an ongoing series on the subject, its in my playlists called pugilsm if that is any interest to you. Thanks for watchjng

I'll be adding a lot more videos like this style in there also over time.

@@HouseOfDevlin ...... Writing a book it tough. Stick with it though. Thanks for the stuff that you sent about your other channel. Later I will check it out. I've taken an interest in boxing and it occupies my mind and I'm learning lots. All the best ......
Cheers my man, it's deffo a long journey, 3 years into it now but the end is (relatively) in sight :)
Some of these dudes were in some shape for the 1700s flip me 😂. What do you make of bkb? bare knuckle boxing now in the UK that's been about for a couple years.
I like it :) there is a gym near me that's produced a few champions and been tempted myself but my mrs won't let me hahah it is still a young sport so still has some room for growth and development but for such a young organisation it's doing well. I feel in the next 5-10years we will see a very strong roster of fighters
@@HouseOfDevlin haha yeah I hear ya. It's a shame it has such a reputation as being barbaric. I've only watched a few fights, but from what I've saw I think I prefer it to Regular Boxing.
Do you know Topdog fc aswell? I'm sure you do, the Russian BKB.
@@HouseOfDevlinare they not the same ? Since they are bare knuckle
Very interesting. Thank you.
No probs buddy, I have a little playlist on it also if you want to see more. I add to it when I can also, not too regularly but it is something I will develop for many years to come :) if you are interest the associated playlist is called pugilism
@@HouseOfDevlin I'm on board. Great list and subbed mate.
It is my understanding that pugilism originally only made up the middle phase of a prize fight. The opening phase of the match would be fought with edged weapons. thrusts were forbidden as being too dangerous. Instead the fighters slashed each other with swords, hangers and daggers. There was `the case of steel.` This was a pair of the same weapons. One in each hand and `the double fight.` This was an edged weapon in the right hand and targe, buckler, or gauntlet on the left. The final phase consisted of bludgeons. Anything from a cosh, through lead or brass weighted truncheons, to `sandbags` (a two handed flail with a sand bag attached to the end) or even quarterstaff. To win the fighter had to win all 3 phases of the fight. James Figg won his 1727 title with a cut to the face or ear, a submission, and a broken knee. But armed bouts ended when Tom` Barrett was disemboweled in a Dublin prize ring around 1757. Women's prize fights were very popular. There were team prize fights with 2 or 3 people a side. What we might now term `mixed doubles` fights in which married couples fought each other were organized. On one occasion an English couple fought an Irish couple for a purse of 40 guineas. They began with with sword and dagger. Progressed to bare knuckles and finished with quarterstaff.
amazing history
Where Did Boxing Come From? Boxing is one of the oldest known sports today, with 2,000-year-old depictions on the walls of tombs in Egypt and stone carvings indicating that Sumerians-who lived in what is now Iraq-boxed at least 5,000 years ago. Boxing got its start as an exhausting and brutal spectacle.24 Dec 2020
Funny how this is closer to MMA than modern boxing.
Catch Wrestling under "Rough and Tumble" rules in the 19th Century was a lot like this but even more brutal as it was pretty much "anything goes" to include fishhooking, eye gouging, etc.
Nice 1.. 👂👀 love true origins, , right n' propper history!! Even bloodsport has rules!?! Good job I'm a fast runner, and weak wrists , not Smurfette like,...ect....! 😅😂😈😤 .. I'm also working on moving huge stones kinetics style..... due to me size n' stuff! ( excuses excuses)...keep up your positive energys...keep up the heavy lifting 💪✌
Glad you liked the vid! And moving stones is hard ass lifting! Sounds like a good plan :)
whats the name of the very first boxer in the video
Is there a playlist for this series? Or is it dead?

14 vids in series atm, haven't added to it for a while but deffo something I will continue to develop over time
@@HouseOfDevlin thank you. Good stuff I really enjoy
@@drunkpilotexplorer7061 cheers and beers matey 🍺
Hasany ody got any pictures of a bare knuckle fighter kid white real name percy white from London pre 1960s
I see that stance resembling the WING CHUN stance, used by the citizens, of the BOXER REBELLION, in China.. with modifications, the elbows block the lower organs, and the most forward forearm, could be used, to clothesline, a heavy blow, or spin the opponents elbow. The head stays furthest back, and reversing, or circling, would be advantageous. I wouldn't try, it, tho 🤣
Makes sense why when an old time victorian thug challenges someone to a fight in a cartoon they lean way back like that 😂
Pugilism is a completely other Sport. Pugilists where masters of wrestling althoug. They knew everything about the Power lines. Modern boxer should have been beaten from them. No Chance a modern boxer could have against a old Scool pugilists.the pugilists could beat him up very heavy.
Why do ALL of these guys have such bad lisps!?!?!?!? Pay a NARRATOR!!
Seriously? Lol mate my lisp isn't that bad and even if it was really bad why on Earth would i pay a narrator?? I mean you are like a proper old school bully haha
I don't hear a lisp at all I thought that's just how all british people sound (no hate I'm American) but all British accents besides a posh London one I hear a slight lisp but you can't hate on the British bare knuckle boxing ? Punk music?? Some of the coolest things humanity has conjured up outta boredom
