McLaren was founded in 1963 by New Zealand Formula 1 racer Bruce McLaren and American Ted Mayer, who registered Bruce McLaren Motor Racing Ltd to participate in the Tasman auto racing series in New Zealand. Bruce McLaren won the 1963 championship, and spent the next two years in Formula 1 as a Cooper team driver. The 1966 Monaco Grand Prix was the debut in Formula 1 for McLaren's own team.
The 1970 season was tragic for the team - on June 2, during testing of a new car for the American CanAm series, Bruce McLaren died. During the following years, the team took part with varying success both in Formula 1 and in other competitions. In 1979, after a third consecutive unsuccessful season, it was decided to terminate McLaren's participation in the American series, which turned McLaren into an exclusively "creative" team.
In 1980, the company merged with Ron Dennis' Project 4 racing team. The merger resulted in designer John Barnard, who was interested in using a carbon fiber composite. Carbon fiber has already been used in aerospace applications, but has never been applied to a full monocoque racing car. McLaren used carbon fiber in auto racing for the first time with its new car, the MP4/1, which brought new levels of rigidity and driver safety to Formula 1. In August 1988, Dennis, the team leader and Gordon Murray began developing a new car, and in 1992 F1 was launched with a total production volume of only 106 units.
