2020 Vauxhall Grandland X review - is Vauxhall's largest SUV a hit? | What Car?

  • Vauxhall already offers two SUVs: the Crossland X and Mokka X. However, as its name suggests, the Grandland X is bigger, competing with the likes of the Nissan Qashqai, Peugeot 3008 and Seat Ateca. Remember to visit www.whatcar.com/vauxhall/gran... to see how much we can save you when buying one.
Does the Grandland X have what it takes to stand out from the SUV crowd or is it likely to wind up forgotten in the corner?

I had the pleasure today to drive a 1.2 automatic.
Overall, I found it very nice to drive. The car seems very solid, silent and very spacious.
The controls are all were you would expect them to be, and the navigation is located in the upper part of the dashboard (as opposed to the Kadjar, for example, where you need to take your eyes off the road to look at the navigation).
The 1.2L petrol engine definitely does not make the Grandland a race car, but it is not that bad either, with good torque (we were 5 people in the car during the test drive, but no luggage).
You have plenty of options to choose from, some of them really cool (like the 360 camera which is better than the Nissan QQ, IMO), yet you are not forced into some options if you want just part of a package.
What I did not like was that there seemed to be a slight lag between when I floored it and when the acceleration started. Then there is also that glossy surface which you can leave a mark on really quick.
But again, overall, I liked the car very much.

I recently had the 1.2 as a hire car and was impressed with the boot space and general ride. The SE model was a bit underspecced compared to rivals with no parking sensors, sat nav, or reversing camera. The engine was a bit flat until around 2000 rpm when the turbo kicked in and the lag was frustrating especially on hills where I needed to change gear more often to keep progress. Also for an SUV, storage was limited with small door pockets and lack of sufficient drink holders. Overall not a bad car but I would like to try rivals such as the Seat Ateca

It will be complicated to make 5 brands offerings from the same model. It used to be Citroën was quirky and cheap, while Peugeot was traditional and better equipped. Then, there's the DS that's premium brand with avant garde design. I get Vauxhall and Opel have more presence in the UK and Germany respectively, but it's hard to understand what that brands stand for.

Have a 1.2 petrol manual sport nav. Good sized family car, comfortable and safe. Really comfy seats. Looks good inside and out. Well equipped. Gear transmission taken some getting used to - you need to be fairly precise. Economy probably quite good compared to similar types. Fine to drive in a sensible manner.

In answer to comments that the 1.2 must be under powered actually the 1.2 turbo is fine and it really doesn't struggle on motorways or hills.
I moved to this car from a 2 litre 190hp Astra Biturbo (got rid of it as I didn't want to loose my license) and no, this is not as effortless (or quick) but even fully loaded will accelerate well enough from 70 to make overtaking safe and easy. You may need to change down accelerating up hill as it doesn't have the torque of a 2 litre Biturbo but I'm more than happy for those few moments to be compensated by pretty good fuel economy for such a big, comfortable and beautifully quiet car (the Astra was NOISY inside the cabin!).
The two things that took a little while to get used to were the weighting of the steering (which is light at central position but seems to tighten up as you turn) and the old school petrol turbo which initially felt quite "on" or "off" (especially when pulling out or pulling away) combined with what seems like low gearing in the first couple of gears meaning that my early driving of it was a little lurchy until I learnt to drive it smoothly.
I bought mine second-hand as an ex demonstrator with very low mileage, have had the car a few months and its been excellent other than the plastic trim over a rear wheel arch coming unclipped and the stop/start rarely working (I think this is a common problem with it not recognising the battery has enough charge). Just need to find the time to take it in to be sorted under warranty.
Overall a really nice car that I'm very pleased with.

I am looking to upgrade from an Astra to the Grandland x and have been considering other options due to the power diff, ( only a 150bhp SRI T) but this has reassured me, hopefully I won’t miss the power too much 😂

    • @donmacalister9323

A few years on I would add one cautionary note.
Along with the 1.0 Ecotech Ford, Peugeot and others this 1.2 engine uses a wet timing belt. I believe it was expected to last something like 180,000 miles or 10 years. It doesn’t.
I still have the car and love it but have just spent over £1000 on its 6year service plus timing belt replacement which is a big job.
Now it’s done it should be fine for at least another 6 years but anyone buying this or any other wet belt engine needs to factor in a major cost at some point.

Grandland X may look quite unadventurous compared t the 3008 but it won't date as quickly. The 3008 will look very dated when its face-lifted in a couple of years and made to look even more odd in an attempt to keep it "cutting edge". Sadly a trait suffered by many French cars.

I dubt about Grandland X because is Vauxhall! I remember when Vauxhall build cars in " old time" bad bad, maybe is better now? Also in " old time" Opel was a part, but it was different if F. eks. a Diplomat was an Vauxhall or from Opel.

I cant shake the feeling , that everytime I see any new Opel , I know underneath it is a Peugeot, and for me that is just wrong... And that new Opel design worked only on new Insignia, the SUV line-up doesnt look as good as Insignia, they look too big , they lack of decent proportions, the bonnet is too short and too high, and the car looks as if it cant handle corner in a normal way, like it is to soft...

We have had one for 2 weeks as a rental with 10,000 MLS on the clock.
Utter, utter crap, 100 MLS today and I will be quite happy if I never have to drive it again.
The ride is quite good at low speed on smooth surfaces, as is the steering and road holding, but anything over 40mph and aggravated by poor road surfaces it becomes very twitchy and difficult to place accurately.
The the power steering system that changes the effort required to steer seems to change significantly at various speeds, so rather than helping you to control the car effectively it actually leaves you guessing as to the required steering input and making it even more difficult to control.
The brakes are ok but very snatchy as is the clutch which is set too high and is difficult to operate with your heal on the floor, as you can imagine trying to operate a snatchy clutch pedal using a floating left foot results in very jerky takeoffs and lumpy gearshifts.
As for the "powerful..." 1.2 l turbo engine, it isn't... It's, at best, nippy at low speed but on the open road and on motorways it's completely gutless. After attempting a 50mph overtake...I didn't try that again...it scared the crap out of me, pulled out hit the throttle in 4th and nothing happened, seriously even allowing for the horrendous 3 second tubo lag... it may redline at 7000 but power is only available from about 2,700 to 4,500rpm, ......however environmentally friendly this engine is, it's not up to pushing this lump of car around.
The seats are hard and uncomfortable and the woman in the add (sorry review) isn't actually as short as she appears, the tailgate sill is near 3 foot of the ground! Try getting heavy shopping in and out of that..
But it has got an electric tailgate opener........

Currently sitting in a rental one of these on the M2 in traffic ruined my night. Its a miserable hateful car with a nasty unbalanced loud 3cyl 1.2 turbo petrol. Soon to be cheap angry pikey dad car fodder on autotrader like picassos were if its not already. Miserable thing its economical mind.

    we have the techline
not all come with some of the specs you mention we have no heated seats would rather the heated seats than the sat nav.
there is no on star service. no storage under the seat like the meriva steering is to light :( storage for a big car is crap the little storage by the steering wheel and door is cheep. the arm rest storage is awquard and not good if you are disabled, no drinks shelf/tray on the back of the front seat for rear passengers, there in a drink compartment proving you on have 2 people max. the gear lever on gear change is very clunky.. to much effort on looks and gadgets rather than other areas, the horn on a big car is a joke :( little girly toot toot rather than a deep bark. small reveiw window... turbo is no boost like the meriva..
would rather have manual hand brake instead of the blood electronic thing . i turned off drift control, i hate flashing on the dash it takes your eyes off the road, no cd player so again have to take eyes off the road to find music list :(

    • @lucas-zg1fn
      @lucas-zg1fn 6 років тому +1

It's not 1.6 136 hp but the 1560 cc. PSA 120 hp, by Peugeot. The Grandland X is product in France, in the same factory of Peugeot 3008. They're the same car, approximatelly.

      Why?

    • @lucas-zg1fn
      @lucas-zg1fn 6 років тому

At the begginning of 2017 PSA Group bought OPEL from GM group. Just one or two years ago the two companies started different joint ventures to use same engines, sit, exc. Grandland X and Crossland X are the first cars made by this new owner situation. Probably, in PSA vision, the 1560 cc. 120 hp engine is much more cheap to fix and use in order to the original GM Power Train engine 136 hp

I too remember the Carlton and Senator.. Both really nice quick cars and good to look at too. I used to have Vauxhalls' over 30 years ago because in my opinion they were at that time better than Fords. But, now Ford seem to be better, Japanese cars have come on leaps and bounds while Vauxhall seem to be going backwards lacking in style, choices and dare I say, 'street cred'. Shame they may be on the demise. Come on Vauxhall, you can do better than this.....

It's not an SUV, just an MPV with optional AWD. Terrible to see all these fake SUVs that seem to flood the market. Can't afford a Range Rover? Accept it and don't buy some stupid van that pretends it's an off roader.
