Our today’s interviewee:
Longin Glijer (born 1929), born in Wołyń. His father was a policeman in the Second Polish Republic. His family learned about the outbreak of World War II on their way back from the church on 1 September 1939. Longin’s father served as a policeman until the advance of the Soviets. He helped two Czech pilots who escaped from Dęblin and landed with no fuel on a nearby meadow. On 17 September 1939 he received a phone call, from which he learned about the Soviet invasion of Poland. He placed his family at a forester’s lodge deep in the woods and went to Kowel, where the Poles were to defend the city from the Red Army. However, when the Soviet tanks appeared, it was clear that the defense could not work and his police duty ended. He soon made his way to the Świętokrzyskie Mountains, the territory under German occupation, which allowed him to escape death in Katyn. September 1939 was the time of lawlessness - the Ukrainians were initially helping the Red Army, they were also chasing Longin Glijer’s family. They found them in Kowel, but at that point the Ukrainians apologized to the family, because they had already experienced the “prosperity” that came with communism. Longin Glijer also talks about the Jews who were inclined to collaborate with the new authorities. The Glijers maintained secret correspondence with Longin’s father, who was urging them to join him in the Świętokrzyskie Mountains. They were determined to do so, but on 13 April 1940 the NKVD came to their house - they were deported to Kazakhstan…

Maybe I missed some, but not many of your videos mention the NKVD and horrors of the Soviets. Nazis, Soviets, Ukrainian nationalists... Poles had it so hard during that era. Crazy.

Pamiętajcie, żeby dawać łapki w górę pod filmami, wtedy te historie będą miały większe zasięgi.

Słowa, które tutaj padają, pokazują również ogrom zacofania narodu ukraińskiego, za które my jesteśmy odpowiedzialni. Nie umniejsza to oczywiście ich zbrodni, ale pokazuje drugą stronę historii.
