Rating might not be the sole focus of a drama’s worth, but it definitely can’t be brushed aside. Afterall, high ratings means high popularity in Korea, more ads revenue, and a lot of buzz for its actors and actresses. Unfortunately though, some actors and actresses just can’t seem to nail the ratings, no matter what they try. Today, we are tackling these unlucky cases, to bring to you: Korean actors who seem to be cursed with low ratings.

I have watched 12 dramas of Lee Dongook since 2009 and he never disappointed in any of his dramas. He never repeated the same role so that might be the reason for low ratings.I am always excited to see more of him.

I think Seo Kang Joon is a good actor but his works are underrated. His acting in Are You Human Too? was actually pretty good considering it was a dual role.

Goblin and The Witch's diner is a must watch..
i actually didnt knew the names of witch's diners casts but that was crazy it had amazing plot twists which made me complete it in 2 days despite having exams- definitely worth watching

Navillera was just phenomenal.. The meaning, the depth behind those countless meanings... I loved it!
The thing about all the ratings is that they are highly subjective. Most of those dramas have good screenwriting and the actors do good jobs in playing the characters. So why the low ratings? They don't appeal to the Korean public, which seem to have kind of a vanilla taste. Strangers from Hell, for example, is one masterpiece of a drama (it honestly deserves the same recognition that Parasite had), but the problem is that it's really brutal and sometimes unsettling, so the category of viewership that it's aimed to is already smaller than let's say, rom-coms
Korean dramas are made for Koreans. So that’s why the rating from the Korean public are most important. It’s not the US that tries to reach outside of American public for popularity.
I'm American and I don't even watch American shows anymore. For.at least more than 5 years now. Get a lot.of ugly remarks now and then but.could care less that's of no.lmportance any more to me at nearly 83 yrs of age I've heard a.lot.trust me. Will always defend my wonderful.

I agree with you. Even I thought the actors deserved an award for the drama Strangers from hell. It held the creepy vibes all throughout the series.
Also yes most of these actors are part of underrated dramas. I was really shocked with the ratings of Chicago Typewriter. It was an amazing drama and one of my favorites.
These are not failed dramas, only unappreciated ones by a judgmental audience
SO MANY OF lee dong wook’s kdramas did extremely well internationally tho. Dramas such as goblin, strangers from hell, tale of the nine tailed fox and bad and crazy was very well received by international fans and viewers and he’s very well known for his roles. I don’t understand how his dramas are low rated in korea💀

Sadly they didn't consider international popularity bec most international watchers watch from illegal source and they don't gain income from them. They do consider rating from Netflix since they get profit from Netflix. That's why you see more drama released in both national tv and netflix.
It is kind of sad Lee Dongook here tho. Because all his dramas are dope.I haven't missed any of his dramas since Partner in 2009.The first kdrama actor i liked.
“Emergency Couple” one of the best SK Rom com’s don’t know why it flopped in the ratings.
Likewise “Chicago Typewriter” such an under rated drama, perhaps it appealed more to an International audience rather than a domestic one.

This list didn't take into account that some dramas were aired on the paid cable networks. In those network, 2-5% rating were actually good. Also the list included dramas that they were a 2nd leads, not a main lead.
16 ep dramas have lower audiences in Sokor, 5-8% is pretty good for them, maintaining 10% which is like

When the Weather is Fine is a very soothing drama. I loved the chemistry between Park Min Young and Seo Kang Joon ☺️
It's a rather slow paced story and with the Koreans fast paced life, it usually will not suite their taste to slow down just to watch a drama of this genre. I feel it's more of an acquired taste of the viewers for this drama.
I know right. Maybe it's not for everyone but I really enjoyed it. It's so calming and soothing and the aesthetics are to die for.

He has got a huge rangeee literally he's versatile and can pick his dramas well 😢 Though I guess some of his picks may be hard to watch... (Life... Strangers from hell...)

As an international fan, I find most of the popular kdramas, especially the romances, to be unwatchable: drawn out storylines with predictable endings, frustrating delayed gratification, unrealistic plots, melodrama, overacting. Strangers from Hell is one of the best kdramas I've seen. It is baffling to me that it did not receive the attention and acclaim it deserved. By comparison, I can't understand the hype with Goblin: an immortal that falls for a highschooler who acts and talks like a toddler. It was unbearable.
The nevertheless one is questionable its had so much hype . A lot of ppl didn't like the plot but so many ppl watched it, it was trending on tiktok for so long.
I watched Nevertheless but found it abit boring in some parts.
I’m surprized that Strangers From Hell and Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol have a low ratings. Those two kdrama is one of the best one I’ve seen specially Strangers From Hell. LDW did a very good job there and ngl, his chemistry with the mc is VERY strong too LMAO. It’s sad that these actors and actresses are brilliant and yet, they’re being ignored
Seo Kang Joon is one of my favourite actors and I keep hoping he’ll be recognised as a top tier actor. I’ve watched “Entourage” and I enjoyed it immensely and I could not understand why it was such a low ratings. I’ve watched all his other ones as well”Go to You When the Weather is Nice”, Watcher, Are You Human Too? and I enjoyed all of them, he is such a versatile actor and I hope persons will be able to appreciate him more. The only one I didn’t like was Cheese in the Trap and even so I still loved his character in it. Something must be wrong with my taste in dramas because all those high ratings ones I most times don’t like them and the ones that are low in ratings most times I enjoy them..

I watched Was It Love? by Song Ji Hyo, and I liked it. I know it was underrated but the 1% viewer rating was just unbelievable. I hope many viewers give this drama a try. SJH nailed her character as a single mom, and the male actors also delivered their respective roles. The story is very relatable, and the plot twists are interesting.
Ratings doesn't always translates to bad acting or being cursed etc... its a compilation of everything; to artists, plot/s, the placement of the drama whether it airs on free/paid cable, primetime slots/weekends/afternoons etc. It's a competition on the other networks(it's drama counterpart). And lastly it all boils down to viewer's preferences, if they like melodramas they will tune in this ex. SBS/kbs if they like action thriller detective stuffs tvn/ocn. Even if they like the artists, if the story from the other network got them hooked up, I think it's just unfortunate. Besides these aforementioned actors and actresses are good as always whether on the big screen or in front of our television. And you know that ratings is solely based on TV Nielsen ratings whether on paid or free cable, we cannot take out international viewers who are watching it on diff streaming sites and that's why these artists are just a couple of many talented people in the industry. Let's not focus on korean audiences... they are not the only audiences in the world. ❤

I'm such a Lee Dong Wook fan and never miss any of his dramas, because his got the ability to morph into each character he plays. I love that he can play different characters and that's so refreshing to see. All the way from South Africa
Chicago typewriter was really entertaining, Life and Touch your heart were amazing! Go Ara sometimes falls a little flat but Ms Hammurabi was enjoyable
I feel the Korean entertainment market itself is too small compared to how big the industry itself is with huge number of talent that it has. So to me it always feel bad luck plays a big role too.
Personally I enjoyed Lovely Horribly & loved Song JiHyo in it.

Navirella is such a piece of life, trust me i never thought this drama could be this better. For me Navirella and Happiness is the best drama i watched so far in 2021

Navillera and Strangers from hell are on my top fave list of korean dramas. Navillera made me cry buckets, it was the most perfect emotional yet inspiring tv series ever and Strangers from hell is that series that will give you nightmares for weeks. These series were masterpieces.
MWHAATW certainly isn't my most fave but it still was a very intriguing piece and I did rewatch it a second time.

Lol its really strange that 80% of what you've said were bad ratings are some of the dramas I absolutely love. I'm a drama fanatic, I watch nothing but dramas so I've seen many. A few that had high ratings were just ok for me, I mean I watched them all the way through but I wouldn't watch them again. The ones that get bad or so so ratings are really good and I have turned to them over and over. Maybe its because I'm used to stuff her in America that is pure garbage but continues year after year. Kdramas are my sanity in this crazy world.
I’m with you, found K dramas and never looked back. Been watching them for most of Covid.
Friends think I’m nuts, but I tell them, even with subtitles they are 100% better than most of the garbage coming out of America, Britain and Europe. In actual fact I don’t even notice the subtitles these days, the brain just recognises the words, I don’t think I actually consciously read them anymore. Like yourself, they have been my sanity as well. So many layers, to their storylines.
I think international viewers like myself have a different perspective. In the last 5yrs productions have become less regimented and they are exploring topical sub plots, testing the waters so to speak. Watched nearly all of those failed dramas and I enjoyed them. I am sure my top list would differ from that of say a South Korean. I agree with you about the ones with high ratings, they are okay but wouldn’t rave over them, definitely wouldn’t watch them again. Eg CLOY and DOTS. In actual fact an older series called D Day makes DOTS look like kindergarten, but that’s OMO. Greetings from Australia 🇦🇺

Hmm... I might be wrong but if i am not mistaken, in recent years, having a 6%+ rating is consider successful enough for the big three channel because of the emergence of tvn, ocn and other paid channel? Also, there are also netflix where the viewers can just binge watching the dramas there without waiting in front of the tv week after week that contribute to the low rating.
Those with tens of percent of rating are usually the most spectacular one and they rarely appear now. Let's not count kbs weekend family dramas. These guys will always get 28%+ rating no matter what.
It depends on the channel. 7-10% would be low for SBS, but above average/high for MBC. For MBC they only have a 1 double digit rating drama in the last 2 years - The Red Sleeve.
Those who do the ratings for Lee Dongkook are just crazy!

I love LDW's dramas. Only one I wasn't a fan of was Blade Man. Tale of the Nine Tailed is a fave of mine.
The Weather is Fine was one of the earlier dramas I watched... and while I did find it so SLOOOOOW I still found it endearing. I'm from a small rural Canadian town with a population of about 30 so it gave me hardcore nostalgic vibes as well, it actually made me feel less homesick.
I'm shocked by Lee Dong Wook being on this list bc everything I've seen of his has been awesome and entertaining. Touch Your Heart is ADORABLE and he was just perfect in that role. He's great in Tale of the Nine Tailed as well... I love his performances that I've seen so far. I could say that about everyone on this list honestly.
I love Lee Dong Wook and always watch his Dramas. I didnt realize his ratings werent good considering how good he is in them. Even in romances, he has this incredible bashful expression that you wouldnt think he could make when he's in something like Tail of the Nine Tailed. Dude was FIRE in that Drama.
Navillera was such a good show it had great acting to go along with a emotional story that brought awareness to Alzheimer’s disease, it’s unfortunate that people don’t like to support good stories highlighting real life situations. Chicago Typewriter was a disappointment to me as I was expecting something better, the story wasn’t the problem nor was the acting it was the storytelling and the fantasy aspects to the show that made the show feel boring and unnecessary.
But I love Chicago typewriter, I wonder why it got such low ratings
Too thought provoking and two time frames. Plus I will go out on a limb here, I don’t think SK a likes to be reminded they were ruled by Japan at one time.
Apart from that it had Yoo Ah-In as a ML, if he’s in anything I will watch it, superb actor.

This show was 1st in the Neilsen Korea rating in its entire run. The show was aired on TVN, a paid cable channel. The rating of 5 or higher is consider a big hit.
I adore Lee Dong Wook, he is the best actor, he can play any role they give him. And Touch your heart is my favorite kdrama ever. I dont understand why his work is so underrated

Korean viewers are not ready with THRILLER drama but most Korean likes romance drama. Touch Your Heart was the best facial expressions of LDW. Love Bubble gum & Goblin. Bad & Crazy is good. Waiting for LDW’s new drama...
Go Ara’s over emotional acting is too much to bear and i dropped most of her dramas or skipped her part
I quite liked her in Black, but she annoyed the hell out of me in Hwarang and Miss Hammurabi. I finished Hwarang, because I loved the rest of the cast and the story. I dropped Miss Hammurabi though.
I binge watched nine tailed when I was positive covid, that drama keeps me going everyday lmao like i wake up every morning and watched it until I'm negative 🤣 and it sooo great and entertaining
Most of these dramas are spectacularly popular Internationally.. I wouldn’t call them flops because you’re only taking into account domestic tv audiences… also, some of the shows here, like Life, The Watcher etc. are very highly rated..
You need to watch bad and crazy, the plot twist in episode 2 made me scream in my room for 30 minutes
I think people prefer online dramas because I also prefer it. We can actually can't watch dramas with families. It is uncomfortable. The witch did has over 12,000 people rated in Viki Rakuten also tale of nine tiled is top 10 in Viki Rakuten always.
Lee Dong wook is actually my very recent kdrama discovery. He's a good actor though I lost interest in "Bubblegum" because its too predictable. I liked "Life" although I was hoping Won Jin Ah to be his love interest there.😅 I love "Bad and Crazy".😍
Aside from being on a paid channel, the timeslot and day it was shown also affect the rating. If they will be compared to a free tv in a good timeslot then yes they are low rating but if they will be compared to the previous dramas on the same day with the same timeslot on a paid channel you will see that most of them are actually higher than you expect.
Some of the mentioned kdramas were internationally famous tho so I don't PERSONALLY think you can call them as 'failed'.
And all of those actors are still relevant and respected, their acting is plausible so I don't think they are the problem so maybe the storyline doesn't click with the Korean viewers or something?
Tale of nine tailed is a masterpiece. I don't know why it is rated only 5.2%.
It's the subject matter....they are all so exceptional at what they do, but whoever picks their projects....please....pick something else! They're able to still get work because THEY are good at what they do, not to mention the spectacular visuals!😏
Seon Kang Joon is actually one of my favorite korea actors.. aah I really hope he continues to make cool projects in the future
Well, we have to keep in our mind that a low rating doesn’t determine the quality of the drama.
I'm not fans of lee dong wook, but his acting on strangers from hell really nailed it. i'm interested with his new kdrama bad and crazy now. for real he did good too imo. kinda sadly he didn't get that many recognition in korea, but his fame in international didn't disappoint. For low rating i think its because most people dont really watch tv now, since i saw many kdrama rating and they didn't get really many good rating (except it aired on national channel and really hype)
Yoon Seung-ho is also a great actor but most of the series has low viewership rating.. I'm not a robot is one of my favourite

honestly, most of the dramas mentioned have been very well received internationally but somehow are slept on by knetz. I think it's a pitty because they really are good drama's.. Wonder why the ratings are so low with some, i guess right now knetz are more into dramas like penthouse and sky castle.
The ratings are referring to the Korean viewers which I can understand from their point of view. Most of the dramas mentioned mostly have issues with draggy plots, reused themes and flat/slow character developments. I'm not saying that the actors' acting were bad or what but these story plots did impacted how the interest and viewers' excitement in hope of unexpected plot twist/elevated development.
So far Bad and Crazy are great 👍

5-6% are pretty good ratings for me especially if it's on canal channels. We have to consider that less ppl watch TV now, with all the new streaming apps and replay system, the young audience kind of deserted TV

I'm so sad to see Black and Are You Human Too? ending up with low ratings and that the Korean netizens didn't like them as much as I did. Black, in particular, was the first drama I have ever seen. It exposed me to the Korean drama series and I loved it. Are You Human Too? is spectacular, especially considering Seo Kang Joon is playing a dual role. I don't get it why Korean people aren't fans of the dramas I like :(
As for Lee Dong Wook, Tale Of The Nine-Tailed is on my list to watch. Seeing how international people love this drama, I guess it can't go wrong for me then.
I guess lee dong wook is one of the actors who always shine when he become second lead but his works always being overlooked when he is the main lead.
What surprising for me is, I didn't watch any of these drama. I tried watching nevertheless but I dropped it after 4 episodes. Why? It only airs one episode a week so waiting for another was tedious and also the plot was just frustratingly bad I really don't get why a girl can be that foolish.(reason why some viewers couldn't take it coz not all of us can relate to her situation) so we rather not watch than being frustrated. (Tho I love sohee, she's so pretty 😍) lastly, songkang face really lacks of emotion so I can't emphatize with him. I get that is his character supposed to project (being jerk) but for me he's not being jerk enough, 😅 it's a deadpan acting. (He's really good looking tho 🤤) peace y'all ✌🏼✌🏼

It’s because the writers are sooo bad. They labour over and repeat endless plots that should finish a lot quicker then they do. The public get sick of waiting for a result. Boring boring boring to keep going over really bad stuff that is unbelievable.
I don’t consider a lot of these dramas as busts. Usually I think that 2% or less is a bust, 3-5% is average, and 6-9% as pretty good. Double digit ratings for cable channels are spectacular. Just to compare, the top US show for 2021, non-football, was this is Us, and that only has an average viewership of 2%.
How can "Tale of the Nine Tailed" and "Are you human* be underrated .

Most of the male actors mentioned in this video lack charisma on the screen. They may have the visuals but there is something lacking in their inherent personalities which make them uninteresting .
Does it include international fans who watched all of these shows because they were the actors (main or supporting)? Example Song Ji Hyo. I watched all her shows even in a cameo. I just don't know where to watch all her other shows because it didn't available on VIU and Netflix. And also, maybe during the airing of the shows, it has fewer viewers because we do have a lot on our table to watch. And also, I want to watch it when it is done because all episodes are available. I can't wait for another 5days just to only watch 2 episodes. 😅

Do do sol la la sol is very popular.. maybe not in Korea but I heard about her a lot even though I haven't watch her yet..
Tale of the nine taled is a drama I watched and is also enough popular now.. I saw a lot of people who watched and talked about her..
Those rating are not new..
I saw many great and popular dramas that everyone talking about them on tiktok and youtube for example.. and their ratings are not considerd so good..
But ratings is not all.. There are some people who are tired from watching things and just seems to have no patience or a bit of taste to be able to enjoy
some things in life... When you not take everything in such a judgemental way or expect everything to be perfect and exactly how you were want to picture them..
I promise you'll be able to enjoy most of the dramas and serieses... people drop things literally for nothing.. But people like me will continue to enjoy this
great, masterpiece, lovely, cute and interesting dramas!
It’s easy to say actors can’t act. It’s hard to do your best when the writing is an absolute nightmare. Lee Dong Wook has excellent acting chops. The dramas mentioned here, I have viewed but found the writers had no imagination and skewed the plot. Also the director should be held responsible.
Well I must say that I hated the character of song kang in nevertheless but that doesn't mean that he isn't a good actor when I watched sweet home he was somewhat same considering same expressions every time on his face in all the tough times (no hate drama was absolutely masterpiece) but when I watched love alarm and navirella his acting and emotions seemed so real I loved it and became from hater to lover of song kang same goes for Lee dong wook I was so scared by his character in strangers from hell but when I saw dramas like tale of nine tailed and goblin I became fan of him I wish luck to both of the actors for their upcoming projects👍👍

The tale of the nine tailed was a good film, the tv network in my country bought the copyright and aired in the channel it wasn't bad as we watch it it's good. And so thus the weather is fine and are you human? I love that show, i was upset that it wasn't popular in korea

I love Song Kang, and his acting. I think his shows get low ratings because he picks unusual stories. Nevertheless was really thought provoking, even if I didn't like his (and her) characters some times. It definitely explored relationships in a new way. But maybe Korean audience didn't like a female lead so sexually active... Navillera was a very interesting and charming story, but it challenged Korean beliefs about aging, and friendships with wide age gaps. I think it performed better in other parts of the world. I hope Song Kang continues to push boundaries and doesn't give in to stale storylines. Fighting!!

When talking about ratings I think it's relevant to consider whether dramas have aired on the "big 3" networks or smaller cable channels, since cable channels generally have lower ratings. This could at least partly explain the low ratings of some of Lee Dongwook's dramas, since all of his dramas in recent years have aired on cable channels.
I am currently watching Life (for Wookie, of course) and honestly...bit of a snooze fest 😢(compared to Bad and Crazy, which is really dope!). I will probably finish it in a month, or two...
Life is... slow (lol). I like it though 😂 but only on my slow days 😂

I loved Life. I think it was really interesting. And I loved Cho Seung Woo's character. I think that Lee Dong Wook's character was less interesting, but he still did a good job. His relationship with his brother was one of the highlights of the drama for me.
You are soo wrong!! Actually these all actors and actresses which you are mentioned are one of best drama stars. Although their acting are not recognizes in their own country, they are recognized internationally😉
I am a HUGE fan of Song Ji Hyo however I do understand why her drama is not rating that well. I watched all of her drama and there's no way you can blame it on her acting. She's a very good actress, she gave great performances in her drama. It's just that.. I think all of her drama doesn't have a strong story arc. I hope she will get an opportunity to star in a good drama soon coz I miss her works...
Totally agree with go ara's case.. I watched hwarang bcuz it aired in kbs world.. That love story just didn't feel right even when Park seojuns character did his best as the main lead.. 😐

My favorite find so far was „Pegasus Market“, which is literally sooo funny 😆 as well as „Yoona‘s Street“ and „Devilish Joy“
