Jack Dempsey Cichlid Tank Care
Вставка

- Aquarium Jack Dempsey fish care is super easy. The Jack Dempsey Cichlid is a hardy fish with lots of coloration. This is the food I feed my larger cichlids like Jack Dempsey cichlids. It’s a larger size stick instead of pellet.
I love jack Dempsey cichlids. Taking care of them isn't very hard! I made this video to help with deciding tank Mates and also thinking about their full grown size.
More Viewer Question:
Can be aggressive. Best kept in overstocked tanks with high quality filteration. They have really nice colors.
We have a jewel cichlid and it's our second one and he is just plain mean. We are trying to figure out what we can get. Can we keep peacocks with oscar fish and other South American cichlids??? Cause we are thinking of exchanging our jewel for a peacock.
Oh ok. Yeah if you keep African cichlids when not in big groups your looking for trouble. Best kept in at least 55 gallons overstocked. African cichlids should be kept with African. And south Americans kept with south american. Simple as that. They both come from different waters with different ph. • Top 5 Tank Mates for J...
We have a 75.... the fish we got are all babies. So they are no bigger then 2.5 inches.... we are planning on getting a much larger tank sometime in the future once they start growing.
In regards to temperament, its always easier to use a relative scale such as more aggressive or less aggressive than another fish. Compared to jewels most (not all, need the specific species) peacocks are less aggressive.
In this instance it is irrelevant, since peacocks want Very different water conditions than south american cichlids.
The ones I have kept have been less jerks than the dragons, but I always kept my peacocks with a lots of other peacocks. jewels have little man syndrome and always try to start crap. African Lake cichlids need hard alkaline waters. South American cichlids tend to need softer water. Though South American cichlids are generally speaking more adaptable to being in slightly harder water. Jewel Cichlids are from western Africa and are also more adaptable to water conditions than the lake Cichlids like Peacocks.
Jack Dempsey, midas, Red Devils, green terrors, blue acaras, severums. List goes on. All show nice color. All aggressive end of the spectrum so some risk mixing anything. Cichlasoma festae can be good, but can get mean.cichlasoma temporalisare cool imo, Vieja synspila.
Just remember when mixing large aggressive south american cichlids things can go south, so watch closely in the beginning or set up a barrier to let everyone get used to each other. My "big" cichlid (did africans and south americans at separate times) tank was a 200 gallon RR, but I did frequent large water changes with aged water to maintain water quality.
IF you want to mix big nasties, now is the time to do it. I would strongly advise against feeding feeder fish, it always seemed like the fish I used feeders with were more aggressive than those raised on pellets, flake, and frozen.
That not everyone is right. That you must experiment to find what works for you. Theres things I've done personally that if probably get quite a few harsh comments on here for doing, but it works for me. You follow your gut. Also, constantly monitor your fish for different behaviour.
Water changes are important. Under 5 gallons it needs to be twice a week. Over 5 gallons once a week. There is so many people I have seen in the group that say they only change the water once every few weeks or once a month then wonder why the betta is sick or not doing well.
Get a good filter and airation system. Use return policies, dont settle. Find what works and it’ll be easier in the long run. Want plants? An airstone? Go for it! But be prepared that research can be faulty... maybe test run what you bought in a container or bucket before adding to the tank if you are unsure of how something works. for example a filter clip may be improperly sized or a filter may have flow options. You can practice adding something (like using a suction cup) before adding it to the tank to make it less stressful to the fish.
It's just as much maintenance as a large tank. If you have a hard time with Water changes you'll hace a hard time with anything from a betta to cichlids to sting rays. Gotta keep up with the maintenance! - Домашні улюбленці та дикі тварини
I’ve got one. When I first put him in the tank he had a big fight with my green terror who was the tank bully. Since then they are best buddies and swim round together all day plus the green terror doesn’t harass the others so much anymore.
I recently got one of these and mixed it with a blood parrot that has lived alone for like 2 years, they have actually been like best friends, always swimming around together
That Tiger oscar is stunning.
I have a JD that I got from an aquarium store. He was about 2 inches, just a baby, i keep him in a 33 gal tank and he is huge now and I have to sadly rehome him.
I got firemouths and you did videos on them. I get jack dempseys and three days later you make a video on em. Wayyy too perfect on timing 😂
+Isaac Wayne NO WAY!! that's hilarious!
+Isaac Wayne same tank together or no?
Isaac Wayne please upload a video about your firemouth and jack dempseys so that I can see them.
Palmer Fish Cave At the moment but only for a few days then the firemouths are going in my 55. I wouldn't feel comfortable with them together for the long run, but the firemouths are giving them a run for their money.
Watermantaloupe I will soon, but they are still about three inches for the largest and are very skittish right now because I added a lot of hides to the tank.
So cool. I recently rescued one. She's my first big fish. She's about 4 inches long atm. She came in a 10 gallon and that's what she's in temporarily until I reseal a 55 gal. But I've never resealed a tank before and messed up so she sadly gonna have to be in that 10 gal a little longer
That’s a monster Oscar
I've had a JD for 7 years and the only thing I can keep in the tank is 1 sucker fish because he ate all other fish. We have tried oscars, other cichlids, he eats the sucker fish, other DP's.....he's crazy! Huge tank with one king is the way he likes it!
I have a Dempsey with a red tail cat, Chinese algae eater and an Arowana in a tank and they all get together fine. It just depends on the personalitys of your fish.
@Magnum Mountaineer I think it would get the algae eater first
60 gallons with a canister filter is perfectly good enough for a Jack Dempsey and maybe a Sydontis Catfish.
100% agree with JD's being "peaceful", I've raised my latest in a 125g and only had issues with other cichlids, it coexists with giant danios/Siamese Algae Eaters/Bristlenose Pleco/Pictus Catfish. It doesnt kill them immediately, but even livebearers have worked for a couple months (they disappeared after a vacation)
An incredible community!
Very, nice healthy fish and tank!
my 3in dempsey were the life of the tank until in add two 1 1/5in oscars
I have a successful mixed South American tank which I started when everything was tiny. They grew up together and are doing great. Jack Dempsey Male,Pair of Green Sevrums, Convicts, 6 Silver Dollars in a school, and yes 8 Tiger Barbs that are close to 3" each Barb. Have never lost a Barb yet due to being ate yet. Either they are too smart, fast, or just became bros. while growing up I do not know why. Guess I was lucky with them. I have an African Cichlid tank with Frontosa,Peacocks, and some Mbuna doing fine with a pair of Electric Blue Dempseys as well. All have done well and may just see a nipped fin from time to time. I am also trying out a school of Green and Albino Tiger Barbs in the African tank and so far so good! I would not try this with anything super predator wise like African Compressiceps, Dovii,or Jags.
I'm definitely loving ur channel..ur putting out awesome content..keepem coming!!!!!!👍👍
My Dempsey had a lot of babies. I love the colors as well. Love yor tank.
Oh good. I have mainly parrots and a couple of Oscars, a bit like your tank.
I love Jack Dempsey and have had tanks for years until I gave it up. No matter what I do ich always seems to invade my tanks. Last time I bought a NEW 40 gallon breeder to start out with, a small Jack Dempsey alone. Grew it to around 6 inches and I already saw the ich. Before placing the fish in my new tank I quarantined him as if he already had ich since this has happened in the past with medicines, heat and salt. I thought I was in the clear so I set up my new everything nothing was used and still a year later he got ich. I do live in Florida where I've read there is a "super strain" of ich. Got tired of watching my fish die and not having any more alternatives for preventing ich. I've tried them all including constant water changes, heat up to 90 degrees with salt, malachite green, methylene blue and nothing seems to keep ich from happening.
Did you clean all your water change equipment even your hands? I've never had ich in my tanks and don't know much about it but from what I understand it's a hitchhiker.
I bought 6 young JDs at one time. I added them to a tank with a 6in Red TX 2 4in Green TX and have had no issues for months now. Upgrading to a 6ft 125gal this weekend with a FX6, FX4 and 4 small sponge filters
I had a mated pair of convicts and had bought an oscar thinking he would be fine, They beat the crap out of him so I moved around their tanks and separateed them, they killed a blood parrot previously that had been with them for over a year. I was thinking of re introducing them into the oscar tank when he started getting bigger but I'm not quite sure what happened but the pair beat each other up so bad they ended up dieing. So it took me a bit to get even think about getting a fish for my oscar's tank. He is about 5 inches long right now eating frozen feeders, pellets, and shrimp and I finally got him a friend. I was scared he would eat the friend so I watched them carefully. The friend is a Dempsey cichlid and only about and 1 and a half or 2 inches but they have been together for almost a month now and both are doing awesome! I need to upgrade their tank though, they are in a 40g tank (i know bad size!) but it was meant as a grow out tank anyway! So I want to get a larger tank, I want to get a 100+ gal but I don't think I can afford that (unless I snatch up a good deal on craigslist) but I was also thinking about smaller tank mates (IE Tetras/guppies, really any easy- fast growing, fast breeding fish) mostly to create a sort of natural habitat where the two could possibly hunt down the fish or if they don't feel up to that, then the little fish would be a nice extra. Does this seem like a good idea though? I feel like it would be kind of like the whole ecosphere concept but with running clean water and regular cleaning. Also what size tank would you say would be best for a setup like that? 2-4 cichlids (in case I get more ;)) and a school of smaller fish- treated for parasites and made sure they arent sick of course.
Cool video👍👍👍
Great video 😊
Jack Dempseys are omnivorous so they need a well rounded diet but heavy on the protein. They do need some vegetables in their as well though not alot and they are from central America.
Nice tank man, Jack dempsey my favourite fish in my tank, keep him with South American an South African theres a bit of trouble occasionally but peaceful tank really
Very nice channel! Love all your videos and I learned a lot! A question about the green terror.. Do they grow teeth when they're become bigger? Greets from Belgium
Very nice. Like your stock 👍 👍 I just subbed
Was great out n about getting fed went to go. Small water change he's. In his cave on his side tail. Curled up internal filter sponge airstone and fluvile heater on his own
How can you tell the Male from the Female?? Look great. ps more camera on the fish.
Like the video...i have 2 small young jacks that i got from different places ..as their so young kinda small can't for sure tell what the sex was so seeing if you could help me...if their male and female I'd like to keep them in my 90 gallon alone together...I have a video of them if I could show you...
?
I just got 1 jack dem 1 green ter and 1 pick covit take God bless
I have Dempseys ❤❤❤ My tank is not peaceful the convict is causing trouble and I gotta move mom and dad she had babies and its bad... Also I hope they are ok cause the water temperature was at 80 and they are all at the top of the tank I am moving two of them in a few mins and fixing the temp I had just did a water change
Are they okay?
great stuff
2 fry Denpseys in a 55G? Maybe with a pair of firemouth fry? Is this a bad combo?
was thinking of putting a DJ in my 75 I got a 8in tire track and a 7 inch bichir with some leaches was trying to get a centerpiece fish and maybe some fire mouths or something but not sure what to go with
Lol imagine putting like 7 12 inch fish in a
120 gallon but telling people with 55 galls
They can only have one fish 🤢
My personal favorite
One of my two jack depseys like to fight the other one
Can a few on their babies go in the tank with them when they are big enough? Can clown leech es be in the tank with them?
I ordered the Freeze Dry Brine cubes for my JD Rocky & he LOVES it!!!!
Would I be pushing it if I get a jack in a 36 gal bow front
Do you have any electric blue jack Dempseys
I had my electric blue Dempsey in a 125g with my oscars and he bullied them constantly. Moved him into a 75g and got another electric blue Dempsey. I put her with him and now I have about 200 fry in a 10g that I have no idea what I’m going to do with LOL if they keep having more babies I’m going to freak out. I also had two pearl cichlids in the 125 as well, they had babies, moved them into my 2nd 10g. They started fighting so I moved the female into my 2nd 75g. No clue what I’m going to do with those fry either. I love my fish kids but man are they a lot of work
Erica Thomas you able to tell the sex of those electric blues?
I have a 3 and a half inch convict , a one and a half inch convict, 1 2 and a half inch firemouth, one inch and a haf firemouth, and a 2 inch dempsey just added. the large CONVICT and FIREMOUTH ARE CONSTANTLY nipping at the small Convict and she has to hide constantly. SHE HAS HALF A TAIL LEFT . and i dont know what to do.. CAN YOU HELP?????
My jack does not like my firemouth Cichlid. But he's ok with my blood parret and convict cichlid
I have a 36 gal bow front already cycled. Could I put one jack and nothing else as a sole tank?
That pretty fish has been trying to get ur attention lol
Jack dempseys oscars jaguars plecos parrots convicts and a mitis?would they work together? Forgive my spelling
How the heck do u get them to not kill each other. My jag and my red devil can't go with anything my Jack's are super aggressive too
Mine stays in my turtle tank and is the alpha of the tank he goes to the food first and everything leaves the pellets alone when he’s there
I no they are both to small but it's an emergency situation shortbody red Texas 55 gallon or 40 breeder for the turn around space
Ya my jack has his own little pipe when anyone comes near his tank. Loves meal worms, guppies, earth worms and crickets shit a june bug fell in the tank and even he didnt last long.
What tank should I put my my Jack demsy in I have him in my 20 gallon tank with a alge eater and with a with Jack dempsey that is smaller then the big Jack demsy
I have an electric blue JD and I had him in a 65 gallon tank at about 1.5" and all he would do is swim against the glass back and forth for hours. So, I thought maybe it was too much tank and not enough fish. So, in preparation for a massive change as far as tanks go in my house, I got a 1" JD and put them both in a 10 gallon tank temporarily. The new JD is super aggressive, and is chasing the EBJD constantly. Will they eventually calm down?
They are Ausome fish they have split personalities though 😄
I see it’s an old vid but do you still comment back need severe help with my two jack dempseys and red devil and firemouths ?! Please help.
If I buy a baby dempsey and a baby green texas to grow up together in 55 would that be ok?
What do people think about adding a smaller/younger (3”) JD with two 6” electric blue acaras in a 60g hex?
My local Oddball Pet Store owner told me I could have four Jack Dempseys in my 50 gallon🤔 but I also have a 75 gallon filter
50 gallons is too small for 4 JDs
They cool with african
What size tank is this
Can they do ok with oscar, green terror and severum and a blood parrot in my 90 gallon.. planning to get 1
ive got a 95 gallon tank with 2 10cm red tigers and 2 5cm demps, will it work long term?
can i have a jack dempsey in a 300L tank with dwarf cichlids?
I have my baby baby jack with two guppies xD
I had one of these fish years ago but i never knew what type if fish she was.. Shed basically been passed through the family for 5 years but ig my families kinda slow cuz she layed eggs like every month in the same spot and when i told them they were like "well i didnt know what those were, if its eggs then why don't they ever hatch?" 💀i feel really bad tho cuz i was young, dumb and basically treated her like a goldfish. Shed been living in a 10 gallon her whole 5 years of being alive then one day she jumped out her tank while we were gone for hours and we put her in the toilet but then she came back to life in our toilet.. But like 2 weeks later she died of ich 😕 and killed the 2 sucker fish that were with her and the 2 snails which i didnt even know could get it... Im probably always gonna feel bad about the whole situation. Even tho im never gonna get a fish ever again glad i know more bout her😊
This is some bullshit
i think you should get another fish but try for a small breed and treat it like a fishy king/queen and itll make you feel better about the whole situation
Fish are great. Just do a bit more research when you get one. Maybe get a betta to start off 😊
Why would you even share this story? Just makes you & your whole family seem like a bunch of idiots. Out of the whole 5 years and the multiple people she was passed around to, not a single one of you had the brain cells to maybe look up how to care for that fish? Really? Even if you didn’t know the type of fish there are SO many ways to figure out. Gross.
Can you put them in with convict fish?
James Martin yes I have three with mine
Thanks Jarred
Careful the Convicts don't breed, they become super-aggressive then.
would two jack dempys and a convict be ok together?
yes
Nik_ 4422 To be honest, with cichlids it depends on the size of the tank.
Do a flowerhorn video
I have a 2-3 inch jack and I want an oscar what tank mates can I have with them in a 75 gallon
How many gallons is your tank?
Can u keep them with firemouths
Would a green terror and a jack dempsey in a 90 gal be worth trying if i raise them together from babies, or would they kill each other?
epic rc guy I have a juvenile jack Dempsey and had a green terror until it jumped and no the water is not bad. The green terror to my surprise was more aggressive than the jack but only the two of them is pretty boring. They usually won’t kill each other but they always hide.
What is different about the electric blue Jack Dempsey?
It's blue
I've got three jack Dempsey juveniles in a 25 gal tank and a koi about 9 in long atm in a 55 gal tank would it be safe to put those together?
ryan mccoy you are going to have to get rid of the koi before you put the jacks in there the koi will get to big for the 55 but perfect size for 3 jack Dempsey
I have my male with a female salvini and acara and 2 Gourami's.
So females don't have the red top fin..
Mine was killed by my oscar in their 55 gallon tank i don't know what happened it was only kept by themselves strange.
i got both young but my oscar had outgrow my jack dempsey in such little time.
How long do they live
At what size can you feed them pellets ?
I have all tropical fish and my heater is not working my tank is about 75 degrees is that ok for a little intill I get a new one
Gmanfan 99 you may wanna get one quicker than you think. I had my Dempsey get sick when my heat dropped. Just Amazon one of these! I love them www.amazon.com/EHEIM-Jager-Aquarium-Thermostat-Heater/dp/B003I5UC0W?tag=betfiscar0b-20
Palmer Fish Cave ok thank you
Hey i have two Jack Dempsey i believe i have a pair they are about inch and a half in a 20 gallon long would it be okay to put a pair of black convicts as tank mates??? Hit me back up
Johnathan Gonzalez not in that small of tank! I wouldn't recommend keeping JD's in anything smaller than a 55 gal. I have two Jd's 2 convicts an angel an albino red Oscar and clown pleco in my 55 gal and all was great until my convict spawned and turned into a terror. I've had to remove all my fish from my 55 temporarily until the brood is big enough to be transferred. So be aware..if they spawn..they can be nightmares! But seriously..get those jacks into a bigger tank! 20 gallons is not big enough for even one jack!
endiglowgurl thanks bro
I need help my jack is lonely
I keep Dovii. Ever see yourself keeping one or two?
A&J Pressure Washing yeah I've kept them before. Awesome fish! The only thing I don't like is.. keeping one fish per tank. They like to kill everything! But you already know that 😂
Palmer Fish Cave lol yes i do lol
this ain’t boxing
Mines Don't Get along with my Oscar's at all
How can you tell if it’s a female
Can JDs be kept with Green Terrors??
Mike1 TC your going to need more predators to spread out the aggression. Just a Dempsey and a green terror in a tank will be bad.. need to spread it out.. get a couple dempseys, or a Midas, or a jaguar Cichlid too
I keep JD s and green terror s and there fine.
Can jack dempseys be with oscars?
Watermantaloupe in most cases!
Palmer Fish Cave ok
Do you think I could keep an oscar and a jack Dempsey in a 75 with no other tank mates?
ŽÄÇHÅRŸ RØDËÑTŠ no they'll fight until they oscar eventually gets whooped . I've done it before
Ok thanks... never knew the Oscar would get whooped.
ŽÄÇHÅRŸ RØDËÑTŠ yep and mine grew up together, I also find it's better to have a schooling fish like silver dollars because it distracts them from fighting each other
Theo Amos Thanks for your advice.
All that my mom’s done is swim facing down
Can you mix electric blue an regular Dempseys ???
Brandon Briggs I wouldn't do it. Electric blue dempseys are really skittish and usually stress out and die imo
Zachary Brown it worked out there doing good
Brandon Briggs nice to know. Just be sure to provide plenty on hiding places
Can you tell how to identify jack demsy male or female because i have a pair both are of six months old?
Is that a 75 gallon aquarium?
Watermantaloupe nope. It's a 6 foot tank
Palmer Fish Cave 125?
Watermantaloupe yes!
Palmer Fish Cave it is?
I heard that is not a good idea to give your fish feeders.
Lies man my big Oscar just got beat the fuck up n died by my Jack Dempsey
I have a jack Dempsey😐
We'll after watching a few of your vids I subbed keep up the good work ...check out my ch if you get a chance big changes coming once I move my vids are not as good as yours but trying to get better
What an interesting mix of fish, that tank is Awesome. New sub come check my channel out
How big is that predator tank again?
badass fish . Got myself an Electric Blue JD. Just 1. Your Fish Look Great . Nice Sizes .
I Subscribed .
Appreciate sub back
My jacks are wussies and hide 24/7 it's annoying as heck cause my aquarium is logs which means I never see them about 2 years old only other fish in the tank are bichirs.... very disappointed in this species
Jamie's Aquatic Friends, Yeah I got rid of my breeding pair over the weekend, I tried taking the logs away they would just hide parallel to the filter intakes. With stressed colors / so I switched them to their own tank they laid sideways on the top like they were being bullied in an empty 40 breeder for over a week. I put a large pot in to maybe let them spawn get mean. Nope they hide in the back of the pot.... I’ve recently got Into FHs and any fish that takes a larger tank that doesn’t bring me enjoyment can’t stay anymore. 1 community- 1 shrimp tank rest flowerhorns ;) I can literally lift them out of the water and drop them back in and they don’t have a care in the world right back to kisses XD and being pet LOL
That sucks. I have one and it isn't shy at all, thankfully. It isn't the species overall, you just have a shy Jack
Up the temp to 80 he should come out more
Please remember that they are animals BEFORE they are pets. They weren’t created for your entertainment. Feel lucky you even have the opportunity to view these beautiful creature so closely
Dude your asked for alot of dead fish. Having jags, Red Devils, midas in the same tank. Most of those cichild should be homes by thereselfs maybe a pair.
+Jd I I’m constantly moving fish around. But some of these predator fish do fine together
Also worth noting a lot of these guys do better in large groups . There are exceptions, dovii being a big one.
Wrong my tank is the same way and I never had a dead fish from aggression
