    I’ve had my EBJD for 9 months in a 40 gallon breeder alone. He’s been doing well. But I have noticed that he is pretty skittish. If I make any quick movements around the tank, he’ll get spooked. He also doesn’t like trying a lot of new foods but I am working on that. He’s also very perceptive of what is going on outside of the tank, and glass surfs if he notices me moving around because he wants to be fed. Pretty cool fish, incredibly beautiful.

    • @TheAquaPapa
      @TheAquaPapa  Рік тому

      How big is it after 9 months? Mine it really skittish as well. I. Not sure if it just because it's still young and being skittish is still Instinctual?
      The easiest way to get a fish to eat new food is to not feed it for a couple days. Then feed the new food. I recently got my 1 inch amazon puffer on to a pellet diet.
      Your ebjd will definitely be protective. It is alone so it's not used to sharing anything. These guys are absolutely stunning it's a shame that have such low immune systems

    i've spend a good amount of money on electric blue jacks the last 8-10 years.
    over 80 EBJDs. tried everything.
    mixed them with small cichlids (apistos, rams) they died. oldest one got to about 3-3.5 months before expiring.
    mixed them with angels. death. 2-3 months.
    mixed them with normal JDs texas salvinis... death. 2 weeks to 1.5 month for the last EBJD.
    kept them with small dither tetras... 9 months the older one before expiring.
    my best attempt was in a single species aquarium. 400g with 10 of them. all of them reached at least ~1.2 years. Oldest one died at around the 18-20 month point.
    to cut a long story short they just cant live around other mix of cichlids.

    • @TheAquaPapa
      @TheAquaPapa  Рік тому +1

      Yeah ebjd are definitely a struggle. But I've personally noticed more and more people keeping them secsessfully. Both in single specimen tanks nd mixed tank. I think this goes to show an improvement in Genetics over the past 5 years or so.
      I'm I wouldn't go as far as saying they can't live with other cichlids
      I have a few friends that have ebjd. And 2 of them have them in communities. Other then the electric blue gene being recessive and needing to improve genetics. I think the key it's stability. Not just it water quality, but in tank temperament. If you can provide stability in water quality. Had keep the tank a stress free environment they tend to work out. That's why it's easier to keep them solo.
      When you keep them in communities. In my opinion what NEEDS to happen is that the ebjd needs to be either the tank boss or all the other fish Leave it alone.
      The big thing we really need is for anyone that get there Jack into that 4 inch range that fish needs to be bred with the regular jd. That's the only way they will get better immune systems.

    • @reignmans
      @reignmans Рік тому

      @@TheAquaPapa dunno man, i've been trying any possible scenarios with them for a decade with no results as in longevity. and i love them to death.
      my next plan is to set up at least 10 different 75 gallons with certified JDs that hold the blue gene and try to breed my own EBJDs. thats my last attempt. thank god im still 32 lmao.
      oh as far as size and growth rate goes, they are slow growers, normal jacks growth rate is almost doubled the EBJDs.
      they also dont keep any kind of aggression, they can get dominated by the rare aggresive severum or angel. they are pretty docile and easy going. they be chillin most of the time.
      like you said the biggest problem is how fragile their immunity system is. thats the number one issue.
      every single EBJD tank i had , i had to be careful of its water parameters and temps 10 times more than the rest of my SA , CA cichlid tanks. i learned it real fast the first couple attempts at them i had (cuz they died pretty damn fast with no signs of attacks on them).
      My largets EBJD were 4 and 5" after almost 1.5 year. The normal jacks i bought at the same time were just over 6" at the same time. (their major growth rate difference where in their first 3-6 months where the jacks doubled their size in comparison to EBJDs then they slowed down)

      Sounds like you're just doing something wrong as they can definitely live with other fish and on their own. I've grown out plenty with other things and currently have my 2 ebjd paired up with other fish. One to a flowerhorn and one to a siquia

    I had 2 electric blue Jack Dempseys in my old 46 gallon bowfront for like a year and they did pretty well. One of them was deformed and stayed small, but the other one grew pretty fast. Bought them at an inch and a half long, but by the time I got rid of them, the big non-deformed one was 6 1/2 inches long. The big one did end up eating an albino rainbow shark so I moved all of the other fish to my bigger community tank. I honestly wish I never got rid of them.

      @TheAquaPapa  Рік тому

      Thanks buddy. I like the way you out that " some good successes and horrible experiences" I think that will be the name of the last video in this series.
      To answer your question I'm not sure. I have a buddy that has his in a bare bottom alone. And it's growing and doing well its just the fish doesn't look great. Very washed out.
      That could just be the genes of the fish though. I think it's probably between having them as a single specimen in a bare bottom tank or. As I have mine. I figure in a heavily planted tank the parameters will be more stable. I have a feeling stability in water parameters is going to be key for early ages. Also it's probably a good thing to have them with other fish. If you planing on putting it in with other fish once it's an adult. I feel that if you do put adolescent ebjd with other fish. The other fish should pose zero threat. This will make the ebjd be the tank boss reducing stress levels and at the same time get them used to not being the only fish.

    • @TheAquaPapa
      @TheAquaPapa  7 місяців тому

      Ebjd aren't hybrid. The electric blue Gene is a natural color variation. It's just a double recessive gene. That gene makes it so their immune system isn't so strong. Which is why you don't see them in the wild. Well that and a the ones that don't die typically get eaten becuase theu are seen easier.
      The reason they are so expensive is because they die.
      In a clutch of fry you might only get one or 2 that live. So the breeder cares for the parents then cares for all the fry. Then the fry slowly die off.
      So the breeder needs to make the money back that it took to care for all the fry in 1 or 2 good fry.
