Well back in 1930's my Grandmother was a widow with six kids in Iowa lived next to the rail car yard and burned wood in the stove .My mother said that there house was marked for the HOBO'S they could go and chop wood for the Widow with 6 kids and she would feed the Hobo. 2 years ago i found Shoestring on UA-cam and maked me think of my Grandma and 6 kids So Shoestring i'am sure she would have had a plate of food for you as well thank you for your storys 🙏🚂🤔🇺🇸
I believe it gets it's name from the old old timers who were headed out to california. Land of sunshine and easy work, always some way to get fed and find a roof. The old farms and small businesses. Pickin' fruit, paintin' barns, maybe wearin' a sign board for the local diner or barbershop in exchange for a few nights in the apartment upstairs. The west was where people needed hands, and good hands are worth a few benefits. Not SURE if that's where the name comes from, but it would be my guess.

He lived a very hard life but he got to live his dream. I would defiantly not recommend fallowing in his foot steps. It is extremely dangerous and It's illegal....

I've made plans on hopping a train in memory of Mark Nichols (Hobo Shoestring) something I've wanted to do since I was a kid. I'm a freelance photographer who travels and sells prints. I just hiked a 18 mile abandoned railroad with my 40 lb backpack and I slept in a hammock.

Shoestring was my friend. The day I took that picture at 01:21 he dropped his cellphone and broke that small tripod he was carrying. I miss him.
