Hobo Shoestring Missing, Not Forgotten! Train Watching, Interview & Best Times With Hobo Shoestring

- Hobo Shoestring has been missing since March 27, 2024. He took an Uber to the ER, returned to his home near Johnson City, Tennessee and then disappeared. He left his wallet, cell phone, medicine and train riding gear at this townhouse. He is a critically missing person. If you have any information about his disappearance or think that you may have seen him please contact the Johnson City Police Department at 423-434-6160.
A friend of Shoestrings did some live broadcasts on Tic Tok with the latest info about him. His name is Troy and his Tic Tok channel is AnywhereMan. He has some short videos with pictures and information about Mark, Shoestring. I made an account there called jawtoothofficial so that I could stay in the loop. I met Troy one time with Shoestring and he is a very nice man. He travels the US by freight train.
I made this video to show what it is like to train watch with Mark. I have been with him in Iowa, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia. He is shy so I rarely filmed him but you can see him in these video clips. Mark is a legend and one of a kind. We would text back and forth quite frequently and talk about our adventures to each other while we were on the railroad. He would send me a lot of voice messages but I never figured out how to do that. The last that I heard from him was the weekend before he went missing. I am praying that he will return safe very soon so that we can get together and make some more train videos.

I have shared Shoestring's adventures here on You Tube for many years. His passing has moved me in ways I can't express in simple English. I will miss riding along with this sweet gentle man. No more pain or bad weather, just a smooth ride in your Cadilac Grainer. Rest now in Peace Hobo Shoestring.

Just found out the Hobo passed away. Sad, sad, sad. He was a very nice man and made very interesting and entertaining videos. This is very sad. He was younger than me so I am saddened to hear of him passing.
His pain and discomfort are over. We all will sorely miss him but can take comfort he is now at peace riding the rails in heaven. May his memory be a blessing to all. RIP Shoestring ❤

Shoestring Mark Nicholas brought so much loving 🥰 memories to all that knew him. I never seen anybody that knew so much about the railroad as this man. He had the most interesting stories to listen to when he would share them with you. God please look over our brother he will be so sadly missed. Rest In Peace Shoestring. Amen 🙏🙏🙏🙏

Omg I wasn't aware this happened. I can't believe it. I've been busy and not kept up with his videos. I'm so sad, I loved his videos and he was such a warm and caring person. I never met him but ill forever miss him

I have watched Hobo Shoestring for at least 2 years I think. Prayers for Mark. Like everyone else, I wasn't expecting Hobo to go missing. Prayers for Hobo's family. Mark just struck me as a very honest man.
I found him 2 years ago on Thanksgiving
He has one of my favourite channels. I remember when he was in the hospital in 2017 when he injured his hand. He has come a long way since then and now has over 200K subs

And I couldn't agree more... Not to take anything away from the other hobos but yeah, he should have been crowned Hobo King that year. Shoestring has traveled in 49 of the 50 States, riden on the Canadian rails, and even hopped trains in Mexico. 'Ol boy has seen parts of this world that few ever will.

When out on the road, Shoestring would sometimes get help from churches and food pantries. Maybe he's in good hands somewhere but a bit confused.

I live about 45 minutes from Johnson City. We got notifications that Shoestring is missing. Everyone is keeping an eye out for him. We are expecting tornado weather tonite then freezing weather Thursday. Praying he is found safe. TY for your videos.

Hey Good looking out for the bro you guys, it sounds like he really had a badass bunch of friends looking out for him. I am really sorry for your loss, he was a really inspiring dude and I am glad I got to spend so many youtube hours just hopping trains with him. I also got to lose Jim Stobe. ShoeString? Thats a real blow. Much love to all who knew him. I am sure this community will figure out a way to keep his legacy alive. That young fella that lives next door? I think his name is Larry, Lets put him through College or Engineers School. I think Shoestring would like that. I keep bursting into tears. Mark was just such a positive guy and always had a fix for anything he encountered. One of the last Hobos of the old school. I'm sure there are others but he just lived his dreams and it really inspired me to live mine. Ain't UA-cam weird? I feel like I knew the guy and we never met. I'm pouring one or twenty down for you old Hoss.

I didn’t realize you were as close to Shoestring as you were. I’ve seen only a few of your videos with SS. I’m so so happy you had a relationship with him. I will ALWAYS have hope, but will struggle with optimism. I often feared this day, should Shoestring’s luck have run out. He was a True Living Legend; may he still be. He HAS to have known that so many people loved him.

Jawtooth Ive watched a lot of your videos as I did Hobo Shoestring. My favorite videos of all are when you and Shoestring accidentally ran into each other. Then when Shoestring says " but wait, there's more," will always be a classic.

RIP Hobo Shoestring 3/29/2024. Slipped on the steep rocky hill in back of his home into Boone Lake were he drowned. A fisherman fishing in back of his old home found him. His childhood friend Billy Ray EastTNrailfan will be posting a video message later on from his Mother and two sister Marry, and Jessica. He has also posted a tribute to him on his UA-cam channel.

i was one of many on line friends of HOBO SHOESTRING now that he has been sadly found deceased RIP. i had sent him numerous packages of things camping gear electronics to help his rail rideing adventures easier. his shout out to me was friend james. like a lot of people that got to befriend the man i got to live out through him adventures i could not do myself. i am gratefull to have gotten to know him. GOD REST AND BLESS YOU MARK NICHOLS--HOBO SHOESTRING.
Brian you and Mark are two guys I'd definitely like to sit down and chat or spot trains with. I've seen a lot of this country that I wouldn't have otherwise without watching both of your videos. I’ll run across his videos two or three years ago, and I have watched everyone of them since I’ve always said I’d like to sit around a hobo campfire at night with him and listen to some of his stories And I pray to God that they find that man and he’s OK but thank you again for doing that video of him that really means a lot to everybody and you be safe out there my friend

I remember meeting you both at that Hobo Con in Britt a few Augusts ago, so I'm having a tough time right now; I really want to be there on Saturday but have prior commitments. Mark is one-of-a-kind and such a genuine guy; I'm using present tense bc it's hard for me to consider the alternative. I remember gave him a few pairs of new RailRoad socks with a couple $100 bills inside them. Deep prayers for Shoestring to turn up alive and prayers for the search team this weekend.

I met Shoestring in Fremont Nebraska, you can see my car in one of his early videos. I ran and got him some supplies. Nicest guy ever. I know it's a long shot but I will be out today until sundown in Eastern Nebraska / Western Iowa looking for him at the UP/BNSF crew changes points and sidings. Holding out hope that he will be found safe ASAP.!

Hi Brian , I come across ( southernRailFan) youtube channel has latest information on his channel after I watched your video with Shoestring. Mark Nichols . Not sure last name spelling. update as of 2pm April 2,, today. He is in our prayers. He was in the emergency room complaining if sleep deprivation and hallucinations. Came back home but like you said his wallet ,pack ,and hat was left. Backdoor was unlocked..Thankyou Brian I didn't know about him missing till I saw your video.
