Hello! I literally discovered you a few hours ago and watched most videos (granted, they're not many yet 😅), liked, subbed, easy decision because two things i love very much are already on your channel title: Scotland and Moscow! (And imagine i haven't been to any yet! Hopefully Moscow within the year!) I am greek and i was happy watching this video in particular, as i already know all the brands mentioned, and all the russian words mentioned 🙂 I've been learning russian since December on Duolingo (+ ASMR and a podcast for listening) and yeah, before anyone laughs i have to say, nobody's gonna learn russian on Duolingo, however it's good enough for the basics. I've known russians almost all my life (and i'm 40), both online and in life, and all of them are some of the kindest people i've known. Happy to have found your channel!
It's amazing!, russian people are very open heart, honest and pure🙏! And I learning few more languages too!!! Duolingo is very helping tool, helps to bring people together ❤
Part of the historical center of Moscow is called "Kitay-city". This name has nothing to do with the country of China. "keta" or "kitA" is a kind of piles that reinforced this part of the bank of the Moskva River up to the XIX century! Back in the XIX century, under this wall of piles, on the very bank of the river, there was a whole town of houses of the poor. There were frequent fires here.
Well, the name of the China country in Russian means “The kita country”, meaning “The wall country”. The country behind the wall. So, there is a relation between “kita” and China. :)
@@KVentz ,No, it's not like that. If you pronounce how I just spelled "Kitay". Then in Russian it is similar to the eastern country of China. But if we are talking about the ancient part of Moscow called "Kitay-city", then this means only one thing: this quarter of Moscow was once fenced off from the side of the Moskva River with special wooden piles called "kita" in Russian.
Look how clean and orderly their cities are. Everything is well-maintained and properly regulated, from the metro to other public transport services. There's no graffiti, offensive remarks on the walls, or posters sticking around, which I believe is the main reason for the city to preserve its own character. Moscow looks safer and more secure than our cities. Most importantly, there's no fear of getting robbed or stabbed in the streets, which I believe is a ginormous plus point for Moscow.
Moscow is a head above all other russian cities. I also liked Tokyo a lot. Better train system, nicer streets to look and walk around, better parks. Food is super tasty and a lot of time it's cheaper than in Moscow
The most interesting thing is that not only Moscow looks like this. I also recommend visiting beautiful St. Petersburg, Kazan, Novosibirsk, Yekaterinburg, Sochi, Kaliningrad, Vladivostok, Altai Territory and many other cities and regions of Russia! Crimea has also changed a lot since 2014 (for the better)!
Love from NYC I'm absolutely disappointed with what's going on in the UK overall I have never been there and I always felt like even though no society is perfect you always had this charm about you and I couldn't wait to visit.. I still do but I'm absolutely disappointed that actual Britain's are not in control of their own culture anymore.. Same reasons here in the US I'm not sure which one is worse But regardless I can't wait to visit Russia.. CHEERS! ❤🇷🇺💪
you are not serious compare Toronto with Moscow. the biggest toronto ice skating is like one on the worst Moscow edge made by few neighbours to entertain their own few kids. Moscow is simply different universe.
You have to look at the meter-high garbage in major German cities 😅 More and more homeless people on the streets, thieves, drug addicts and people armed with knives...

Why don’t you come back from time to time? I’m Ukrainian who ran from all what’s happening there to Europe, and I also miss my Odessa. And wish I could go back from time to time, but I can’t. Why don’t you utilize such freedom?
Just discovered your channel, subbed already.. I am too old to leave Birmingham, yes the UK one.. were I younger I would love to live in and around Moscow, Russia in general would be OK too.. Watching from Canada my neighborhood that I grew up in the 90s, narrated by a Scottish guy is surreal. Thank you for this. It changed quite a bit, so clean and beautiful ❤️
Thanks for the nice walk. Important facts about the urban environment in Russia and the former USSR. You are a young man and you probably don't have children, so kindergartens, schools, hospitals, etc. are not shown in the video. Your neighbourhood in the video has 3 kindergarden and 4 schools, 2 big hospitals. In Russia, according to the rules of urban construction, a kindergarten or school should not be located further than 500-800 meters from each house, so that each child can walk to study by yourself without parents. Every school of 60s - nowadays are located in the middle of block avoiding crossing busy roads to protect safety of kids. Hospitals usually are located at a distance of no more than 15 minutes by public transport or 60 minutes of slow walking. Public transport starting at 4 am to 1 am, in towns at 6 am to 9-10 pm, time interval is not more than 15 min. So you don't need a car if you live in Russia. According to these rules, 80% and more of apartment buildings in Russia have been built. Each apartment in the houses has central heating. Оne boiler plant heats 10-30 thousand people. That's why apartments are so popular with Russians. It's just convenient. If you go to work in the morning, you do not need to turn off the heating and follow kids to school in the morning if they are at age 8 or more. If your kid is small just take him in a stroller to the nearest kindergarden in 5 min. Every morning you go out of your appartment and come back evening after but you always 24/7 have your room temp +21-26. And all utilities are cheap, on average no more than 30-100 USD per month for all inclusive. Everyone in the USSR had the right to receive an apartment for free from the state as property after of 10 years of work experience no matter what kind of job it was. For 70 years of USSR, the state has been building multi-storey typically buildings in cities and towns, because they are more convenient to maintain and cheaper if the government pays for it, and not you :) But socialism ended, and all people remained living in multi-storey buildings and received full ownership of housing as a gift from the state. So Russia is a country where about 80% populations has an own property without mortgage at all.
A wonderful detailed comment. For many people, it can be useful who is family or planning to have a family and children. Moscow and other Russian cities are very thoughtful in terms of the convenience of life. Especially for children. And there are also many clubs, sports sections, swimming pools, stadiums, music schools and other educational organizations for children in Russia. And many of them are free.
Kitay-gorod is actually coming not from Kitay which is China in Russian. The original word was Ketay (but somehow the word tranformed to Kitay years after), which is kind of circular defence structure, like a fortified fence

In Russia, affordable medicine and social policy medicines should also be available, so there are many pharmacies and they are often around the clock. There are also a lot of flower shops (I remember how in Cambridge I tried to buy a bouquet on Sunday, because we were going to visit a university professor and wanted to please the hostess of the house). In Russian cities, flower shops are everywhere, near the metro, for sure, and in nearby points they also work around the clock. And most Russians do not live in rented apartments, but in their own flat. There are completely different laws for apartments and flat (an flat is considered a living space, but apartments are not, therefore taxes are higher on apartments, but there are no requirements for the amount of direct sunlight that should fall on the windows of housing;n my opinion, it is impossible to register in the apartment). But at the same time, many Russians have a cottage with a garden outside the city, where they go on weekends. Just look at the traffic map on Saturday morning from Moscow and back on Sunday evening. Someone has a small house built by their grandfather, someone has a mansion. My family has 5 dachas - my grandmothers, my parents, my brothers, my aunts, my husband have one from his parents and my husband and I are building a new house together, by the lake. Libraries are being renovated, in addition to books, there should now be an IT-zone and facilities for master classes. But I advise you to take creamier varieties in winter, "plombeer", for example, or "lakomka". I think the British will also be surprised by the question "why do you drink hot tea in the summer heat?". The weather cannot interfere with tea drinking. Yandex surprised me, they usually worked fine. 🙈

"Kita" is a bunch of long poles. They were used in the construction of fortifications. Thus, Kitaj Gorod has nothing to do with China, but with the second city wall.

Hi Jim! Thank you for your videos. I appreciate your positive attitude to my country. Of course, we do have problems, but it’s just nice to hear that we also have “human faces”. I’d recommend you as an idea to think about “Moscow city design”. You may notice that all names of the stores are written are the same from the technical point of view: they have the same size, kind of similar font, distance between letters, etc. You may also notice that we don’t have huge neon advertisements like in NYC or Vegas. We did have them before but it was very disturbing to the residents. All offline stores and restaurants must follow these guidelines. The guidelines were developed by “Artemy Lebedev studio”, if I’m not mistaken. None of the bloggers have ever talked about this, but it does make the “visual daily life” more comfortable. Best regards and good luck, Julia
Hi Julia, I have definitely noticed the lack of advertising in the metro and the city, it keeps the place beautiful. I will consider looking at this in more detail in video
Watching this puts an ache in my heart. It reminds me of the United States in the fifties and early sixties. It looks so normal to me. It looks almost like I had hoped the United States would be at this point in time as I was growing up. I’m reminded of the sound system playing Sweet Georgia Brown in my high school gymnasium as the local high school basketball team warmed up before a game. Good times, happy times and the feeling of belonging. I miss it and envy you. Congratulations Moscow on holdings onto the good from the past!
Hello 🎉 absolutely buzzing to see a Scottish 🏴 guy here in Moscow … I lived in Glasgow for almost 6 years but my hubby is from Moscow and due to difficulties with uk visas we decided to move to Moscow. Well I thought I would miss Scotland , frankly I do sometimes, Scotland is absolutely stunning but the cost of living, weather and work were a complete mess… got tired of it… long story short, I love it here 😂 Scotland is in my heart forever though and hearing Scottish accent here in Moscow is so much fun 🤩 glad you’re enjoying it here, mate!
No graffiti or other signs of vandalism - that's the first thing I check in a city. In the UK they even celebrated and speculate with graffiti as a commodity. i.e Banksy or whatever the name was.
Hello! My husband is your subscriber and we live next you. I would recommend to visit Donskoy Monastery that's very close from your house. I would like also to recommend visiting the Danilovsky Market. It is food court where you can taste different cuisines of the world. It is also next to you.
Well, firstly, the ice cream is delicious, and secondly, in winter the apartments are warm, and sometimes even hot, thanks to central heating or their own gas boiler rooms in modern houses, so it’s not a problem to eat ice cream at home. If consumed outdoors at -25, then these are rather refined and unique experimenters, I think. At a minimum you need to have a healthy immune system 😅

Great video, I’ve just discovered you. Are you the guy who came over in shorts and a Russian friend helped get a coat, a Mir card and phone? Anyway, whether you are or not it’s great. My wife is Russian and perhaps when she retires we’ll move over. She’s still got 20+ working years, though I’m due to retire in 5 years. The first time I went to Russia, I was shocked too. I went before all the current rubbish, but what I’d been told about the (SeeSeeSeePee…..as I thought it was, until that first trip when I figured it out) was bollocks too. I grew up in the 60s and 70s when the Cold War was in full swing, though nothing like it is right now. Most of what I’d been told were total lies, so no different to now, then! My ex-wife was from East Kilbride and she studied at Glasgow Dental Hospital, but moved to Little Scotland when she graduated. (Do you know where Little Scotland is? You might be too young!) Anyway, Glasgow started getting its act together in the 1980s, and up until the early 2000s it was ok. I’ve not been since 2004 because my ex and I split in 2005. It’s pretty depressing in the UK. I just watched a video about caravan/camper city in Bristol. It’s disgusting really and filth is everywhere. I don’t know how our politicians can criticise Russia and China when they expect us to live in shit, with poor schools, hospitals and roads, not to mention extortionate prices. Why don’t they sort our country out before wasting billions pretending to be a great power? It’s a joke, unfortunately a sick joke!
Hello how did you find the courage to make the jump to move? What do you do for living? Do you intend to stay long term? I am looking to network with western foreigners in Moscow as I would eventually like to move there and do business there. I have what many would consider a good situation in the UK but I want to move for a while in Russia and like I said do business because there are so many opportunities with their import substitution programs and so many companies looking to export and aggressively expanding. I grew up in Glasgow (but spent most of my life England and a little while in continental Europe). I hope you respond and we could correspond a little bit.
I must say it looks fabulous there. I'm in the UK all being well visiting Moscow in early May. I'm really looking forward to the trip. Thanks for this video Scottish guy. Is it easy to get SIM only for short term visitors?
Shabolovskaya is still quite central. I worked there for 5 years. It's a very nice area. Technically the metro station Shabolovskaya is outside the ring line, but you can walk to Dobrininskaya/Serpukhovskaya in 10 minutes, which are on the ring line. Oktyabrskoye is on the ring line, too. Better to show them a neighborhood like Tsaritsyno or Krylatskoye if you want to show a more "normal" neighborhood. While plain, they are still clean and quite nice.
As Russian who used to live in Moscow for 5 years I would say Shabolovskaya district is definitely residential but it's expensive one, close to center of city and so on. It would be event better to see districts close to outskirts, however they also would be almost identical in terms of infrastructure and safety, but buildings will be older - a lot of typical Khrushchev and Brezhnev period buildings.
You missed one very important attraction in your neighbourhood - nice beer shop at Akademika Petrovskogo street. This shop is runned by a real beer fans and they offer much better selection of beers than all neighboring supermarkets ;)

Can confirm. It has nothing to do with China.

In Russia, everywhere is clean and safe.

Too few heat counters and because too expencive. Heat service is angry...

"Kita" is a bunch of long poles. They were used in the construction of fortifications. Thus, Kitaj Gorod has nothing to do with China, but with the second city wall.

Heh. Do you live Leninsky Pr 11? I saw well known yard and our friend's car in your intro :)
"Добро пожаловать ИЗ Москвы"- так не говорят, говорят: "добро пожаловать В Москву". Можно сказать: "Привет ИЗ Москвы".
Thanks for letting me know 😄
Great video, I’ve just discovered you.
Slavic people like sweets so they usually like ice cream.
Very intresting
There is an old monastery across the street from shisha place.
The Scottish accent rocks😊 So rough and harsh, I love it.
Thanks for the walk!!
Welcome to Russia! Love to see so many people from the world are travelling our beautiful country.
2:20 You said Oktyabr'skaya perfectly.
But my gut tells me it's ShabOlovskaya with stress on the first O.
2:51 - Peyrek Rostok kinda.
Sooo clean!
Thanks
Nice video. Good luck!
I must say it looks fabulous there. I'm in the UK all being well visiting Moscow in early May. I'm really looking forward to the trip.
Thanks for this video Scottish guy.
Is it easy to get SIM only for short term visitors?
You only need a passport, you can buy a SIM card at the airport.
@@adjinaabrek thank you
Shabolovskaya is still quite central.
Nice tour!
What a tube!)How could you skip The The Shukhov Radio Tower also known as the Shabolovka Tower(is a broadcasting tower) opposite Shabolovskaya subway station . The 160 m free-standing steel built between 1920 and 1922 .
Great content mate
Can you recommend me visit Scotland or no? I know rain a lot just curious.. What season the best?
Well, I guess if you want to get robbed, go for it. I did not say it, he said it.
Vertical rain is preferable to horizontal
Been to Scotland, loved it. Edinburgh is a must see. Liked the people, too.
Nice
Hey fella. Looking forward to more of your videos!
When I was about eleven years old, I loved to pick some ice-cream from a kiosk after a school on my way to a home even when it was -20 Celsius these days. An ice-cream is really enjoyable at the deep minus because it's warmer than air you breathe.
I enjoyed that mate (Scott, Glasgow (in a swamp in nigeria right now though).
As a possessor of English as a second language, I love different English accents, and of course love your Scottish accent, bro. Keep it, be glad and proud of it, we need to celebrate differences.
Hi! The place named Kitay-gorod is not "a China town" and has nothing to do with China at all. Its name derives from old slavic word "kita" which means a fence, or a wall. So basicallythis part of old Moscow was situated near a и city wall or may be was surrounded with a fence
