Great interview, took me back to the 80s and 90s. I knew when Italy conceded their first goal- a soft goal- from Caniggia in the 1990 semi final that it wasn’t going to end well. It was heartbreaking. Thanks for the rest analysis.,
Great Content and Guests Carlo as always, you’ve kept me occupied between games in Germany. Paulie made some good points although for me Bellanova is the one that needs to play. Lets hope for the right results over the weekend. Forza Italia 🇮🇹
Paulie knows his Italian Football. Zenga's mistake was the only reason italy even went to penalties. Italy only had one goal scored on them in Italia 90 and it was the mistake by Zenga. Italy 1990 was the best team in history not to win the World Cup. The team was loaded with Serie A stars, when Serie dominated Europe. Going into Italia 90 all three major european cups were all held by Serie A teams. Some of the best players in the world were playing for clubs such as Parma and Sampdoria. Paulie was bang on about France 98, Italy midfield was weak but forwards, defenders and keepers all world class. If they would of got past France on penalties they would of beaten Croatia and a limping Brazil in the finals. The french players had said it was the final and they knew that. France should of lost to Paraguay in the round of 16 in 98. Football is a game of inches, Italy struggled against Australia in 06 in the round of 16.
The mistake was made before Zenga when Baggio started on the bench vs Argentina. One of the worst decisions in the history of World Cup coaching. Baggio starts all 90 and you keep your 3 valuable subs to be used later against a tiring Argentina
Great interview loved Paulie knowledge as an Italian born man watching soccer ⚽️ from 1966 I agree with all he stated. Not much expectations especially from this lack of quality on this team.
I am utterly amazed at Pauline’s knowledge. He literally described all the feelings I had growing up watching the national team. I had a taste of it in 1986. But really came on board with the 1990 team which is still my favorite. That loss to Goycochea and Argentina still stings. (And he wasn’t the starter coming into the tournament) very impressive Paulie. Best I have seen
Great interview Carlo Really enjoyed Paulie’s intake on the Azzurri throughout the years It’s nice to see the same opinions on past and present players coming from fans in the states !
Paulie on point! Il divin codino was one of a kind and the highest level player Italy has produced. Spalletti hasn’t had enough time wity current group but his gamble to throw in Calafiori has paid dividends. The calciopoli scandal rocked Italian football and its effects ran deep. But there is no doubt it is back on the rise. Even at the youth level Camarda will be a beast! Forza Italia 🇮🇹⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🇮🇹
Finally! Someone mentioned the miraculous job Conte did with the 2016 team that had NO midfielders and NO strikers!!! Paulie also pinpointed the complete inability of any Azzurri (other than Chiesa) who can beat a defender head to head... no one to break down a defense... no vertical passing game... no connection between the midfielders and the forwards. He nailed it. And he saluted Baggio! And Baresi! Make him a football analyst!!!
@@ItaFootPod And I give you much credit for spot-on analysis. Keep up the great work! Could you also address the question of why the Italian Federation cannot see this? Is it politics? Personal? The fact that Conte criticizes the Italian club teams for not allowing enough practice time with the Nazionale? I realize they had Conte second in line for CT if Spalletti had not been able to walk freely from Napoli... but whatever the reason is, it is RIDICULOUS to let it stand in the way. As usual Italy is the only country on the planet that can't figure out a way to get their best coach on the national team.
@@AD50697 Thanks man! We discuss these issues on today's pod (out in a few hours). So make sure to hit that bell to get a notification when we publish content =)
After watching the first three games, I think our midfield is more problematic than the attack. Can't hold possession, scared to progress the ball... extremely shaky.
Just watched Turkey beat Austria 2-1. Imagine if Montella brings Turkey to the final, would Italy offer him the CT job? 😁 Austria is a very well-oiled team. Montella got his tactics right today.
The one thing is the Italian youth pipeline is loaded with talent that should be starting in serie a. Its all about the money for the clubs and they let italian kids rot in favor of mercenaries who come every 2 years do no contribute to Italian national team. Serie A has let the kids play!
this was a really nice surprise to hear Paulie being so knowledgeable about football. due to the amount of utter stupidity i often hear from Italo-Americani regarding "soccer 🤮" i never really expect an american to say anything intelligent but he really does know his shit about the Azzurri 👏 he is absolutely spot-on about El Shaarawy being the only person in the team that can beat a man in a 1v1 situation and he's also correct to question why Verratti wasnt called up because i would rather have Verratti instead of Jorginho any day of the week. the only thing i think he got wrong was when he said that the France98 team had a mediocre midfield. as a Roma fan i specifically remember DiBiago being 1 of the best midfielders in that whole tournament.(his pass for Vieri's goal v Norway was so beautiful that even Pirlo would have been happy with it) i'm pretty sure he even got voted by none other than the German public as the best midfielder full stop.
I agree with Paulie. If that 98 team had a Pirlo unstoppable. UA-cam the 1997 game between Italy and Brazil that ended 3-3. Greatest game I have ever watched. It was like watching Ward vs Gatti in boxing
@@Tony-lt2jr I don't need to youtube it. I was with my dad watching the game at the stade Gerland 😂 For me personally my favorite ever game has always been olanda v Italia at euro2000. Playing with 10men for 90mins. Surviving 2 pens in normal time. Totti having an amazing goal disallowed by filthy uefa who wanted a Olanda v Francia final, and we still eventually won and shut up the entire stadium. It was amazing.
Didnt know Paulie even liked football! Nice interview Carlo
Glad you liked it

Absolutely loved listening to this. As a Boxing and soccer fan and a Brooklynite, really enjoyed listening to Paulie. He has a gift for commentary.
Thanks man! Glad you enjoyed it. Paulie is a great guest

Me too Bellanova is perfect for this team
Paulie 100 pct on Baggio the very best Italian player of all time

Starting with Vialli instead of Baggio was also a mistake IMO
1990 was the only time I actually cried and couldn’t sleep but we played too defensively after going up 1-0

He sure does
True. Di Matteo was in that 98 side. Also Euro 2000, they were lucky against the Dutch but should have held on against the French in the final.

We've had Paulie on 3-4 times. He is very very knowledgeable
I’m telling you right now…Paulie is more knowledgeable than 99 percent of the fans out there.
Agreed.
this boy knows his stuff
He sure does
Paulie knows more about football than boxing. Guy said that Fury was gonna dominate Usyk
Paulie is great
Forza Azurri..Following from Mauritius

Paulie speaks like he is on speed. Its like an assault!
Magic Man in the ring. Magic Man out of it
Paulie seems a massive fan, sheesh. Love it.
Oh he is
Vieri great choice another one was Pippo Inzaghi for goal scoring with Pablito also in the mix
Good shout

I would put 433
Dona, cambaiso, bastone, mancini, bellnova, pellegrini, fagiole, barella, el sherawy, scamacca, chiesa
Didnt go well with the 4-3-3
Why no love for Barella ? He played decent against Albania...I think he can step up next match.
Unfortunately noone stepped up
Spalletti is lost. Conte would get this team to the final
Youre not wrong

If somehow spaletti can get the attack and team in general to click, then they can go far.
He didnt. Check out or post mortem pod out tomorrow
Don't like the Al-Sharawi idea - I think he's more bang average than ton of the other average players we have
