IMPORTANT! The Nebula Model 2 Emulator does not give good support for this game: there are some graphics bugs. For the Nebula Emulator, be sure to use the Twin cabinet revision A rom "indy500" for the best game experience, NOT the deluxe sit-down cabinet rom. Follow this link for a file to place in your 'scripts' folder that enables a widescreen hack. Rename the file "indy500.lua" to use the widescreen hack with the Indy 500 Rev. A Twin rom.

Sega Indianapolis 500 is difficult as it is, but Highland Raceway is arguably the hardest track. While Bayside Street is a challenge with its twisting turns and narrow straights, Highland Raceway increases the difficulty further by having massive changes in elevation, unpredictable banked turns, and a short length, all of which make finishing on the podium all that much harder. The graphics and driving model were state-of-the-art and very impressive in 1995, but the strange geometry of the road on Highland Raceway leads to unpredictable handling and a very bumpy ride if you use the first-person or nose camera views.
The sweeping downhill chicane is the most impressive feature of this track, but it can either feel great like a rollercoaster as you scream down it or it can feel very disorienting as you hit the wall and spin the car out. Getting this corner just right is a very rewarding feeling and can make a difference of several seconds on your lap time. When driving up the hill leading up to it, many drivers get scared by the signs at the top of the hill and turn right as they drive over the crest, only to crash into the wall during the steep decent. Do not let the signs trick you; stay on the right side of the track when climbing the hill, then do not turn the car until you come over the crest of the hill. If you continue straight and avoid steering too sharply, your car should go straight through the sand and grass off to the left side of the road for a split second, then cut back across into the center of the chicane. Take control of the car again when you are here in the middle of the chicane, downshift to 5th gear, and pull the car through the rest of the corner. Be careful not to bump other cars during this turn when traffic is around and be sure not to accidentally drive into the wall on the left side of the track as you go over the crest of the hill!
The final corner is a tricky square corner. If you hit this corner too fast, you will end up in the sand on the outside of the track and the car could even spin out. Remember to start outside to the right of the track and try to clip the apex the best you can. As you turn in, brake hard and shift down twice to 4th gear. After you pass the apex of the corner, get back on the throttle quickly to catch the car and avoid having the back end slide out. Keep in mind that this track is fairly short and you only have three laps to work with, so make this and the rest of your corners as clean as possible to have the best shot at finishing in first place. You will need to be aggressive, but bumping cars in the middle of corners will likely result in a spin out, so take your time to make your passes and use the slipstream mechanic to slingshot around opponents on straightaways.

Wow this track is literally Laguna Seca with no t1 hairpin and a banked corner linking the 90 degree left to a downhill left connecting an accurate copy of Lagua Seca's northern complex!

I've changed computers and misplaced my files, but the tutorial here can help you out: www.reddit.com/r/emulation/comments/5qs1g0/nebula_model_2_enable_native_widescreen_hack/
It's also important that you use the standard twin cabinet "indy500" romset and not the deluxe sitdown! They wanted to use giant widescreen monitors in the deluxe cabinet, but the hardware did not support widescreen resolutions. To work around this, they modified the camera code in the deluxe romset to compress everything horizontally so that when the standard 4:3 signal was displayed on the widescreen monitors it would stretch back out and look normal. The Nebula emulator doesn't know how to handle this, so what you see is the hacky, squished 4:3 signal; instead you need to use the twin cabinet romset and use the widescreen fix for Nebula to get proper widescreen!
