They should make a sequel to this game called "Paperman", where we play as Paperboy all grown up. He's unemployed and homeless because no one reads newspapers anymore. So he runs through these old neighborhoods, gathering up the old, unread newspapers (to use as blankets and toilet paper).
+TortureVision lol nice and maybe the old man cango inside the houses this time to trigger a virus in the computer. In which the customer has to go back and buy the news paper to keep up with world events lol.
That's a pretty angry neighborhood, they get so pissed off when people don't deliver the newspaper correctly they paint the entire outside of their houses red
I had Paperboy 2 for the SNES when I got the system. Just that and Super Mario World and the game definitely grew on me. I used to love busting people's windows who weren't subscribed to me. I remember playing this NES version at my friend's once and being surprised how similar the games were, since Super Mario, Zelda, etc. had all changed quite a bit in their remakes.
I used to play this in the arcade. It had a set of handlebars for the controller. There were more things in the arcade version than in the NES version. I remember a burglar trying to get into a house.
Maybe Pat the NES Punk composed the music and the people who made Paperboy stole the music by building a time machine and traveling into the future. Or not.
I grew up playing basically every incarnation of Paperboy I could get my hands on, including the NES one and even the Tiger games one. Surprisingly the Tiger one had memorable music to me, despite how cheap all of its sound effects were. But by far the Genesis versions of Paperboy 1 and 2 both were the best ones. The dialogue your character gives to everything makes it really worthwhile, and the graphics and music for both were great. It's definitely a game that takes a lot of practice to get used to the controls and throwing trajectory and where obstacles come about. But very fun indeed.
I liked playing this in the arcade where it had the bicycle handlebars to control the bike. This was one of those Atari games like Toobin, APB, or Super Sprint that had a distinct sound and look that i loved in the arcades.
The Nes version is a great port but, the arcade version has those awesome voice samples which are provided by a Texas Instruments Speech chip the same used in the Speak and Spell.
When I was a kid, I actually had no idea that "Paperboy" (which I actually had on the Game Boy) was based on an arcade game, which I found out after seeing it playable as part of "Midway's Arcade Treasures" on the PS2/Gamecube/Xbox.
Many memories playing this game as a kid. still looking for a copy, where i live the game stores are crazy high prices aaaaand flea markets are hard to find.
There is something appealing and majestic, if you will, about this game. The game has a simple concept and I always found it very relaxing. The neighborhood setting is comforting and the music is calming. I know I'm looking way too much into this and I'm not normally one to look so deeply into something we're just meant to enjoy, but I truly enjoy this game.
I loved this game as a kid because of the sweet arcade version had a set of BMX handlebars as the controller. The NES version was hard as hell, almost as much as the arcade I thought. Which was weird at the time of always hungry arcade machines, the NES ports were usually simpler and easier, like SMB.
My sister (born '76) and I (born '84) played the crap out of this game when it came out. The training course (for some reason I always called it an obstacle course) was my favorite part.
The closest I came was in biking along with my cousin and helping him out on his paper route when we were 12 and 14. Just for one morning. It's not easy to bike with heavy sacks of newspapers on your handlebars.
I have Paperboy 2 on SNES. It's even more challenging since after the week is finished you go to an even higher-scale neighborhood with even larger houses. Not really sure where it ends though.
Yo, AVGN, wanted to say thanks for covering all those old Atari and outdated console games. They likely would've been long forgotten, if it weren't for your commentaries. Not....that I cared for them, but.....they're a form of art, and it'd be unfortunate for any art, shitty or not, to be forgotten.
This game was great in the arcade, it's controller was a set of bike handlebars, however yeah, it was one of those games where you'd complain "WTF is with all this shit trying to kill me, I'm just delivering a damn paper!"
If you press the pause button at the same time that you hit the street corner light with the newspaper, it will glitch and start dinging. Kind of sounds like a bomb countdown.
I played the Game Boy port once when a friend brought it to school. I broke three windows on one house and the owner ran out with what I believe was a knife within that same second. Good times.
classic NES game. I love to play this every now and then and show off to how far i can get :) Best part of the game is when 3 things crash into you. lol I think my favorite obstacle to hit with a paper is the garbage cans. He's got to be throwing that paper at like 40mph to knock over a full trash can lol
I have two copies of this game for the original Game Boy. My personal favorite thing to do is to chuck the papers through the customers' windows and yell "INSTANT DELIVERY!!!"
I still have Paperboy 2 for my Sega Genesis. The big twists in that game? There are papers to deliver on BOTH sides of the street, and you can play as PAPERGIRL! Papergirl is a ginger.
Guys have you seen the Commodore 64 version? Looks and sounds much more polished, in fact the video made me wanna go play it in an emulator. The music also kicks a lot of ass, well sound is one the greatest features of the C64, Amiga and Commodore computers.
Love this game, still have the Mega drive version, interestingly Mega Drive had a sequel which was a massive upgrade where you delivered to both sides of the street and had way more interactive obstacles, such as being able to drop a car on a non-subscriber whilst they repair it from underneath XD
Do you guys take requests? If so then I'd like to see you guys co-op either the original Mario Bros. or Joust. Back in the day we'd get some friends over and have a blast with those games.
Art fact: Paperboy uses an isometric perspective which is actually an impossible perspective in real life. That's why it never feels right whenever you maneuver off that base plane and move toward or away from the houses. Any real perspective would have a vanishing point in the direction that the paperboy is traveling.
Paperboy is one of those games in the NES days I always heard about and assumed was some kind of big deal but never actually played. I think to this day I've still never played it
ah I remember playing the gameboy version of this at my friend's house. I couldn't really get down which houses I was supposed to deliver papers to so I kinda just observed what people on the sidewalk were doing... and then I saw what seemed to me like a dude humping the ground or something? I was amused and confused. XD
Mike says nothing beats the scream in American Gladiators, but I think it's clear Mike's screaming in the Pilotwings 64 video is on par with the Wilhelm Scream.
yeah Mindscape usually made crappy games, this one was a gem but yeah tough controls...oh and the Grim Reaper just wants to read those Obituaries! haha
They should make a sequel to this game called "Paperman", where we play as Paperboy all grown up. He's unemployed and homeless because no one reads newspapers anymore. So he runs through these old neighborhoods, gathering up the old, unread newspapers (to use as blankets and toilet paper).
Came to mind when I saw your comment, look for this vid:
Paperboy 3 the hard way
+Blaze Piffington Nice! I would definitely play that game. :)
😂
+TortureVision bad game
+TortureVision lol nice and maybe the old man cango inside the houses this time to trigger a virus in the computer. In which the customer has to go back and buy the news paper to keep up with world events lol.
Mike rockin' the AVGN look!
+Nestalgica Looks like he's about to go to a wedding with them cuffs.
+Nestalgica Next season of Board James, it was Mike all along!
He sure is.
That's a pretty angry neighborhood, they get so pissed off when people don't deliver the newspaper correctly they paint the entire outside of their houses red
I never knew about hitting the targets at the end of the stage... I always just tried to get to the end (which was hard enough imo)
Same here
I generally didn’t care about scores in most games - it was more about whist finishing the game
it does have a funky baseline tho
+Stuart Corps Which was probably funkier BEFORE it was compressed to shit.
analog bass FTW.
+Stuart Corps so does my fart, smell it... tho bro
+Stuart Corps Paperboy is a Soul... Man!... Er, boy.
I had Paperboy 2 for the SNES when I got the system. Just that and Super Mario World and the game definitely grew on me. I used to love busting people's windows who weren't subscribed to me. I still enjoy this game...but I LOVED the arcade game with the bike handlebars. One of my favorite Arcade games from the 80s.
The guy at 9:11 always reminded me of Ric Flair.
+Intimidation Woooooooooo!
+Intimidation Not enough blood in the forehead.
+Intimidation Limousine ridin'.........
He reminded me of Al Quaeda.
+211Appolo Plane flyin, wheelin dealin son of a gun. WOOOOO!!!
I used to play this in the arcade. It had a set of handlebars for the controller. There were more things in the arcade version than in the NES version. I remember a burglar trying to get into a house.
Doesn't Pat the Nes Punk use this music?
+Nathan Robinson Yes
+Nathan Robinson Use, steal... same thing!
Maybe Pat the NES Punk composed the music and the people who made Paperboy stole the music by building a time machine and traveling into the future. Or not.
play Paperboy 2 on SNES. its a bit harder and more fun.
+allegedman That game was fun too! I played it for DOS at school.
a DOS port? i have to research this...
That's right!
+DraculaOmega Play PB2 DOS port too, have lots of fun LOL
+allegedman I totally agree! When I found a copy of the game I had to shell out $1.99 for it.
I grew up playing basically every incarnation of Paperboy I could get my hands on, including the NES one and even the Tiger games one. Had this on Gameboy, the music is burned forever in my brain.
Don't feel bad Mike, I always thought that was a lawnmower too.
Thanks for always making entertaining videos guys!
Hey Mike! You ever played a game and be like it is it ever possible to be more like it is but it do
+AmbientPlanet huh?
It's a joke from one of mikes live streams I believe ninja gaiden lmfao sounds like something Bill Cosby would say on family guy
+AmbientPlanet Mike answered your question last week. So shut up!
Paperboy was one of my favorite NES games. I played it a lot and it was a great mix of challenge and crudely represented vandalism.
The Nes version is a great port but, the arcade version has those awesome voice samples which are provided by a Texas Instruments Speech chip the same used in the Speak and Spell.
+branaa09 Speak n Spell was awesome, specifically the bright orange/red one.
+branaa09 The arcade version also has great music.
+branaa09 the cow says sherzoooo
Aw I remember this game. I always sucked at it but I love it for nostalgia reasons.
When I was a kid, I actually had no idea that "Paperboy" (which I actually had on the Game Boy) was based on an arcade game, which I found out after seeing it playable as part of "Midway's Arcade Treasures" on the PS2/Gamecube/Xbox.

I remember playing this in the arcade. I need to pick it up for the NES! Such a fun game!
I was a substitute paperboy for a week or two. It wasn't bad.
'Merica
Don't forget the occasional 50 guys at Lou's Cafe.
Shit im still wondering what being a paper boy is like and I GREW UP in the U.S.
The closest I came was in biking along with my cousin and helping him out on his paper route when we were 12 and 14. Just for one morning. It's not easy to bike with heavy sacks of newspapers on your handlebars.
man this was one of those games we made into a serious party/tournament game, dont think i ever finished with every house, always at least one short
This game is one of my favorite NES games of all time.
One of my most useless abilities in life is being awesome at this game. 150,000 is an average score. If only this meant something.
The term you were looking for is isometric. That's the angle you were talking about. The game is isometric, much like Zaxxon, Congo Bongo, and Q*bert.
i remember playing this in the arcade and the cabinet had bicycle handlebars to control the guy made the game a lot of fun
I have Paperboy 2 on SNES. It's even more challenging since after the week is finished you go to an even higher-scale neighborhood with even larger houses. Not really sure where it ends though.
I played the arcade version of this at galloping ghost arcade, the cabinet has handlebars to control the paperboy pretty fun game
Yo, AVGN, wanted to say thanks for covering all those old Atari and outdated console games. They likely would've been long forgotten, if it weren't for your commentaries. Not....that I cared for them, but.....they're a form of art, and it'd be unfortunate for any art, shitty or not, to be forgotten.
never played the NES version, but as a kid I had paperboy on Original Gameboy and it was the same concept. really fun game
This game was great in the arcade, it's controller was a set of bike handlebars, however yeah, it was one of those games where you'd complain "WTF is with all this shit trying to kill me, I'm just delivering a damn paper!"
Wow. I've been playing this game since the 80s and I never realized that was a remote controlled car and not an out of control lawn mower!
Always enjoyed playing this, but I had to play it at my friend's house. It was pretty fun, even if you were just messing around.
If you press the pause button at the same time that you hit the street corner light with the newspaper, it will glitch and start dinging. Kind of sounds like a bomb countdown.
I remember playing this :)
I played the Game Boy port once when a friend brought it to school. I broke three windows on one house and the owner ran out with what I believe was a knife within that same second.
Good times.
Seeing the glow of the CRT on their faces is absolutely beautiful.
You guys HAVE to do River City Ransom that game was great
classic NES game. I love to play this every now and then and show off to how far i can get :) Best part of the game is when 3 things crash into you. lol I think my favorite obstacle to hit with a paper is the garbage cans. He's got to be throwing that paper at like 40mph to knock over a full trash can lol
I've always had the Gameboy version of Paperboy, and it's not too different. One o my favorite Midway games.
I loved this game since I played this at the arcades (chuck E Cheese). I wound up getting it for the COMMADORE 64. I still like it.
one of my favorite games of all time, thanks for showing this Mike bro :)
those odd things driving down the street crack me up they actually look like motorcycles in the arcade version
I have two copies of this game for the original Game Boy. My personal favorite thing to do is to chuck the papers through the customers' windows and yell "INSTANT DELIVERY!!!"
Used to play this on the arcade before NES. Still dope and play it on an emulator once in a while.
Used to play this on the spectrum Sinclair as a kid I loved it
I still have Paperboy 2 for my Sega Genesis. The big twists in that game? There are papers to deliver on BOTH sides of the street, and you can play as PAPERGIRL!
Papergirl is a ginger.
I saw the C64 port at my friend's. I found the game impressive. Interactive evironment - breakable windows and other stuff. Was unusual at the time.
Guys have you seen the Commodore 64 version? Looks and sounds much more polished, in fact the video made me wanna go play it in an emulator. The music also kicks a lot of ass, well sound is one the greatest features of the C64, Amiga and Commodore computers.

I used to like to break the windows... but I think that was paper boy 2
Paperboy 2 was a nightmare for me at least. would be awesome if you guys did a play through or a run at that game.
Do you guys take requests? If so then I'd like to see you guys co-op either the original Mario Bros. or Joust. Back in the day we'd get some friends over and have a blast with those games.
Gauntlet has some awesome sound effects that remind me of the lamp breaking in this game.
WOW =) That reminded me of one thing =) When are you guys gonna try out "the last ninja 1 & 2" =) Have anyone of you guys ever tried it ?
ARCADE VERSION HAD THE BIKE HANDLEBARS AS CONTROLS...MISS THAT SHIT
+aaron maxim For real.
+aaron maxim Yup, that was the best thing about this game.
aaron maxim Yup...
+aaron maxim yeah they had this game at every pizza parlor
I played this once or twice as a kid at a friend's house. I didn't know the game had a "Tuesday" feature.
Paperboy 2 on SNES is the best in the series imo.
+what? I totally agree.
I used to love playing this game as a kid
One I sadly didn't play myself. It's cool that it was the first US original NES game.
I think to this day I've still never played it
+Jake Jutras Yes, it was totally awesome in the arcade.
I played this game a lot on the megadrive, loved it.
ah I remember playing the gameboy version of this at my friend's house. I couldn't really get down which houses I was supposed to deliver papers to so I kinda just observed what people on the sidewalk were doing... and then I saw what seemed to me like a dude humping the ground or something? I was amused and confused. XD
The paperboy music is used on double dragon 2 on the third stage I think
I had this game as a kid and oh man, I was always so mad well play it...
Paperboy with an awesome baseline! xD
*****
I have no idea. xD Not familiar with his works.
I had Paperboy 2 on Gameboy and I played the hell out of it. Loved it.
Mike says nothing beats the scream in American Gladiators, but I think it's clear Mike's screaming in the Pilotwings 64 video is on par with the Wilhelm Scream.
This channel needs to involve more James and his AVGN episodes... Depending what he has in mind. :)
My Top 3 List of Paperboy Games: 2 for SNES, 1 for NES, 64 for 64.
I give that paperboy credit. After one day of all that I would have called it quits. He really is a glutton for punishment.
reminds me of being 3-4 years old and watching my older brother play.
I have Paperboy for the Game Boy, but would like to get it on NES.
I can only get as far as Thursday, sadly.
The perspective used is called "Isometric".
I had this on the saga master system back in the day
I played so much Paperboy and Paperboy 2 on gameboy, good times.
Divine Divinity RPG for PC has same perspective.
And it looks awesome. Very special and detailed.
Has there been a flawless "all subscribers served" speedrun/TAS of Paperboy? Just wondering.
I like Mike's AVGN styled look today. But without the beer and pens!
I remember the arcade the you had to peddle and had the bmx handle bars, lol
yes! I always knocked down the tombstones and broke the ball lamp. And sometimes all the windows on houses
The sound effects aren't too shabby for the time, but that music loop can be a bit grating after you've played it long enough.
I loved this game as a kid
Gotta love that scream from American gladiator
I loved this game, never finished though it was just to difficult for me.
i loved this game as a kid, but A Boy and His Blob was prob my fav!!! Have you done a review video on that one ????? xox love loz from aus (australia)
Is the lamp braking sound not the same sound as holy water in Castlevania 2 - Simon's Quest.
I had the Genesis version which I beat multiple times. Not sure if it was easier than the NES version but it just took practice to get good at.
yeah Mindscape usually made crappy games, this one was a gem but yeah tough controls...oh and the Grim Reaper just wants to read those Obituaries! haha
hey you guys are almost at 2 million subscribers!
Used to have this on my Amiga 500 with video out to a 40' TV.
RGB, I had the video out converter for the Amiga, more colours than this version, game was ace back in the day.
Im a bass player and I play the bassline to toejam and earl every day of my life. the open screen music.
One of my favorite Master System game.
