Hi I’ve been seeing a few questions in the comments and instead of typing out the same answer, I’ll answer here instead 👍 1) was the paint bad? it was insanely difficult to work with. I’m surprised I was able to create the little bee I did 🐝 but I had a great time creating it, swatching it and researching it. I learned a lot and I think this paint would be fun for anyone to make. It really blows my mind Da Vinci used this paint to create the last supper. Nuts. Gave me a new perspective. 2) i didn’t use pure pigment bc I didn’t have time to wait for it to ship and you know the yt algorithm doesn’t like that 🙈 3) If you at home would like to try this, definitely use egg yolk!
So in case someone is really interested in tempera paints: do all this at the kitchen sink. Take an egg, make a small incision on top, then dump the egg into your palm. This will separate yolk from white (white will go between your fingers into the sink). Pinch the yolk, push the contents out into a small jar, throw away the small sack like thing that's left. Now get back to empty egg shell, wash the inside under water, then fill about 3 quoters of the egg with beer or vinegar (to make the emulsion last longer), then dump it into the same jar as the yolk. Mix well. Now you have a medium to use with pigments. The emulsion with yolk and beer (vinegar) will last you a month or more. That's how we do it in art uni in Russia
2:03 - "Why in the world would you choose egg yolk?" *RAE USING THE EGG WHITE* Rae: It's not working out for some reason. *RAE SWITCHES TO YOLK LATER IN THE VIDEO*
I don't recommend acrillic gesso for egg tempera!im making my gesso with rabbit skin glue and chalk powder and it works completely different . Because im from greece we still keep those ways alive because we make many Byzantine icons and if you want i can make a video using egg tempera :) You did an awesome job Rae! Nice content as always!!! ;)
I've made egg tempering at art school! It as fun to learn how people used to make their paints on ancient times :D We used the yolks, though, and you have to remove the skin or the paint will smell like egg. We used a cheap construction grade pigment, made to color cement, but it worked really well. Also, I'd recommend adding a few drops of clove oil to prevent mold from appearing on your painting.
I'm a contemporary iconographer and use egg tempera and pigment (including the mummies heads and cow urine, yes!). You need to use pure egg yolk, no egg white and mix it half and half with white wine. The alcohol preserves it and dilutes the yolk to the right consistency. (No need for the white vinegar.) Once the tempera is made correctly it can be further thinned with water and you can have transparent water colour like washes or kept thick and its opaque like acrylic or oil. Acrylic gesso is only good for acrylic paint. Traditional gesso is made of gypsum and rabbit skin glue and absorbs the tempera into it. Your acrylic gesso is keeping the tempera floating on the surface and it probably will break and flake off over time. The beauty of egg tempera is that colours remain vibrant indefinitely and it has an "eternal" quality. Last tip, egg tempera does dry quickly but it also needs to be left to cure too. So layers need to be painted over a period of days otherwise you can reactivate lower layers and lift them right off, just as you found. Great video, love your work!
This was by far the most interesting thing I’ve seen on UA-cam in a quite a while. Rae you killed it. (You always do, but this blew me away) 👍💕👍💕👍💕👍💕👍💕👍

RAE, here in México ancient cultures used all kind of substances to make paint, such as maguey goo, grana cochinilla which is a bug that grows in cactus and actually nowadays is used in cosmetics. It may surprise you that Teotihuacan city one of the oldest Aztec cities and pyramids used to be covered in red paint made with these beetle blood and other minerals.
