This was the first video of Mark Crilley i ever watched. I was in 7th grade, and i was mesmerized. Watching this video really helped me because it made me reason Mark is both an amazing teacher, and also really funny. I've grown so much from him. I went from drawing stick figures with scoliosis, so being entered into a region wiide Art show for highschools as a freshman. ( the only one from my school, and 1 of 6 in the entire show.) I'm not meaning to brag i'm just posting this to show my appreciation, and to show those who are watching this video as a first as well. Thanks Mark!
just wanted to say im a new subscriber i always wanted to learn to draw and do it for a hobbie seeing how im trying to quit drinking alchohol. You make it very easy for someone to learn and feel like a great artist. Thank you alot much appreciated i hope you keep coming with cool ideas as you do
Hey, Mark! I started watching your videos a long time ago. I've learned so much from you. I drew this dragon and the dragon head that you drew for a class project and everyone was in awe! I made almost exact replicas of the ones you drew. I am going to try to get into an Art Institute for college. You have inspired me to start with art. Thank you, Mark. Keep up the good work!
1:55 ... this is the moment I saw it, i saw the head, and i was so happy, i could never draw dragons, but then i clicked here, and at 1:55 ... i saw it, and i smiled :) thank you :D
PS - I love that you actually say that you watch other artists work. In my experience, most artists and creatives, think that there is nobody like them and would not deign to admit to getting inspiration from others. It just make you really likeable. :)
I used your tutorial to make a Dragon Head and after months of trying on my own it came out pretty good. Now off to try the whole Dragon.Your Tutorials rock thank you so much for them.
can you do a whole video without time laps so people can learn how to do the detail and shading and lighting please. of a dragon fighting a knight with detailed background.? (MULTI PART VIDEO) PLEASE Mark
You are amazing! I am usually TERRIBLE when it comes to things like dragons, but I followed this video and it looked BOOTYFUL (for a dragon haha). Thank you so much! I'll be sure to study this video more often to learn how to draw these dragons and learn the line work. You've inspired me :)
I love how you describe the step by step in all your videos. I just wish you would do more like these. I've looked everywhere to find a way to draw a dragon breathing fire but can find ANYTHING.
I remember that awesome day in 3rd grade you came to my school and sparked my love of art. This year I graduated elementary and I still know where I was was sitting when you called on me to awnser a question about shading shadows.
Ever since I found your channel, my drawings have been getting better. Thanks Mark, you rock. By the way I go overboard with the shading.*shows black piece of paper*
I tried drawing this. Keep in mind this basically my second time trying to draw something. (outside of school) I'm open to suggestions on how to improve later drawings and such! postimg.org/image/tpnvz5kd5/
dragon's dont exist?! what?! O M G wait... did you hear that? ...................................it was the sound of my childhood getting stabbed by reality.
Mark Crilley, your my drawing idol! I am only in 6th grade, but I know what I am going t do when I grow up thanks to you! I am already working on comics of my own!
the shape of the body is pretty cool the grounded limb are nice too though the hind legs are a bit off (best way to improve those is to draw bulls, horses and pitbulls because they have some nice muscles there) the hind legs should also have talons even though he is not a wyvern and thus it is not mandatory I think he would appreciate to have those to grab preys he piques at I mean on an evolutionary point of view of course, that would clearly be an advantage. Also I don't know much on wings but their general shape, and I know there is very few shape of wings and that they are inherent to a method of flight so I doubt it is wise on a design standpoint to innovate on wings unless you really part from any realism in the matter which is not what your style seems to be telling about your art. What I meant is wrong about those wings is that it is let's say some natural consensus that the middle finger is the longest, a matter of balance I suppose, It is also the case for birds and bats. The head, I don't like it but dragon head can be virtually anything so whatever, I usually prefer a more crocodile like shape, that I believe is more realist than the stocky browed jurassic-like head that is often preferred in fantasy. As for the base of the tail and hips area, your drawing make it looks like you don't understand how the volume in this part of his body works, you should make his lower belly and base of the tail bigger so that there is enough room for those hind legs to actually be there. you should also put a cloaca on the base of the tail because without it, the tail looks to much like just a part of the belly and on face view it's just flatly round while a cloaca would give him a fiercer dinosaur look. But there is one thing that made me cringe during all the video, (you draw extremely slowly and) your line is... er.. I mean it is not pretty, You are using a pencil, you can make beautiful line effects just by playing with the slope and pressure sensitivity, but all you do is going back over your line times and times with heavy stroke and make it bland and uninteresting. But you draw very well, the stylization is nice and interesting and the front legs and shoulder area are gorgeous!
I often see myself saying "this is the wrong way". What I then tell myself is that this is what makes me an artist. I have my own interpretation and i want to illustrate that vision. Anyone who reads this, remember that your opinion is more important as your interpretation.
No offense dude but dragons bodies definitely do not have a structure like that and...I...I'm sorry to say it wouldn't be able to fly with those wings...
I got every single one of your books and it helped me a lot. I have been drawing for a long time now but you cant have to much practice. Thank you for all the thing u did for us fans and bless you for your talented gift of drawing. you are my hero and once again thank you.
I am a young artist and enjoy watching yours and other older artists work and tutorials. I have picked up some older tricks which work better than some so thank you for showing me how the simple things make a huge difference. =)
I'm guessing I did really good cause I brought it to school as a part of one of my art projects and my art teacher didn't believe me that I drew it so I either have to do the project all over again or I fail that project
Your art teacher seems like someone that judges by your past sketches or doesn't believe in improvement, so if he or she noticed a drawing you previously did and messed up on, he or she will probably think you can't improve! My recommendation is to sketch something in front of he or she to prove that you have improved! But that's just what I think, you don't have to. Me I'm just starting to learn how to draw a dragon but I have been drawing my whole life! (Which I admit is only like thirteen years!) And people still think I trace! Sorry for making you read all that!
dragons have a big connection to japanese culture, if you watched enough videos (mainly begin japanology), you notice that there are dragon ornaments on some of japan's older buildings, that's because dragons are the water spirit (irony) in their culture and having a dragon ornament on your building is believed to protect it from floods (since japan is not short on those).
hey Mark where do you get that pencil that you are using ?? It looks like a very good pencil I could use for my drawings! im also trying to draw some dragons but I still cant seem to get the realistic features you put on your dragons. I find it difficult :P with all the shading and the scales
I used to draw alot when I was younger, but got bullied out of it since people made fun of what I drew (dragons and my own fantasy creatures), but I've started drawing again and I still got that core skill to draw, but I just would like to know how do you know what shapes you use to make the central structure of your beast and whenever I do that I have to erase the lines and the residue would be left over and annoy me, but you don't erase, how are you able to hide those sketch lines for your work?
well if you're going to draw an outline / a central structure you might want to draw it very lightly, enough for you to see it but not rough enough to leave a residue when you erase it. hope this helped a bit :)
Dragons are so fun! Because you can do whatever you want with them if you know the basic structure, you can do horns, fins, wings, scales, claws etc., all however you want!
Do you have a preference in pencil OTHER than the Tichonderoga? I'm a big fan of Strathmore, but I will admit that I have been known to sell out my local stores of *Black Tichonderogas when they get them (rarely).
How do you keep from getting smudges when erasing? Is it a heavier tooth paper? Harder lead or both? I'm getting shading where I don't want it. I use an artgum or magic rub eraser usually.
Just getting back into drawing after 10 + years. Always wanted to draw a cool Real looking dragon and i finally did and it turned out great! Thank you for making these videos! ❤
Are the wings both leaning to the center top of the dragon? Just asking because usually on wings like bat, dragons, gargoyles etc, I see the edge outter spine being the longest. Would just want some definition, would really help me put. Thanks a lot.
You are AMAZING!!!!I love your work!! I had a subject in Art the other day about a Dragon and our teacher showed my class your Incredible drawing!! You've really inspired me to draw more things
I also agree on that fin-like thing on the side of the head is that (my basis are a few dragons in Monster Hunter Games) is that it's supposed to make the dragon look much larger to scare prey.
i drew this dragon, it took me FOREVER, but was totally worth it. thank you so much mark crilley.
Mark Crilley's Pencil never gets dull.
Illuminati confirmed
David Jacobs the loominarty granted him a magic pencil in exchange for his soul
I think he changed pencils at the 14:00 jump? Since it was much darker.
***** You sure? I used to use those pencils and I think he swapped.
***** It is I know but they shades look different to me.
because he dashes with his pencil.merry chrismas

I love how you describe the step by step in all your videos. I just wish you would do more like these. I've looked everywhere to find a way to draw a dragon breathing fire but can find ANYTHING.
Try searching up just how to draw fire, then maybe have it look like it's shooting out from the dragon's mouth. I hope I helped.
I just found this guy and he is incredible!
Mark: ".....They don't even exist."
Me: As far we know

markcrilley if I was going to draw the dragon, do I have to draw the rocks too or does it just help out,or just a background?
Alysssa 1337 it's just a background, but lines to tell where ur dragon is on the paper, and proportions might help!
You're such talented and because of you now i manage better the musculature, design and details of all my dragons Thanks so much Mark you rock !
"Let me just lay this pencil down." Me: "Let me just la- Holy shit! I smudged the entire drawing!"
I've wished to see a dragone and now it's in my eyes!

so cool!
I watched this when I was 12 years old now I'm 21😭❤
I wished life was much longer, so much cool stuff to learn. Drawing well would definitely be one of them. Great tutorial!
You suddenly made the dragon go from female-looking to male, then from young-looking to old fart. THIS IS WHY I HAVE ISSUES WITH DRAWING AT TIMES. XD
The tutorials are great
I picked up your book "Mastering Manga" at the Library the other day and It was amazing! Thank you for uploading videos Mr Crilley!
Hey Mark,

Actually dragons do have some connection to Japanese culture even tho it's not the same Dragon
Haha, I thought the same thing during the opening of the video. I'm pretty sure dragons played a fairly large role in their culture
yep
dragons have a big connection to japanese culture, if you watched enough videos (mainly begin japanology), you notice that there are dragon ornaments on some of japan's older buildings, that's because dragons are the water spirit (irony) in their culture and having a dragon ornament on your building is believed to protect it from floods (since japan is not short on those).

OMG!!! Your drawing is so perfect I can only perfekt anything that involves luchadors. Like Mistico,Rey,Fenix,Kalisto, ect

Just getting back into drawing after 10 + years. Always wanted to draw a cool Real looking dragon and i finally did and it turned out great! Thank you for making these videos! ❤
As usual... simply amazing, thanks for sharing Mark.
Thank you so much I used to be rubbish at drawing but you have changed it so you inspire me so keep drawing
Are the wings both leaning to the center top of the dragon? Just asking because usually on wings like bat, dragons, gargoyles etc, I see the edge outter spine being the longest. Would just want some definition, would really help me put. Thanks a lot.
My favorite "How to draw manga" channel!! Can you draw a dragon with its wings as its front legs??? Please!!!
This is brilliant for my homework! Thanks Mark!
