About this game:
RogueVania: The progressive exploration of an interconnected world, with the replayability of a rogue-lite and the adrenaline pumping threat of permadeath.
Souls-lite combat: Pattern-based bosses and minions, weapons and spells with unique gameplay. Make do with what you have and don’t forget to roll.
Nonlinear progression: Unlock new levels with every death and explore undiscovered parts of the castle as you prepare for the inevitable bosses.
Exploration: Secret rooms, hidden passages, charming landscapes. Death is the new backtracking.
Weapons with ammo work like this:
-Hit nothing, and that shot will return to you immediately.
-Hit an enemy, and that shot will return to you when that enemy dies.
That's why you weren't regenerating ammo during the elite grenadier fight, because you stuck all your knives in him.
Yep, and he can recover the ammo by parrying with the shield or using an object he hasn't unlocked yet.
I like how he has his theory, but never bothers to check it by just wasting all his ammo when he finds a new item to replace a bow
Elegost nl is a model example of the lazy scientist.
I really want a supercut of every time NL says "he's done it," "he's beginning to believe," or "he's a god," and then immediately takes a lot of damage or dies right after.
This youtube channel serves that purpose well enough.
Hey, NL. This game is amazing and you got potential to become really good at it. Here are some tips that may help you:
- First, and MOST IMPORTANT, unless you're rushing for a time door, or really low on health, there's no reason why you shouldn't explore the whole level before exiting to the next. You're missing power scrolls, weapons, skills, chests and cells. Mainly cells. To help you explore and move through the level, there are plenty teleporters. Learn to use them, it will save you time and even health, in some cases.
- Dead cells has a recovery system similar to Bloodborne. If you take damage, you can recover some of the health by inflicting damage to enemies.
- Destroy doors, don't open them. Destroying a door will stun every enemy on the other side that was close enough to that door, you'll see how usefull that is. Besides that, if you open a door, it will close automatically, which can really screw you in the heat of the combat. Destroy Doors.
- You should use your "ground stomp" more often. It does a fair amount of damage, stun enemies, and prevents you from becoming stunned when falling a long drop. Just be carefull in areas with spikes.
- Just to emphasize. Explore the map, those power scrolls you're leaving behind are the key to a sucessfull run.
I've watched a few people play Dead Cells now and not a single one of them have figured out that you need to explore the floors. Every floor has a item drop and scrolls on it, if they don't explore then they're underpowered for the next area. It creates a feedback loop where the more they miss, the more they rush, so they miss more stuff until they're eventually killed because they don't have anything.
Jordy R. Guedes it might be a better idea to tweet him because he doesn't read these often
You should try out Wanderbots. He plays the game in not frustriating to watch manner. ;)
"We need to do the proper roguelite strategy: explore and get disproportionally stronger on the first floor."
- proceeds to skip numerous power ups, weapon upgrades, shops, all while noting he can in fact use teleporters
You can duck under arrows and those poison shots from the scorpions, you don't have to roll out of it. You can also use most if not all bows in a ducking state.
maybe it's just my game, but when I hold down and use my bow my character stands before crouching and firing.
You know he's Canadian cause he opens every single door instead of just destroying them.
> Flighty and fearful "Never!"
"What was that voice that came out of me just now?"
> Confident and self-assured "Never."
"I think this is the run" is the Dead Cells equivalent of Isaac's "We found the seam"
Got this game last night with a symbolic 15% discount. Played for almost 10 hours straight. Now regret buying it with a discount, 'cause the devs deserve 150% of the price tag. Can't remember the last game that warranted saying something like that.
I volunteer as a tribute for getting it gifted as well lol
Lol well said
8:45 This guy has been playing Isaac for years, and Gungeon too, where he used to explore every room. How does he not directly assume he should be exploring the full level in Dead Cells to get everything he can. Pickups also seem a lot more important in this game than they are in Flinthook.
Hey, NL.
I love your content and you brighten my day with your videos. Thank you for everything you do, even if you miss tinted rocks.
You CAN roll through shield guys.
That "wow no!" was adorable. I love it when NL plays a game he is clearly coming to love and is still learning about and that boy wonder charm comes out. With that said, instead of being a typical smarmy commenter I just want to say your content is always the best gaming content on youtube
this is my new favorite series of NL!
I've been refreshing for hours, just to see the next episode as soon as it comes online. I mean, there is probably a schedule for this, but the refreshing of your channel gave me the short sensation of a worthwhile existence.
Hey NL, from what I've read the sooner you give up the shield and become a rollin' master the better.
Classic NL: trades a sword for throwing knives, proceeds to attack every enemy from melee range
It's almost like he's intentionally nerfing himself.
Mason Howlett "yeah let me just replace my weapon with an electric whip and jump into easily dodgeable projectiles"
One thing that I learned that might be good to know is that there is a window in which you can regain health after taking damage. When you take damage a portion of the health bar becomes orange and slowly decreases. If you attack enemies during this time you can regain some of your health back. Keep it up!
Some tips I might have:
• Make sure to explore the first to floors completely. As you said, it gives you a bit of an overbalance in the beginning, extra souls are useful and the money comes in handy too.
• Secrets can be seen by looking at the walls. It is a blue symbol. Look out for those bad boys.
• When you're about to enter a room with a door and an enemy behind it, smashing the door with your primary will stun the enemy. Meaning you will have a greater chance as you have extra specials to use on enemies a bit further away
• To avoid shots (arrows, acid) you can duck and don't have to role.
• You recover lost ammo by killing the enemy. Elites make this difficult as the ammo stays in it till it dies.
• There is more than one door one each level. Each one has new enemies and kinda like a different "story" to them. Make sure you find all the doors and the Promenade level can give off at least 40 souls at a time, considering you spend a bit off time exploring the level.
• The teleporters are there for a reason. Use them and thank me later, especially when it comes to trap areas you have to traverse twice.
To me ranged weapons > shields, specially to get rid of certain enemies which you can't get close to in certain areas, and the pesky flying enemies. Specially the ranged weapons with auto targeting. If you dodge well enough you don't need the shield IMO.
iv seen quite a few ppl say ranged> shields
Lightning whip + duel daggers = OP AF
The secrets arent that important but you are missing free stat upgrades just because you dont explore.
Mathas: Ryan, I am your father!
NL: 33:03
im addicted to this and i haven't even played it
13:35 "Never!"
Oh boy. Thank you NL, I really needed a laugh. That helped alleviate some of well. . . a little bit of everything. Today was an awful day for me, and that really did help.
NL, when you get hit, there is an orange bar that slowly depletes on your health bar; if you damage enemies while that orange bar is going down, you gain back some health, so if you get hit, don't only run away, try to get hits on enemies while doing so to refrain from dying as long as possible
honestly NL, good job on that elite enemy. This series is too good
*rolls window down*.. YOU MISSED A TINTED ROCK...
In the last run, he said "We need a better weapon", looked at the electric whip that was on the screen, and decided "nah, not gonna bother with that"
This meme will never die, will it?
HELDEN STERBST NICHT! - mercy
Shields are nice, but not if they engender passivity.
Suf YaN this reference just reminds me of a NL series we never got to see :(
hey NL, the whip targets the closest enemy so you can fight on a slightly higher or lower ground than enemies and still hit them, also the timed door closes after 3 minutes and 30 seconds (you can see your time in the bottom right above the map)
"He bodied me so hard", he says as he rolls in the direction the enemy is dashing in.
Just another tip, if you have problems with those flying enemies perched underneath platforms, do the powerdrop as soon as you go down through the platform, and if they're below you, or a single block to the side, they'll pop real good.
NL you can just roll around the shielded enemies and hit their back
*dies on the Old Sewers every time* NL: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." It literally is broke, though. It hasn't worked a single time yet.
Ryab, some advice:
1. Shields, in my experience, are bad. They just get you hit more often then not, and the extra damage from bows and other secondary weapons are much better.
2. You can roll through basically anything as long as your not at the end of the roll. The shield men, projectiles, any enemies, you can roll through them all. This is why shields are basically useless.
3.Break doors, please, they stun enemies and they don't block you when your in mid combat.
4.Always explore, even if you only turn in 15 dead cells and die on the next floor, its better than turning in none, and dying on the next floor, meaning you make no advancement.
5.Ground pound all the time, it does damage to enemies and you wont get stunned if you fall from a large distance.
follow my advice ryab and one day u will be the greatest dead cells player on the youtube.
I really hope NL gets good at this quick, i can tell its going to be super entertaining once he figures out the game
Never stop playing this game, I love watching you play it. It's so funny and keeps me on edge like when you were fighting the boss 10/10 gameplay. Love ya NL 😂😂
Please, for the love of god, don't abandon this!
yo, a couple of tips: (haven't seen thsi video but I have 20 hours so far)
You can cancel many actions with the roll and shield. So you can cancel an attack with a roll or a block, or you can cancel a block with a roll. I don't think you can cancel a roll.
You have momentum (just a bit) from actions like the smash attack, and the roll.
Momentum carries from one action to another, so you can roll-jump to get a bit further.
SUPER GOOD FOR SPEEDRUNNING:
Using the force shield (the one that gives you a little dash) gives you a very strong but short push,
if you cancel the force-block with a jump, you'll carry the momentum over to the jump. Pretty much you'll be dash-jumping like in the megaman X games.
You can also use the same shield, but instead of jumping you can roll. This will make you roll for a LONG distance, 100% safe.
Hope this helps.
The only thing missing from his fight with the Ugly Worm is NL yelling "I'm Ryan! I'm Ryan!" as he ran away from it.
13:36 It sounds like a voice clip for a boss taking damage in some late 90s video game.
NL misunderstands how a weapon works and thinks it's bad forever? This is gonna be a fun series.
JK NL I luh u
+Northerlion Ammo is associated with the number attached to an enemy. If you your ranged weapon has nine for ammo and you put four in an enemy, you will have five at your disposal UNTIL the enemy with your original four has died. It is only at that point you will get those four back.
NL, you gotta try the double swords. They're OP af!
some one tweet NL, and tell him that this isn't issac, its a metroidvania you HAVE to explore. if he leaves another great item on a level "for no reason" im gonna loose it
God this game handles difficulty so well. You can never get too much hp or be too overpowered and trust me I've seen what overpowered in this game is like. Level 5 twin daggers 1k and 1.6k damage on crit hit. I literally arrived on the ramparts and a single zombie jumped at me and took all of my 300+ hp, 30 souls and 1k twin daggers with him. ;-;
Hey NL, if you ever have enemies below you, you can use "Down + Jump Button" to do a sort of a Ground Pound to stun and damage the enemies. It's a great way to initiate fights!
Excellent 2nd run there.
As new player to this game great to learn along with you
I see you need a vegetarian option to wall chicken. Don't worry generic Dead Cells man, we got you covered. -The Devs
28:39 "I need another weapon"
Ignores electric whip up top
Arminius Silvanus He wanted to go get yet. Either he forgot...or couldn't find the entrance.
That last death physically hurt me.
*ALSO YOU MISSED A TINTED ROCK*-
**gets banned from comments by NL**
That ending scream was perfect
1. Please start using teleportation
2. Please start unlocking weapons you don't have
3. Love ya egg boy
you can duck under most projectile like arrow and those acid , as long as those projectile is not low
Welcome to "All The Wrong Choises" with Nothernlion
"That whip would be really good if we could get to it." Doesn't go get it via the obvious vine beneath it.
I desire this game greatly! Quite fun to watch but I imagine it is quite fun to play as well.
Hey NL,Look at the weapon descriptions, you had 2 synergies there (Blood Sword did more damage to burning enemies + the amulet gave u a Flaming Stomp,Ice Grenade did more damage to stunned enemies so flashbang and then ice em)
hey north the roll has like a 1~2sec cool down also i hav found the blood sword with investing in for jut 5 cells since in later areas u can get a version that posions on bleed and just double stack dot damage
Destroying doors stuns the enemies close behind it.
Hell yeah, been waiting all day
so far, Bleed + CC abilities seems kind of OP if you really get good at controlling your movement. I can see NL getting really freaking good at this game!
There is a Bloodbourn esque heal back if you attack right after getting hit to regen some HP. Also shields suck, as you saw yourself they can get defense broken by taking to many hits.
NL, any item in the screen where you spend cells that has red arrows on it is an upgrade, not an unlock.
I love this game, now binging on Isaac and this.
NL you should look around at the start of each level. a lot of areas have secrets hidden right at the start
the electric whip locks on to enemys in a 2 meter sphere, meaning you can be in air and be hitting something below you, the twin daggers are by far the best weapon for the price, always buy it.
also no reason to heal when you get to estus soup, it heals you and fills your flask
If NL would just explore the levels before leaving, he would be progressing really quickly cause he's pretty good at this game
I'm sure you realized this by now, but the reason why you didn't regenerate ammo was because you were in combat. You immediately got all the knives back once you killed the elite, but you were too busy running over to pick up the whip to notice.
Thank you to whoever commented on the last episode about the mounted turret, I just unlocked it and cheesed the hell out of the first major boss with it and ice grenades, it's truly a beautiful thing
Not sure if he figures this out in the video and I just missed it, but this game has a regain system a la Bloodborne, so after getting hit, you can regain a portion of lost health (denoted by the quickly draining yellow portion of the health bar) by hitting an enemy. Seems like they want to reward aggressive play, but in all honesty, its probably just better to learn how to dodge rather than capitalize on the regain.
pressing select on the controller opens up the full map, useful if you think you forgot to check something.
NL getting directly in front of the enemies faces when he's using throwing knives is giving me an aneurysm. I beginning to wonder if he's actually an idiot.
Isn't tab key opens up the map ? I think it really helps exploring.
NL there're secrets on the first and second floor look for them
Great video, great game!
Is this replacing Grey's Anatomy part 13?
I'm dying inside from him missing the damage upgrade he clearly could see.
i found a bug where if you block an elevator coming from above you it makes the plank dissapear, getting yourself stuck. Reloading the game put rocks like on walls instead of the plank, which also doesn't let you advance
Hey NL when the scorp shoots the green poison at u. U can simply duck (: u dont have to roll all the time
I've made the whip only mistake the other day. The entirety of the Old Sewers did not drop me a weapon and I went to the boss there. Died. It's good in certain situations, but not as a primary.
Go left at the start of the level: The promenade of the condemned there is an item there
NL, the throwing knives are supposed to act like a bow, not a sword. Stop switching your sword for a second rate damage source!
Is this replacing Hearthstone with Gan Dheesling?
Αρτέμης Ζαράνης ahhhhhh... memories...
Any guesses as to how long its going to take NL to figure out the Blood Borne healing mechanic? Also taking bets in the matter before mentioned.
Just saying, the sturdy shield is already unlocked. You grabbed it once this episode and saw one or more in shops. You're just slightly increasing it's damage at the moment.
NL you can take both the sword and the knives and it's amazing
"this door was closed 13 seconds ago" if only you used the teleport to get back out rather than run past the dungeon traps again.
Whip is so good, it's almost OP! Whip, Throwing Knives, and any grenades is pretty fucking stronk.
You can roll behind the shielded enemies! makes it way easier to fight them...
NL try to get the mini-boss(because they ARE mini bosses they actual bosses come later on)at the old sewers....y will get the ability to teleport from the little things y can rub and y will be able to find new areas to explore
they say that they're interested in making a switch version once the PC version goes gold. cant wait to have this and bloodstained on the go
A switch version? It'll be a hard wait, but I think I can do it if it means portable Dead Cells.
You can duck under projectiles and those pounce attacks
Backtrack sometimes for shops/ sections of the map you missed. I feel like you're missing out
NL, you undervalue the sword's stun locking ability
I find being aggressive is way more useful than being defensive. looking at you egg as you run up to archers...wait...then block...then attack.
@5:00 Noooo, the poison bomb is fantastic.
Learn to dodge attacks instead of blocking, try out the twin daggers, because of the crit every third strike. Also, attack the doors when enemies are on the other side, it'll stun them.
NL is that a kendrick reference? Hes so hip
If you're using a thrown weapon, there's no need to stand on top of the enemy. Give yourself more time to react if they attack.
Every time nl rolls into an enemy I lost a little bit of my soul.
