  • The Kids Salmon Fishing Day was held by Central South Island Fish & Game on Saturday the 5th of November at Loch Cameron, Twizel.
Event coordinator Hamish Stevens says, “the event was a great success.”
“After a hiatus of two years, due to covid restrictions, we were very please to hold the Kids Salmon Fishing Day once again.”
Eighty-two youngsters aged between 3 and 11 years, and their families attended and gave salmon fishing a go in a relaxed and encouraging environment.
Forty salmon and one brown trout were landed during the event.
“A massive thankyou goes out to Mt Cook Alpine Salmon, the major supporter of the event, their generosity makes the day possible,” Stevens says.
As part of Mt Cook Alpine Salmon’s philosophy of giving back to the community - more than 250 salmon were gifted for the event.
Spot prizes were generously donated by Jakes Hardware, Southern Alps Outdoors, and Meridian Energy and Kilwell Sports - all the kids went home with a prize that will be helpful while fishing like a fishing lure, rod, or sunhat.
There are still many salmon available to all sports fishing licence holders in Loch Cameron.
We encourage you to take a child or Junior angler fishing Loch Cameron over the next few weeks while this opportunity lasts.
Please be aware that only Child licence holders, aged 11 and under can fish with bait at Loch Cameron.
Junior anglers aged 12-17, and adult anglers are restricted to fly and spin methods only.
The daily bag limit is two salmon.
Please refer to the 2022-2023 sports fishing regulation guide to ensure you are legal.
If you need clarification on the regulations, feel free to contact the Fish & Game office - 03 615 8400 or email csi@fishandgame.org.nz.
One final request from Fish & Game is to please keep Loch Cameron pristine - if you are lucky enough to catch a salmon, please take all fish waste with you to dump elsewhere as Loch Cameron is a favourite swimming and picnicking spot for locals and visitors.
