Woodturning | Ebonizing and Embellishing an Ash Bowl
Вставка
- Опубліковано 17 вер 2024
- In this video I take my first crack at using ebonizing lacquer and embellishing wax. I used these on a 9-1/2"x3" white ash bowl. I did make some mistakes as you will see but I really like the result once I got the hang of it!
I learned most of this process from Wayne Clasper at Wayne the Woodturner. Check out his channel to learn a ton about various turning and coloring techniques.

Great video and nice music to accompany the film. The embellishing wax sure brings out the grain.
Thanks Kenneth! I really like the wax on ash. I appreciate you watching!
Tha is just Brilliant. Really shows off the grain too
Thank you Stav!
Thanks so much for sharing your process. I learned a lot from this video.
Thank you Joseph, I appreciate it!
Such a clever man ,who speaks so calmly
Thank you Helen, I appreciate you watching

Thank you Doug, always look forward to hearing from you! Hope things are good my friend. Thank you for watching!
Good to hear from you also Louis I hope all is well. did my envelope show up to you yet by chance my friend I mailed it last week was just curious. Hope all is well and take care from Doug
@@fleetswoodshop3339 Not yet Doug but i am watching for it!
Awesome my friend thank you please let me know if you don't get it within a week please
Nice work Lewis
Thank you David!
I really like that. Great job.
Thank you Alton, I appreciate you watching.
It’s nice to find a Canadian with turning videos. Nice job on the bowl.
Thank you, there are a few of us! I appreciate you watching!
Very nicely done
Thank you Gary, I appreciate it!
Once again a lovely project and well presented. I like that you leave the mistakes in, we all make them
Thank you Ian, I don't hide mistakes, Id rather show what went wrong so others can not repeat! Thank you for watching.
As soon as you started spraying that bowl I was amazed that it suddenly took on the appearance of a rich satin moire fabric! Kudos to you, as well, for sharing your mistakes with your subscribers. Lessons can really be driven home when we see the result of an error.
Thank you, its a full disclosure channel! Thank you for watching!
@@TheKlondikeCraftsman With each video I see I get more excited about that commissioned piece I mentioned. I should be moving out near you in a month or so, and I am hoping to have a chance to see your work in person - if you permit visitors to your shop. Can't wait to see what is next!
Lewis, you are continuing to improve and amaze!!! Great shout-out to Wayne, he is indeed a wealth of knowledge and expertise!!! Keep up the great work, my friend!!!
Thank you DD, trying to mix things up sop who knows how things are going to go! Appreciate you watching buddy!
It is such an enjoyable thing to see you explore new techniques and processes! Can't wait to seee the end result of this ash bowl!
Thank you so much!
Looks great!
Thank you Henry!
That's a beautiful effect. Some purists don't approve of colour but I think it can enhance the natural beauty of the wood. Thanks for the video.
Thank you Brenda, I think that leaving the inside natural shows the wood enough to suit me. Thank you for watching!
Beautiful bowl. Love seeing others make mistakes. Helps me learn that I'm not the only one.
Thanks Mark, keep watching there will be lots!
Very nice Lewis...no matter the little "learning curve"! And yes, Wayne does some beautiful projects!
I feel good about the next attempt Dave! Thanks for watching!
Never heard of that wax, but I sure do like the results. Stunning bowl!!!
Thanks Gayle! I appreciate you watching!
Love the way that came out Lewis! Thank you for sharing your time with us! Stay safe, Vickie
Thank you Vickie, I appreciate you watching. Say safe as well.
New sub here. Love how you leave in the mistakes. That's how we all learn. The channels that work on a project that takes the minimum amount of time and everything goes perfectly are of little use to me as a complete noob. Channels like this that leave in the "here's what went wrong, why it went wrong, and how to fix it" are the best! I'm looking forward to binge watching your library.
Thanks Karl! You will likely see lots go wrong on my channel! I appreciate you watching!
Belting job pal 👍 can't beat food old Yorkshire grit 🇬🇧💯
Thanks Karl, It is good stuff for certain. Thank you for watching!
Cant wait, stay safe & blessed from uk
It has a heartbreaking end Tony!

Nice to see you include things that don’t always work out.
Thanks Kevin. Showing people things that don't work helps as much as the things that do! Thanks for watching!
That was interesting. Thank you for inviting me round. I’ve just made a dozen oak bowls and stained each one using a different Hampshire Sheen intrinsic colour (not color 😂). I think they look nice. 🌞
Yes Ray, colour! Nice on the bowls, feel free to send pic if you like, I’d love to see them. Klondikecraftsman@hotmail.com . Thank you for watching!
Thanks for sharing. A lovely bowl with stunning grain and embellishment. 👍🏽😊
Thank you Mark, I appreciate you watching!
Amazing how good Ash looks, i love the grain. I’m not a big fan of ebonizing, BUT I do appreciate your efforts to show us what you did & how it turned out. Keep on turning. ✅👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you Mark, I appreciate you watching!
I'm not going to critique other than, really very nice.
Thanks you, I appreciate it!
Very cool
Thank you Bruce!
Lovely! Thanks so much for sharing and highlighting your small errors!
Thanks Paul! It important to keep it real! I appreciate you watching!
Very nice . Really like the the bronze effect on the black. Thanks for sharing your mistake at the end with us , some would have cut that out and missed the opportunity for others to learn what not to do as well as how to do things.
Thank you Kim, I always show the bad with the good! Thank for watching, I appreciate it!
I have a feeling everything just needed to dry a little longer. As the clear was drying the wax stopped the travel agents from escaping properly and created a void in the two meshing together. I’ve done it myself experimenting with stains a lacquer. It still turned out great 👍
Thanks Mark, My thought was that the wax would protect the lacquer but I know better now. Thank for watching!
Beautiful creation👍👍👍 . Thanks for sharing
Thank you, a little bump to get there but is was fun. Thanks for watching
Awesome job beautifully done keep turning stay safe👍👍👍👍
Thanks Radar, you be safe as well buddy!
If the hot glue taking a bit of the lacquer off is the worst thing that happened, I'd say you had a pretty good day. Nice work.
Thanks Calvin, that was the worst of it yes. Thanks for watching, I appreciate it!
Love the ebonizing, very nice contrast. Great job as usual!
Thanks Shelley, I appreciate it!
Beautiful work! Good result. Good luck!
Thank you Aleksey, I appreciate it!
Beautiful bowl! Just loved the way it turned out.
Thank you Billy, I appreciate it!
Liked the video and also how you left the problem parts to stay in the video as proof we all are human and make mistakes. Check your links in the description as two of them are no longer linked correctly. Continue on!!!
Thank you Todd! I check the links and they were good, not sure what is up there! I appreciate you watching!
Very nice. Sorry the hot glue took the finish off but you’ll fix it. You answered your own question about the waxes. Let the embellishing wax cure for a day before the high gloss. You may het some of it come off, but not nearly as much. Well done piece.
Thank Doug, good to have a few trials to overcome, keeps me grounded! I appreciate you watching Sir!
Loved how it turned out 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
Thank you J’Lyssa, it is ok for the first go around. Thank you for watching.
Beautiful that looks awesome the way you finished it grain is real nice
Thank you Rich, I appreciate it!
Lewis, lovely looking bowl, great video and thanks for sharing.
Thank you Barry, I just need to fix up my little over site there! I appreciate you watching!
That was very interesting and unique. Thank you for sharing your video.
Thank you Mark, it was fun and I’m ok with the first time results!
Love that bowl Lewis, great job brother!!👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks Bruce, I am anxious to get it fixed up and try again!
Very nice bowl . Take care Lewis.
Thank you Ahron, I appreciate you watching!
Great bowl. Martin has said in his lives that the embellishing wax contains microcrystalline wax so is suitable as a top coat.
Thanks Dave ! I actually have a new tin of micro so when i get it back into shape Ill use that. Thank you for watching!
Cool!
Thank you!
Well done. Just subbed.
Thank you Dave! welcome!
Beautiful Lewis 😁👍🏼👏
Thank you Japie!
love the way you achieved the finish, something I keep thinking of attempting, nice bowl, im sure you'll sort the glue marks out. thanks for sharing. Cheers
Thank you Graham I appreciate you watching!
You do beautiful work Lewis!
Thank you Steve, I appreciate it!
Time to invest in a vacuum chuck if you don't have one.......on my list of "To buy". Love the colors.
Thank you Scott! It is on my list! I have Cole jaws that are just a bit too small for this one. Thank you for watching!
That is extremely elegant, Louis! I have some embellishing wax and I think I'd be using it in correctly. I appreciate what you demonstrated and I need to give that a try because I think there is more that I can get out of what I have and what I have been, because I was using it wrong and probably also need more open grain species to work with.
Thanks, I believe that I should have applied the way with the lathe off as well. That would give better penetration. Thanks for watching!
If u have trouble finding mylands in the future u can thin down a brushing lacquer and have close to the same thing 👍
Thanks Brad, I have a reliable supply now thankfully! Appreciate you watching !
Excellent excellent excellent, Lewis!!! Loved this one! I’ve got some embellishing wax and need to try this out!!
Thanks Seth, I've gotten some feedback on applying the wax if you want to email me I will pass it on! Thank for watching buddy, I appreciate it!
Love the bowl Lewis...but I would have used cole jaws wrapped in take or paper towels...only because I made the same mistake....
Thanks Stuart! It was too large for my Cole jaws actually. I see a vacuum chuck in my future! Thanks for watching!
Hey Lewis, lovely looking bowl, I will pm you with a few tips n tricks
Cheers
Rob
Thanks Rob, always up for tips!
Another masterpiece love the different contrast in the wood,
I personally think you did got the effect perfectly
if you made it any darker it would have look odd,
I was very happy with the coloring and accents Martin. Just the lacquer coming off at the end wasnt cool but I will fix that! Thank you for watching!
I love your video maybe I could help you out with your finishing questions if you like nitrocellulose sanding sealer you don't need a special brand just take some lacquer thin it to the consistency that you like now you have nitrocellulose sanding sealer and it's much cheaper. And when it comes to wax wax is a finishers worst nightmare never try and use it under anything it will cause bonding problems hit me up anytime with finishing questions I am a retired finish chemist and love talking about the subject keep up the good work
I appreciate that David, I bought some Behlans vinyl sealer which, I was told, was nitrocellulose. It is very thick. I can use lacquer thinner in that as well? I appreciate you watching!
@@TheKlondikeCraftsman as long as it is nitrocellulose you can thin it all you want with lacquer thinner. Some manufacturers confuse the subject by calling their products water-based lacquer it can't be water base and lacquer it has to be one or the other if it looks like low fat milk in the can it is water base and would be thinned with water I personally do not like commercial sanding sealers they typically put stearates in them to make them sand easier and they do sand very easily the problem is the stearates create a weak link and your top coat may not Bond properly I highly recommend you just thin some nitrocellulose lacquer for your sanding sealer it's cheaper and causes Less Problems
I was amazed to see that you can actually hotglue a bowl and it doesn’t go flying! Beautiful finish, you explained it really well! Thanks. Did you use plain spray lacquer for this?
Thanks Edwin, the lacquer I used was black Rustoleum. Hot melt is pretty reliable if applied properly. Thank you for watching!
That’s a gorgeous bowl, Lewis. Too bad about the hot glue ruining the finish at the rim. I’m sure you will find a way to fix that. Take care!
Thank you Gord, It will appear in better condition soon I hope! Thank you for watching! Take care.
Great work Lewis the bowl looks awesome. Shame about the glue at the end but still a beautiful piece. Really like the grain in ash, good choice! 👍
Thank you Tim, I will (hopefully) get it fixed up! Appreciate you watching Buddy!
Love it
Thank you Gerry!
That looks really good, it's a pity about the blemishes. I hope you found a way to fix it.
Hey, the blemish was so minor that it did not affect the sale. I appreciate your watching!
Thank you for hooking me up with WS for supplies. Much appreciated, where can I find the black lacquer?
Cheers!
Glad to help Neil, Rob is a good guy. I get my black lacquer at Canadian Tire. It is Rustoleum brand. Thank you for watching.
Hey man sorry I missed the premiere! I was busy working on boiling my sap and working on my lathe tools
No worries buddy. Thanks for watching
Lewis it is a learning curve, nice bowl shame about the glue, have you thought about a set of Cole jaws ?
I do have Cole jaws Douglas but this was slightly too big for mine. I believe I will get a vacuum chuck. Thank for watching my friend, I appreciate it.
For turning off the bottoms you might want to consider making a donut chuck, some Cole jaws or a vacuum system.
Thanks Ruby, my Cole Jaws are just under size for this one. I have been working on a vacuum chuck for a bit now actually. Thank you for watching!
Great looking piece Lewis, MSS the mfg of the embellishing wax suggested to me to use microchystiline wax over the embellishing wax, instead of the high gloss
Perfect Brent, I have that as well. The can of wax lied to me! Thank for Watching!
Something I still want to try. The ash I acquired last year is still drying. Waiting is hard!
Thanks for watching Valerie! waiting is hard!!
Hi Lewis, This is the first video I have watched of yours and it certainly won't be the last. Beautiful bowl and I would love to know how you fix the hot glue marks. Looking forward to the next video and will check out you other videos as well. Take care Lewis. Cheers, Huw.
PS Have subbed and hit the bell and thanks for doing the same.
Thanks Huw, I appreciate it Sir! I have subbed more than once to your channel and for some reason I get kicked out. Back in now though! Thanks for watching!
@@TheKlondikeCraftsman Thanks for your persistence Lewis. I have had to re-subscribe to many channels where YT un subs me for some reason. Cheers, Huw
New subscriber here; found your channel through a You Tube recommendation. Just had to say this is a great video, and the piece is simply stunning! I like your filming style, and your voiceover is very informative and thorough. Plus, you have a nice, calming voice - so that's a major plus. Great background music, too; not too loud, and compliments the video. Looking forward to binging your past videos and seeing more from you! Do you have an Etsy shop or a gallery?
Thank you Lori and welcome! I do have an Etsy shop, it is under the Klondike Craftsman. Most of what I make is either commissioned or experiments, so there isn’t much on there. I should really do some more pieces for the shop. Thanks so much for watching.
As a beginner why did you leave the center in the bowl when rough turning. All I have seen was to do the inside of the bowl about 1 inch in thickness. First time I saw that finish on any wood, good job.
Hey Greg, I actually bought that, and MANY blanks all rough turned and kiln dried. They were done on a metal lathe which is way less strain on the body and much faster. The intention with leaving the center in was to make a nut dish where you either hollow out that center to make a place for a nut cracker and pick or mount one of those screw type nut crackers. Not a lot of demand for those anymore so I made a regular bowl.
Thanks for watching!
красивая тарелка.супер
Спасибо! Я ценю это!
I don't think it was the glue, but it was more the heat of the glue. Try using Cole jaws.
Possibly Robert. My cole jaws are just a bit too small for this one. Thanks for watching, I appreciate it!

Nice , kinda expected see you use a burner with your logo in bottom center of the bowl.
Thanks! I actually sign them and don’t brand. Working on maker coins. Thank you for watching.
very nice looking bowl,,stinks about the glue marks
Thanks! I’ll get it fixed up! I appreciate you watching.
That's a shame. Hope you saved what was a lovely looking ash bowl
I absolutely saved it and will repair this mishap soon! Thank you for watching!
Sorry I meant to give a thumbs up
Thank you Peter, I appreciate it!
Use a jam chuck or vacuum chuck
I prefer not to use jam chucks unless there is no other option. I do think I will get a vacuum chuck, big time saver. Thank you for watching!
I'm telling Dan Preece he can contact you about something 😊
Ok!
David, where do you purchase your identification emblems that you glue to the bottom of your turnings
Hi Norm, not sure you are commenting on the video that you meant to. My emblem is put on with a laser engraver, and I am Lewis not David haha. Thanks for watching!
Is the hot glue you used for the faceplate a special type of glue or just general purpose?
It is arrow brand and is slow setting. Which really isn’t slow. I’ll show the package in the next video I use it in. Keep an eye open! Thanks for watching!
next time I recommend you try India ink instead of paint to ebonize wood
That was actually lacquer but I may give ink a try. Thanks for watching.
If you don't hampshire sheen bronze what else can you use. Thanks
Al
Hi Al! There are other embellishing waxes. Other than an embellishing wax I don’t know how you would get the effect. Thanks for watching!
Looks great it’s a shame after all that work the glue did that
Well it learned something from it and could pass it on so some good from it I guess! Thinking a vacuum chuck is in my future! Thank you for watching!
Beautiful finish except for the oops.
Thanks Jack, I hope I can correct that!
Great videos great craftsmanship my only dislike is the music. It's a downer kind of depressing. Hope this helps your channel and by the way I subscribed so it's not all that bad. Just thought it might help. Keep on spinning
Thank PJ, believe it or not I get a ton of positive feedback about the calm music. I appreciate your opinion just the same and yes comments and thumbs up really do help the channel so thank you!
That's a bummer about the hot glue messing up the finish. Great work nonetheless!
Thank you Robert, Ill get it fixed up and show in another video. I appreciate you watching!
What did you use for the ebonizing lacquer? I must have missed that!
It is rust oleum black lacquer that Canadian tire carries. Thanks for watching!
@@TheKlondikeCraftsman The bowl came out really nice. Ash is one of my favorite woods to work with. I love the grain and it takes colour/stains very well. Have you tried using liming wax? looks pretty neat on a dark background. Looking forward to your next video.
I haven’t tried liming wax actually. I’ll check it out.
