  • Here's a tribute piece to Carl Sonny Leyland, a great friend and mentor to me, and a master of barrelhouse and boogie-woogie piano. Sonny showed me a lot about how to play the Cow Cow Davenport style in the key of Db (Slum Gullion Stomp , Atlanta Rag etc.) which this tune is inspired by.
Sonny has an inimitable style, so I am by no means trying to play like him here. But, he was on my mind as began messing around with the ideas in this tune, so it instantly felt like a tribute to him. I can't play this style without thinking of him.
    Thank you Sonny!

Ethan, this piece is great! Anyway let me tell you about your notes on the video that both "Atlanta Rag" and "Slum Gullion Stomp" are actually in key of C major and those two recordings were possibly slightly sped up. I have the published version of "Slum Gullion Stomp", transcribed by Frank Paparelli and personally approved by Davenport himself who had supervised the arrangement and that's in C major. I have fixed up recordings of both pieces played by Davenport at the correct speed, in C, and they even sound better and less mechanical and rushed up that way.

Davenport approved, eh? Well that's sure something! I think I knew Slum Gullion was actually in C, but I had never heard that about Atlanta Rag. Though the recording is pretty darn fast. Either way, though've been great studies in the learning to play in Db.
I'd be very interested to hear these speed adjusted recordings, tho! I don't think I'll ever switch out of Db for Atlanta Rag, but I certainly would for Slum Gullion!

@@EthanLeinwand Ethan, my email address is luigiranalli AT yahoo.it. If you'd like, I'd be happy to send you the score of Slum Gullion, the recording of both pieces in C (plus others, since a similar problem is also present in Alabama Strut for example). There's a proof that Atlanta Rag is in C also; I'll tell you more later...

The key is not the point ; what is important is that it is BLUES mode !

Dear luigiranalli, when you say "I have the published version of "Slum Gullion Stomp", transcribed by Frank Paparelli and personally approved by Davenport himself " do you speak of the published version 1943 by Leeds music corp (RKO, Radio city ) ?

      @@deodatdechampignac Yes, that's the version.

This piece of music reminds me of Ma Grinder. I do not know why.
