    So I've been thinking about this a bit today ( because it has bothered me in the past too that I can't find other sumo riders ) and this is what I came up with;
    Too tall for short bois
    Too soft for fat bois
    Too "young" for old bois
Too basic for tech bois/dad lads ( adv riders I'm looking at you )
Too expensive for 1st bike bois
Too high maintenance for basic bois
    Too stealable for paranoid bois
    and finally..
    ...too rare for impulse bois.
In short, if you can make it past these excuses for not owning one, you're in for one hell of a bike. *But* the bike industry also bears 90% of the blame for not producing a carb-less 400-500cc sumo without ridiculous maintenance intervals. Sure the '23 KTM enduros will be EFI, but you can bet your butt the maintenance schedules will still be garbage and it will still be a pain to jerry rig them into a sumo.
I love my SMC-R and will probably only ever own SMC-Rs/701's.
( For what it's worth; I'm old, fat, tech hungry, paranoid, not mechanically minded and bought a 690 SMC-R on an impulse before I even had a bike license. )

I'm looking at supermotos atm and they seem to hold value extremely well. Got eyes on a 2008 SMC R 690. Guy wants £4,990. What's your experience with your bikes?

@@drawnbody51 I’d say £4500 is probably about right for a 2008 ( obviously not knowing condition or mileage ), but yeah 690/701s do hold value extremely well as long as you look after them. There is literally no other platform I’d rather ride. 👍

Love 'em! I bought a CCM 644 DS with supermoto wheels to commute which is fun as the journey is via country roads thought recently, thanks to the dry conditions I've been taking it out on the Trans Euro Trail too, nearby Salisbury Plain was great fun! Hopefully will do again if it dries up by the weekend, will look to get some footage.

I like the idea of supermotos but I need to do motorway stuff relatively regularly and I cant afford to have more than one bike, which is why mid size ADV's are the compromise for me.

I stuck supermoto tyres on my BMW 650 single and toured Europe on it.

A bit heavier than your 400 but still light enough to be good fun.

Can't speak for England but in Scotland there is nowhere to take them, I love watching jake find all these abandoned road work sites, industrial sites or just taking it off road. The police will crush your bike if you take it anywhere off road here, imagine it's similar in England. Just nowhere fun to take them, might as well stick to the road bikes imo

I own a 94 Yamaha XTZ660, an 81 Yamaha Tr1 XV920, a 99' Yamaha Vmax 1200. My current favorite? My 1982 Kawasaki 440 LTD. Tiiny bike, 2 cylinders, electronic ignition, 6 speed gearbox and automatic turn signals. That was the whole list. It is extremely "flickable" in traffic, it does 90 km/h no prob and is downright frugal on the fuel. I love that thing.

I wish KTM would hurry up with the KTM 490 Duke or even 590 Duke. 700 subs to go mate! :-)
Although it is annoying clearing bugs from the front of the bikes and my visor... it is good to see them again, I felt last year and the year before were missing them a bit, hardly any bugs out in the wilds getting splatted.
I'd get a "proper" supermoto in a heartbeat if there were road legal bikes like the old Husky SM510R. I was tempted to get a Beta 480RR and convert it, but it is pretty expensive if you do the suspension and brakes properly. SWM actually make rebadged Husky SM510R's... but they don't have a great reputation for reliability or quality compared to the originals, even though they are made in the same factory the old bikes were originally made (and probably by the same workers too).

Currently on a sinnis apache 125 and for a bigger bike would like to swap to a different kind. I think it's because I want the change from a lighter, more maneuverable bike to something different. I view a supermoto as being a bike for pure fun.

Jumped on my Varadero 125 on Sunday to take some parts I sold on eBay to the customer. So much more enjoyable to do that than try to pack and dispatch front forks.
Ely to Malden in Essex by Calimoto routing. Absolutely bloody gorgeous including a dirt track to bypass a road closure. Cambridgeshire Suffolk and Essex are wonderful in early summer when the palette of foliage green is almost infinite in its range. ❤

I'd buy a KLX300SM tomorrow if Kawasaki imported them but they don't. I'm considering a WR250F and sticking slicks on it, but it's a real shame that the big manufacturers pulled all their models from the UK, so used bikes are becoming rarer and more expensive.

I've been riding on and off since the 1980's, ..... been riding continuously for the last 13 years, the last 6 years on a Yamaha WR125R enduro, ..absolutely love this bike and never been keen on sports bikes.
Being able to park this bike in all kinds of tricky places to fit it into is part of the reason I like enduro's & Supermoto's, ..you'd never get a sports bike into some of the places that I sometimes park my bike.
I used to clock up 60 miles a day commuting up till a year ago.
I've never been a speed freak and the 72 mph top speed of this bike is good enough for me, i'm in no rush to die. ;)

Wow a can of worms there to debate. Why aren’t supermoto’s more popular? For me it’s the lack of choice and cost. New ones are KTM, Husky, and they’re not cheap. Used tend to be older and then you have the problem of time to make repairs, fix problems, and keeping it in the road. They are also quite tall, and I wonder with the average age of bikers increasing, are supermoto’s too fun? There’s one to think about.

I’ve got a reiju mrt 50 sm pro I’ve done lots of work to it. Fatter tyres, changed gearing, bored it out with an ultra light airsal kit for better performance, totally de/restricted voca exhaust, also removed the oil pump and turned it into a pre- mix system, and also stuck a massive carb on it and got rid of the air box. After all that it’s an absolute beast and an absolute blast. I love supermotos as they are road bikes but also very light so you can rag them down country lanes without worry of hitting a little gravel or dirt or whatever as they are so light. Definitely recommend especially if your tall as they have a very high seat position

I get the feeling that with most motorcycle purchases, the choice of style has little to do with the empirical practicality of each bike, and far more to do with the look. Now, no offence intended to Derek at this point, but I've always thought that supermotos look far too plain (somewhere halfway between a dirt bike and a generic road bike), there's nothing about them that makes the design stand out to me. Me, I love my cruisers, big, lumpy, slow, comfortable, laid back cruisers. I've never had any interest in speed when it comes to bikes but I can appreciate that some sports bikes can look amazing, and I can acknowledge the long-distance practicality of a tourer without liking the layout of them, but I still wouldn't buy one of either class, honestly I think I'm more about the chill than about the thrill 😁.

I certainly hope you can get your hands on a GasGas 700, (or the KTM or Husky variant 😉). As a SMC-R owner I can assure you they put the “Super” in SuperMoto 🤪👍. Am good on the highways at 60+ mph for stints of about 30 miles, after that the “sail effect” of the wind blast gets a bit tiring. And yes, the KTM took the place of my DR-Z, so I do have a love, (or is that an obsession 🤔), for SuperMoto bikes !

I'd like a supermoto but there's a couple reasons I don't have one. 1- I'm on a CBT and there are very few 125 supermotos that are affordable and worth having imo. 2- even the bigger 400-700cc supermotos aren't cheap, e.g the drz they start around the £3k mark which for what is at heart a 20 year old bike imo isn't worth having. And the husky 701 and smcr are around £5k-£7k which for that price you can get imo much better bikes e.g an mt07, Duke 790 and definitely way more and probably better examples but thats what came to mind first lol.

The MT07 is a very good bike for people who like supermoto but need a bit more grunt. They are best as second bikes it is true.

Especially as the performance difference was very minor and below 50-60 was almost non existent. Even more so as their bikes combined cost less than 2/3 of mine. So even as a daily rider the adrenalines specifically with +1 tooth on the front sprocket really isn't a bad bike.

I even say at the end of the video "do not get a super moto off the back of this video" now remember I am talking about supermotos as a general type of bike and that reduces your options to just a handful. @@HippoDrones I know some who have to replace the piston every 500 to 750km, depending on how hard they have been riding.
No oil change though, as that is mixed with the gasoline of course ;)

@@Meifesto they still have gearbox oil that needs changing. They must be racing them to need a new piston at 500km... I know plenty of KTM 2t owners still on original piston and rings at well over 100hrs run time... to put that into context, my Beta 390RR has around 60 hours on the engine and 3000 miles, so a 2t enduro bike could easily be at 6000 miles before needing a new piston/rings.

Unfortunately, motorcycles are an ego boost for most people. Same reason you don't see too many scooters in north america.
