Celestion G12t-75 vs Vintage 30 shootout

- Celestion G12t-75 Vs Vintage 30 is a well known mix, maybe not as widely used as you may think but still a great combination and one worth looking in to.
The Celestion G12tt75 (T75) is more commonly known as the stock Marshall 4x12 speaker since the mid 80s. It can get a bad wrap, but we don't think it deserves that. The Celestion Vintage 30 is known by nearly all guitar players, stock in a lot of the most common guitar cabients and used on countless recordings and by countless bands.
To do this we recorded both speakers in an identical 1x12 setup, same mics, mic placements, amps and settings by re-amping the same scenario through several different styles.
We love to hear your thoughts on anything speaker related, if you've used this pair before or the individual speakers, or if you have any suggestions please get in touch.

Vintage 30s handle the brighter tones with a bit more clarity, but these are both excellent-sounding speakers
You're right there Jim, that's two great comments now ;)
People hate the T-75 cos the Internet told them to.
hahaha, I get why some people don;t get on with them but some of the stuff I read on the internet about them is nuts.
I prefer a V30 because it is darker so it doesn't get to fizzy when adding distortion and the midrange is much better especially for dropped tuned guitars.
For metal the V30 is a winner hands down, but for cleans and crunch those T75 can really hold their own better than people expect them to do.
my ears told me to so. Fizzy mid-scooped sound-like-ass 😂😂😂😂
The t -75 are more Sonic but needs a v30 or greenback to offset it imho
I know right ! How can they be in the number one selling marshall cabs , and not be good ??
I really like both of these loudspeakers. The differences may not be that noticeable on clean settings but throw some gain at them & that's where you can hear the differences. I currently own a pair of each. Both are great speakers. They are the two most popular speakers in the Celestion catalog for modern rock & metal.
That's right, cleans not really that useful for hearing speakers, especially over youtube (not in the room) but gain starts to show their individual characteristics for sure. There's not a lot of love for the T75 but I really like it too. Thanks for watching.
The Celestion G12t-75 is a great speaker that can cover many musical genres, that's why Marshall put them in hundred of thousands of cabinets and amps, which is also why it gets a bad rap lol.
The mid shaping in the G12t is divine.
Sounds like the difference is in how they handle the midrange. Both the V30 and T75 sound deep and solid, but the V30 sounds clearer in the midrange, while the T75 sounds a bit scooped, which makes it spikier. So, in this demo, I think I prefer the V30.
V30 is defenitly not clearer in the midrange, it´s just more compressed
This is my favorite speaker combo !
Great, I do love that mix too.
Another great vid. These two guys really complement each other. The V30 is very precise, middy and clear, but lacks extension, it's like a very muscular and mean macho dwarf. Works, but gets annoying after a while. Also, most say it cuts like a knife, and it does, but in a dual guitar band it does not sound that good, sounds like a weeping kid especially if the other guy has a T75. The 75 is a VERY tall yet skinny guy with huge feet: it's not muscular, and really lacks fullness and body, but covers the sun when standing in front of ya. In the dual guitar mix, with added treble and some volume kills the V30. But together,oh boy. It's a pissed of big Jim with a rusty metal bad full of nails.
This was the insight I've been searching for
Great metaphor, and spot on.
@taxo awesome review man! Cheers from Ecuador
These two speakers combined I am using for years in my cab and that is the secret ingredient to my sound ;)
They sound fantastic blended together.
I did that. Problem was that the G12T was too quiet. When you mix them, the V30's are just too loud to even hear the 75's. I got some Creamback 75's (which are 100 dB's like the V30's), and I can't even begin to describe how much better it sounds...
@@cornfilledscreamer614 I want to mix these two in my carvin 2x12
@@luizfloripa I think you'll love it. Keep in mind that both the Creamback and (most certainly) the V30 are bright speakers. It's all just a case of reducing the treble on your amp to cope, but once you do that, you'll get the sweetest mids you could ever hope to hear!
@@cornfilledscreamer614 tested this setup and the tone is simply fantastic.
@@luizfloripa Glad to hear you liked it. Pretty touch combination to beat!
This quickly and easily helped me make a decision on which Harley Benton 2 x 12 to get. Thanks!
Glad you found it useful.
I love these two but T75 is my favorite
Great. It is nice to see so much love for the T75. Thanks for watching.
The G12T75 is on all the records where I absolutely hate the sound. It is also on all the records where I absolutely love the sound. Kind of a difficult case.
Well working on the principle that it is easy to make something good sound bad then it suggest the T75 is good ;) Thanks for watching.
The ability to mic a cab for a good recording is extremely understated. It actually takes some skill to be able to capture the tone of an amp with mics as your hear it in the room.
T75s and V30s in an x-pattern sound fantastic. I personally think the better pairing is V30s and Greenbacks but both setups sound great.
3:05 V30
3:09 T75
7:27 Both
I have a Fender 2x12 cabinet that came with Celestion Vintage 30's. I took them out and put GT12T-75s in there from another cabinet and like them much better.
I have same cab with a Fender supersonic 22 head… I wasn’t happy with the honky crunch, so without much thought tried the Supersonic head through my Marshall JCM800 Quad and achieved instant enlightenment. The G12T-75s combined with Fender head instantly gave me the sound I had been chasing since the dawn of my tonal pursuits. Warm yet crystal cleans and earth shaking crunch from one hybrid rig… The Fender supersonic head with the G12T-75 Marshall Quad is transcendent in every way.
I have a Fender SuperSonic Twin 100 comes with vintage v30 speakes, swapm them with the Gt12t-75 and it rocks even more
I just discovered this combo sound last week. I got two of my 412 cabs set up with the v30 g12t-75 X-config and working on the other two cabs today. I tried V30s and Greenbacks in the same 412 cab and they were just cancelling each other out. The g12t-75 and V30 are very close on the frequency map so they survive together very well in the same cab. My test drive was a big thumbs up. This is the tone combo for me.
The v30 doesn’t drown out the g12?
@@Dixie-Normus-209 I have changed my cabs since then. I found over time the g12t75s we're too fizzy and every time I used my amp it got more annoying. I switched back to V30s and greenbacks, no more fizz, a solid strong sound. Back on this new combo for about a month and very happy with it. Turns out my previous v30 greenback combo had one Grenback speaker wired backwards. That's why it was cancelling out. Wish I didn't make that mistake the first time
I just bought a used Laney AOR straight cab and its got the old g12-t75s and they sound really good! Thanks to you though I want to get some 2x12 cab with old v30s and do a swap with a couple the the g12s in my Laney. Killer vid earned a sub like and comment.
You can definitely differentiate the two when it comes to high gain. They both sound great, with the V30s sounding more focused and almost “compressed” if you may, with the T75s sounding more open and scooped. Both are great speakers though and you can’t go wrong with either. I personally have a 4x12 cab with the T75s and I’m happy with them.
I actually have these 2 paired in my vertical 2x12. The v30 is on top while the g12 is on the bottom
El v30 no tapa el sonido del otro?? Por.los 100 db vs 97 db ??
I'm sure T75+V30 is very popular among late 80s to early 90s metal bands especially thrashers (Metallica and Megadeth come to mind). Ofc, my way of combining these speaker mix is T75 for the scoop and V30 to fill in the midrange gap.
It is most popular with those players for sure but I quite like the mix for lower gain stuff too.
I was definitely getting Megadeth vibes from the T-75
Oh my on the thrash part😮
Damn. I just put a pair of my 96' UK G12T75'S on the top together with some fairly new Vintage 30's on the bottom of my 412 cab. It's huge sounding. I am A/B'ing them with my other normal use cab with Greenbacks on the top and V30's on the bottom and it's way more fuller sounding and less shrilly. I might have to redo all my cabs. Thank God I have kept all my speakers over the years.
I don't understand all the negativity surrounding the T75, I'd imagine that it's simply a case of familiarity breeding contempt.
Yeah totally that's about it. I mean it isn't for everyone and you can easily find a speaker more suited to more people but it is a great speaker in the right place. Great comment.
On their own I can relate but as you said they like to mate with complementary.
It's a mental thing... if T-75's are "stock" then of course, they automatically need to be "upgraded" just in the same way that the pickups that come "stock" in a guitar... automatically need to be upgraded to "X" brand pickups.
@@scottdunn2178 I totally agree with you I have a Marshall 1960 cab with the t75's and was thinking about getting two different speakers for an x pattern but after watching this video I realize that I don't need to waste my money on any so called upgrades. The t75's chug like no other and have a great top end.
@@MrJam1001 One trick you might want to try is use a really long (25'+) speaker cable... it acts like an inductor and will help smooth out that high end fang the T75's can have. If you're running a 16 ohm cabinet you can use the 8 ohm tap to lose a little efficiency and smooth your tone even more. The 8 ohm tap seems to sound better than the 16 ohm tap IMO anyway but your mileage may vary. Good luck 👍🎸
I used to have this pairing in my 2x12 Silver Jubilee cab. Sounded awesome, but only when the v30 was on top, because then you would get the V30 sound with some added goodness. When the T75 was on top, it seemed you would get the worst aspects of both. But this is all so subjective anyway.
I know what you mean. I take it the cab was vertical. Was the cab angled by any chance?
@@ZillaCabs It's the 2556b and it's straight (but the baffle has a slight angle, speakers are offset). By the way, the G12T75+G1265 is the other combo I like to run it with, but with these I prefer the T75 at the bottom.
That’s only because you hear the top speaker because it’s closer to you… So you’re probably not hearing the t-75… The audience is hearing both
Even Malmsteen prefers T75! There is no doubt they sound good. A mix of course is better as the peaks of one smooth out the troughs of the other. My fav still however is a 12L,
Ok, in the back to back comparison, I slightly prefer the V30 all around (wouldn't expect myself to say so ever), sounds a bit fuller and clearer at the same time to me. But the T75 isn't bad either, not even close to its bad reputation.
Great as always to hear from you mate. I think I'm the same as you on this. Both two really cool speakers. I;d go for the V30 first too but I do love a T75.
I like the speakers mixed together!
For the clean and slightly dirty tones both sounded quite good, but for the heavier rock tones I much prefer the V30. Mixed together -- yeah, that definitely works.
I thin that's a good shout. It can sound pretty aggressive with the rockier stuff.
i love my 75. i have an older uk made one
Yeah I do really like the older ones but it is hard to know how much that is down to being broken in. I don't own any of the newer t75s that have been so well played in.
@@ZillaCabs i have seen som time ago a caomparison with uk and chinese. the uk one is more similar to g12-65 and gereenbackish. however a good speaker indeed. i prefer it over v30
I have 4 UK T75'S in one of my cabs as my wet cabinet. Great speakers. I have four other ones that I tried to sell but nobody wanted them. Was the damnedest thing considering I wasn't overpriced.. They were from my other cab that I have V30s as my dry cab..
T 75 has "the fizz" with gain- sounds exciting in the music store, you think you're loud but once the drummer his a cymbal you disapear from the mix. Vintage 30 has "the cut", youre good to go to play in a band. The newer v30s are a bit harsh but still get it done
I think that's all pretty fair to say. Thanks for the well thought out comment and thanks for watching.
Your demos are the best. Your cabs are the best!
But the sound/mixer guy is the one who is really responsible if he wants you or not to dissapear in the mix on a live stage scenario. 🤣
if you're disappearing from the mix because you have T75's there are other issues and it's not the speakers
The thing we don't know about Zilla demos is how hard these speakers are driven in relation to their maximum power.
I experimented with T100. When driven at 20-30W it sounds boxy, spikey, plasticky and overall shitty. But at >70W it's just stellar. Fast, smooth, punchy, juicy. I assume it might be similar with T75.
That's a fair comment. We probably push them at around 20 watts. The trouble is there are so many variables and we were recording over twenty speakers that we tried to be fair to as many speakers as possible. I'll say though, for most speakers, around ten watts should be enough to get them moving alright, I know there are some exceptions. Thanks for watching and its a great comment.
Yo wow thankyou so much I just asked about 12 hours ago for this video thankyou so much you guys are awesome...
No worries Jermaine, it was just luck, I had planned to put this up today. Perfect timing I guess.
@@ZillaCabs lol oh ok yea your right cause said gk100 but they both the same. Thankyou .
The mix sounds crazy good😍
I go back and forth with about every other speaker but the v30 always sounds bad to me.
I don’t care for the cleans on the T-75 tbh but distorted it’s really nice
I like this combination, the speakers are 8 or 16 Ohms?, another that could work is V30 and K100, I tried them in a 2x12 Cab, both 8 Ohms speakers and the mix is also very interesting. Good job to the people of Zilla, it is one of the few places where I can listen to a comparison of speakers with good quality and get an idea!
The differences are subtle. Us gear nerds can tell, but would the audience know the difference?
The mids sound so round on the speaker blend. It has something interesting going on though
When paired together the v30 doesn’t drown out the g12t-75? Isn’t a v30 much louder?
It is a louder speaker and it depends on what cab you have it in but the issues of sensitivity tend to be less pronounced when in the same cab as the "louder" speaker tends to reinforce the other.. also this combination is normally found in 4x12s where an X pattern is used. Thanks for watching.
@@ZillaCabs I was looking at pairing these 2 in a 1936 2x12 cab. Bad idea?
V30 for me although I think it depends on amp speaker match ,cool shred 🤘🏼 bythaway
Glad you liked it mate. Your cab is covered now by the way, just needs assembly.
@@ZillaCabs hey thanks buddy no rush take it easy 👍
The T75 has higher treble definition, which works against it with high level distortion. So the t75 sounds fizzy with high distortion, although it is more accurately reproducing the input signal. The V30 is built so that it turns that fizz signal into bite.
So I would go with a T75 for southern rock, older classic rock, jazz, blues, and pop. Anytime you get into metal territory the V30 will blow it away.
I'm thinking of pairing one with an EVM12-L to see what happens. Thanks for the video.
I really want to make a 2x12 cab with both in it 🤟
LOL sure.
@@JC-11111 never played a T75.
Though I like the T75, the V30 is the one that is obviously flatter- both on frd and in a real in person scenario.
The T75 is all steer tops and drops across the spectrum plus has a high end standalone peak pretty unnatural- that's where its suzzle comes, under distortion.
The V30 is both middy and bright, but EVENLY middy and bright- it's all about the proportions of elements of each.
I agree on the rest.
Cheers.
Hehe late. They're great!
You guys do an awesome job with these videos! How about comparing the 10-inch VT jr and Creambacks?
Thanks Jim, that's really kind of you. I've got plans for a 10 vs 12" speaker video, where we do direct comparisons and the V type jr will be in that for sure as we missed it out last time.
@@ZillaCabs Awesome! I will look forward to that!
I got both of these Speakers in two Cabs. I got a 2x12 with V30 and 4x12 with G12t`s. Would it make a big diffrence to put the v30 in the 4x12 and mix it with the G12t or does it sound the same with the 4x12 and 2x12 mixed? Great videos, keep up the good work
so any suggestions/thoughts on running these as a combo in a Horizontal 2x12 (mojotone) cab vs. just choosing and sticking with a single speaker model? thx for the video.
The thirty vintage is wow not muddy at all nowhere, sharper, brighter, and can chug really well, the 75's had their best moment with the starting clean sound it was very soft and not twangy a real modern jazz sound , together the sound was muddy again, I think the 75's are a loud speaker made for Amp Assimilations
seems perfect match to nail frusciante’s tone , mix together 2 speakers especially w/ silver jubilee… isn’t true? somewhere i read he likes combine two head and two cabinets to ballance the final output.. i think it s great idea to rise up general features
I fell like g75 has more fuller sound, has a extra high end frequencie together with the mids. Greenback is more simple sound. Maybe a EQ adjust in the head can make a g75 sound like a greenback, not 100%, but similar. But if you want pop that high end you can, Grint. I use this every time in my 4x12 with marshall head.
Depends on speaker configuration. In my 4x12 I have the vintage 30’s and the high end is really cut down so that needs to be taken into account
I wonder what this v30 with a seffield 1230 will pair like in my ultra tube 212 peavey combo
They sound great together.. always loved that combo. Sadly, neither handle the bottom-end of the 5150 well, though..
My mesa f50 has huge clean bottom and it separated thr magnet from the coil on my G12T75 without ever coming close to cranking it up
Guys, one question. How does a bigger dust cap affects the sound, and in consequence the sweet spot location in a speaker? You state in your description that you used same mike position. There is an internet myth that says the aiming where the cone meets the dust cap is where the money is. But i always wondered if because of this idea, people tend to mike speakers like the T75, way too into the cone, losing mids and the frequency content to properly work in a mix. I would love to know your take on this. Thanks!
It's a complicated thing, recording and sound engineering, everything affects anything.
You may also record totally on axis but from a larger distance from the cone, mic slanted, off axis close, away, anything, the room plays a HUGE part, as the cab and anything in the rig.
I'm running a V30 16ohm and celestion lead 80 (16) in a stack. Not a common mix. It does everything everything except metal ( cause I havent tried it) The T75 is a serious speaker would like to try them in my fender twin. Thanks for making these videos!
V30 has a little more mid-highs in respect to G12T-75. Difference is more present in player's hands than who is listening to the guitarist.
Exactly
Satriani loves the T75 .. but he can make any speaker sound great !
It's an iconic sound from that era.
Saying one is better than the other is absolutly subjective , there are so many variables in the final sound or tone you get , like your guitar then your amp tone and finally your taste or what you think is the right tone for you, I think both speakers are really good in general but each one will perform differently depending on what you are looking for, I have both in different cabinets and some days I prefer de V30s , next day I found them harsh and ear piercing with that magnified higher mids frecuency that goes above anything else , then I go back and better enjoy the 75s , hard to say what is really better , both are.
Those are exactly the types I have in my cabs 🥰
The mix or two T75s?
@@ZillaCabs 2 times X-Pattern with V30 and T75. First with the old Ipswitch in a 1960B and second with the newer ones in a 1960A. Sounds amazing. Very pleased.
Great. Do you prefer the new or old ones (although I guess the angled cab makes them sound a bit more aggressive).
Until now I preferred the old ones more. The straight cab is also additionally sealed and refurbished. So it has a bit more punch too.
I wonder how a vintage Vox cab loaded with T75s would sound with a Hiwatt DR103....vintage Hiwatt cabs with Fanes are just tough to come by these days, so I'm looking at cheaper alternatives.
I currently have 2 G12T-75s and 2 WGS retro 30s in an X pattern in a 4x12 and 2 V30s in a 2x12 cab...I am going to try and put the retro 30s in the 2x12 and put the G12T-75s and V30s in the X pattern in the 4x12 because I dig this combo here in the video and the WGS Retro 30s are a bit different....aren't speaker swaps fun 😊
How does the t75 compare to creamback h75
It's really quite a different speaker, we've done a comparison video on it, you'll hear it through a bunch of differet styles.
Guys what you think it’s better
T-75&vintage 30
T-75&greenback
For a 2x12 cab
That's a really good question, I like them both although the T75 rarely gets used with a greenback.
I gotta say I love the combo but if I was forced to pick one it would be the V30.
I know what you mean, the T75 is a cool speaker but in certain circumstances there is a quality that can be seen (or heard) as slightly harsh, and the V30 has less of that.
Their better together than separate.
I really like these two mixed together as well, they have some really useful aspects to them. Glad you like them.
@@ZillaCabs I have 2 of each in a 1960a cabinet but in an X pattern. Wonder if I should try the V30s on top and the T75 on bottom like I keep reading in the comments here...
Hey, these speakers have always sounded very different to me but i dont play in a band much, probably wouldnt hear much difference in a band. To me the v30 is superior in all respects.
is there a way to eliminate the fizz im hearing from the G12t-75? or is that just because they are a clearer speaker?
pull it down between around 2-2.5k and that should help a little... but its a fairly aggressive speaker./
01:22 this silence was really usefull for the comparison 😅
You can her how the notes ring out ;)
Guess I just prefer the V30's...
mix 30/75 best of both worlds, every (marshall) cab sounds so much better
I'm with you there. I think they should mix those two as standard for sure.
I actually prefer the T75
It's a really cool speaker. Thanks for watching.
75 has more mids which makes it sound more gummy-boomy. V30 is cleaner, both good, sound very similar.
Cleaner, dont think so. The 75 is much cleaner while the v30 are moore compressed in the mids
V30 is not cleaner, moore defenition i the 75´s
which mics did you use?
Neo V type next please 🙏
Yeah its on its way. We're doing a few videos on it.
Ok, g12 75 speakers are pretty dead sounding until you push them so crap for recording at lower levels but brilliant for stage use, v30 speakers sound similar at low volume and when pushed so I can understand why people depend on them.
Ironic that the Vintage 30 was commissioned specifically for Marshall’s 4001 Studio 15 combo, introduced in 1986. I have one, and can say unequivocally that the V30 is NOT a good match for them.
The 30,s sound better on the dirty tones but not much difference on the cleaner stuff
Can see why engineers prefer the V-30, definitely more in your face in a recording
I guess it depends what you are doing but for sure the V30 is easier on the ear for a hell of a lot of styles.
Ace video! Seriously considering pairing a 1936 Vintage with my current standard 1936 for my JVM 410 (with the V30 cab on top)! I love the sound I get from the t75 cab BUT I find it can sound a tad muddy in the higher reaches (gain @ 10 o'clock +) of the OD channels and lacks a bit of top-end definition on the crunch channel without literally diming the Treble. Although if I sit on the floor directly in front of the speakers (which hurts after a while 😂) it's much clearer. Anyway has anyone tried this config and if yes, what are your thoughts? Cheers 😁
Legends
us or the speakers ;) only joking, the T75 is a great speaker, not for everyone but still a great speaker. Thanks for watching.
The t-75 and the marshall branded g-12v have one thing in common. They come stock in marshall cabnets. Anything stock is no good in basement/ bedroom land. Both of those speakers are the disliked for that reason. It's pathetic.
I think both have their good and bad points but I have to agree, there's a lot of hate for the basic fact that they are popular. Thanks for watching.
@herbmaloid8752 So what would you recommend?
I got them mixed in a laboga alligator combo
Great. They do really well in those boutique amps.
This video made me not hate the T75
I'm glad it softened the edges a bit for you. We're going to be releasing a few more videos soon on the T75, trying to show it in a slightly different light.
They sound extremely similar, t-75 sounds fuller
Absolutely!
T-75 and V30 are the exact opposite. One is mid scooped. The other is mid boosted.
I wouldn't say they were exact opposites, they still retain certain characteristics but the mid ranges do differ for sure.
Only to a cork sniffer are these speakers opposite from eachother
@@CoomerGremlinDGGfan Says the cork sniffer who came here to watch a cork sniffer video.
V30 sounds more modern, T75 sounds more vintage (ironically)
haha yeah that's a good shout. The T75 doesn't get much love these days but I love it, especially for lower gain vintage vibes.
@@ZillaCabs that's where it shines!
i think the problem of th g12t75 is that its made in china the good metal records had the uk version
I don't think it is where it is made that makes the difference. The new modern G12t-75 sounds great..... sure I do prefer the old speakers but they've had years of playing behind them and you can still buy the old ones really cheap. Thanks for watching.
damn soon as you get into distortion that t-75 sounds.... wrong
Not a big fan of the T75.
It sounds like Danish Pete from Andertons is playing :P
A few years before I changed from a Marshall 1960 lead cabinet to two 1936V Cabinets running a stereo rig. It was for for transport reasons - that's when I begun to get unhappy with my rig! First of all I discovered that even near microphoning in the Studio can't make a 2x12 Cabinet sound as good as a 4x12 one and than the switch to Vintage 30 Speakers made me nuts! I tried a mix between T75 and V30 - never got happy again with my sound until i got rid of both - the V30 Speakers and the 2x12 Cabinets! These V30 Speakers are a pain in the ass for me - these fuzzy, raspy mids ruin the overalll sound of everything you put through them! I never got why they went so popular? I have a theory that it begun with the down-tuning hype...
If you don't have anything nice to say about something, don't say anything at all... except when it's about the G12T-75! Man, I hate that turd with a membrane with a passion!
hahahaha, this is the kind of comment that made me do the videos.... but at least yours was funny hahaha, I can see why you'd not like it for sure.

The G12 T-75 are horrendous!
