  • Recently, I have been asked by a lot of friends and family members for the recipe for my Bean Burgers. So instead of just posting a recipe I thought that it would be more helpful to take a full video of exactly how I make my Bean Burgers so that they are just as delicious and grill ready as the originals!
I hope your bean burger making experience goes great! If you want to connect with me on social media and let me know how your burgers turned out I can be found here:
    Facebook: / theplantbasedgabriel
    Instagram: / plantbasedgabriel
    Twitter: / plantbasedgabe
    Here's the recipe!
Gabriel’s Famous Burgers (Vegan & Oil Free & Grillable)
    Ingredients:
    - 3 cans of salt free black beans (rinsed & drained)
    - 1 can of salt free red kidney beans (rinsed & drained)
    - 1 cup of cooked brown rice
    - 1 cup of raw quick oats
    - 1/4th cup of sauce/liquid ( • Easy InstantPot BBQ Sa... )
    - 1/4th cup vital wheat gluten (Substitute oat flour for a GF option: • How To Make Oat Flour ... )
    - 1 tsp liquid smoke
    - 1 tsp pepper
    - 1 tsp garlic powder
    - 1 tsp onion powder
    - 1 tsp paprika
    -KitchenAid Stand Mixer (amzn.to/2MOYZYZ)
    Instructions
    1. If you have a KitchenAid with a scraper paddle, it makes it easier, but I have also mixed it by hand many times.
    2. Add the beans to the bowl and mix them until they are the consistency of refried bean.
    3. Add the rest of the ingredients to the bowl and mix on low until everything comes together. At this point, you should be able to easily form balls that stay together.
    4. Form the balls into patties and freeze the burgers for a couple hours before putting them on the grill. This helps prevent them from drying out.
    5. Get the grill hot and put the frozen burgers on the grill for around 3 minutes a side. (I normally wait until they no longer stick and then flip them.)
I normally double or triple the recipe and then freeze burgers for a later date.
    Enjoy!
Head over to my website for the complete step by step written instructions!

Gabriel, Thank you so much! For those of you who like nutrition facts, I thought I'd share. The only change I made to the recipe was to replace the Wheat Gluten with a tablespoon of flaxmeal and water. I used a 1/3 cup measure and got 12 patties. Each patty has 187 calories 7 grams of fiber and 9.6 grams of protein. That's fantastic! This recipe is definitely a keeper.

Glad to see that you subbed the wheat gluten. I was wondering if anyone else had tried to replace it. Definitely going to give this another shot and add the flax meal water mixture.

Love the bean burgers! Just watched you on Chef AJ and am hooked on both of you. Read FOK books and China Study two years ago and did real well for a year but started using too many whole wheat flour products and the 15 pounds returned. Just ordered your book for beginners and can’t wait to get fully onboard again. You’re an inspiration!

Gabriel, I am 54 and not very active due to multiple back fractures and other health conditions. I started learning about and incorporating plant based diet about 8 weeks ago or so. I saw your interview with chef AJ and I am so happy that I found your book Plant based diet for beginners (Amazing!) I enjoy listening to your videos. I have lost 17 pounds eating simple starchy staples lots of fruit and vegetables! I found that my diet is even more satisfying. I cook these burgers straight from the air fryer and they are delicious! Thank you for everything that you are adding to this community. 💕

I make this every week now. It’s SO convenient to have them frozen to use throughout the week. One batch makes 18 burgers in 1/3 Cup size burgers. I just double the spices. They heat up well on the stovetop and in our Breville Air Fryer. Thank you! Yes, the freezing is key! I’ve been making bean burgers for years. None are this good and as easy to make.

These actually work! The reason I sound surprised is that most bean burger recipes taste like mush. The bbq sauce and liquid smoke draw all the flavors together. And when properly grilled, the crusty outside with the texture inside go well with your favorite condiments.

Well, I just made them and they were ok. Needs more flavor, I may double the amount of seasoning. I still really enjoyed it.

I'm from Texas, so I more used to strong flavors.

    • @PlantBasedGabriel

Yes, definitely go ahead and add some more seasoning. I do not add any salt in my recipes because we always use a sauce on the burgers, but adding some would definitely give some more flavor for you.

Am curious on the measurements of the burger press. Would you be able to measure the size of each patty after it has been pressed (length/width of the square ones and diameter of round ones)? I had 3D printed some awhile back and use with parchment paper, but they make very large patties which I don't mind, but would like to make some smaller ones for when making burgers for a potluck or BBQ. I've made the smaller ones based on the size of the beyond burger and impossible burger which are both 113 g on the package. The large burgers I was making were 190 g for reference.

    • @PlantBasedGabriel
      @PlantBasedGabriel  6 років тому

You definitely could! I haven't just because I try to keep the recipe as simple as possible. I would think that you would want to make sure the veggies didnt have much water in them and you should be fine without adding any more gluten.

    • @PlantBasedGabriel
      @PlantBasedGabriel  6 років тому

jnooe99 the measurements are teaspoons. I have found that those amounts give the burgers the most authentic flavor. Definitely give them a try and then if you prefer more or less of a seasoning you can adjust the recipe.

Can these be pan fried or baked? Would you defrost first?

Susanna Ball I haven’t made them on a pan, but I have baked them and done them in an air fryer. I would just make sure your oven or pan is hot before putting them on.

Can a food processor be used?

I would recommend blitzing the beans in the food processor and then mixing the rest of the ingredients by hand in a large bowl. I have done it that way many times and it turns out great.

Great recipe. however, you need to use organic oats, and organic flour, so that you are not using GMO products. Also, wheat gluten can’t be eaten by a number of people. A good substitute is to use (1) Tbsp flax or chia seeds in (3) Tbsp. Water. The seeds need to be ground first. Then let it set for 10 minutes and then you have the equivalent of one egg, For this recipe, you may nee 2 eggs, which is 1/4 cup water to 2 Tbsp. Ground flaxseeds.Let set 10 minutes. Also, when you make cornbread, be sure the cornmeal (or corn flour) is organic, or it too will be a GMO product, which is very bad for your health.

Please note @Bettymon, this was a recipe he posted because so many wanted the recipe…if he made all those substitutes it wouldn’t be the recipe people asked for! I hate it when people give me a different recipe than what I asked for! it’s a waste of time for me… Maybe you could consider modifying for your own preferences and Share with the group for those who might be interested in your choices.

    Dude
At know point did you say to rinse and drain the beans which you did on a separate video. As you probably know it is critical to the success of the burger format. Instead of eating burgers I am eating meatloaf:(

OK, I don't get it! All the rave reviews about how these burgers are not mushy inside? I followed the recipe exactly and mine were so mushy they could not be flipped on the BBQ. Horrible! Might as well have been refried beans on the grill! Total disapointment
