Oh Maria, What a wonderful instructive video ! Probably the best that I have ever seen, breaking it down into starting thoughts and categories of lifestyle needs . It has never occurred to me to set limits on the number of garments and therefore total outfit possibilities, despite seeing other vlogs showing garment number limits. However, after moving into smaller quarters with a much smaller closet last year, that has become more of a concern. Being bottom heavy, I have traditionally started a capsule with the purchase of a neutral pant. As a “warmie”, I choose a beige in the Summer and a brown in the Winter, and then find tops and toppers in those same colors to provide both an outer and an inside column. Accent colors follow after that . I love the idea of starting with a print, but my wardrobe shows a dearth of prints, as the right scale of pattern, and the level of contrast with my own coloring, as well as finding my favorite colors has proven to be quite a challenge ! As a warm colored person, I have found that certain colors in my range of colors are only offered on the market every few years, so yes, patience is the keyword here ! I noticed that the two olive green garments that you showed were not exact matches to one another in value. Perhaps that has been my shopping limited mindset, that a color has to be an exact match top and bottom. Could you elaborate on tonal dressing , showing outfits with a given hue, but with tonal variations in value ? I recently realized that I have the following lifestyle level of clothes , starting with the seasonal most worn out : 1. Gardening and “ get dirty’ clothes 2. Stay at home more heavily worn out clothes ( wishing I had more of those right now) 3. Casual “leave the house clothes” , which are the majority of my wardrobe and are remaining packed away for now and/ or hanging in another closet, waiting for the light of day once again 4. Dressier clothes for church and special occasions I don’t have a smart phone, so what can you recommend for color matching when shopping to find more garments in a given color ? Paint Chips or crochet yarn ? I’m a matchy matchy person, and again, that has affected my purchases. I end up with multiple purchases, purchased at separate times, trying to exact color match a top and topper , but find that one of them is a bit off of an exact match and doesn’t look right worn together. I tend to wear toppers year round , cardigans or jackets in the cold months and shirts as jackets in warm weather, so color pairing the top and topper is important to me. That’s why I am now inquiring into using the concept for of tonal variations instead. Sorry for the “ tome”, but your information has made my day , as my distraction during this stay-at-home time has been to dive happily into color and outfit creation, one of my very favorite things to do - so much fun! Thank you again for this brilliant explanation of how to start and continue a capsule wardrobe -- with color ! I shall be repeat watching this video, as I also do with your other releases !
I’m working on Seasons to upgrade my wardrobe . I dress mostly smart casual so fixing that first . 😊 I think the 3 x 3 means everything will team up with at least 3 other items , of course more as well . I like this idea as you get food wear out of your pieces 💞
Hi Maria, Found your channel about 9 days ago and I am addicted, I can't stop watching and in some instances re-watching. I love your approach and explanation to the principles of capsule dressing, So much great information and examples of outfits. You made my day when I saw the date on this video. Keep them coming. Thank you for sharing.
I also like to update my basics when I need new ones. For example, instead of buying the same short-sleeve v-neck t-shirts, I recently got some more current square-neck, ribbed, elbow-length sleeved ones in my core colors. They look much fresher, and make me feel more current, but they are classic enough to wear for years.
Great video, maria, as usual! Very good tips on thinking about how many outfits are required (i've never thought about that!) and perhaps taking a few seasons to find the right piece. I've never had a wardrobe plan before so have never thought about buying a specific item up until now. Very helpful - i'm going to try and come up with a style formula
Maria, Another example of the varied tonal look that I have seen you do in another video was when you used the bold patterned trouser in the navy , olive and white zig zag pattern, and paired it with the light lime green top and then the darker lime green cardigan, which looked wonderful, but would not have occurred to me, as I would have expected to exact color match the darker olive looking green in the bottom print to be worn in the top and topper, which would have been a bit dull. I like what you did so much better ! Again, it would be appreciated if you would show more examples of this concept ! For my purposes I would need a tremendously much smaller print to wear on my larger bottom half, but I am hoping to find a multi colored flowy skirt for Summer, and then pick out colors in the print to wear on top .Thanks so very much !
Thank you Karen, unfortunately I have just done a search and they don't seem to do it any more but it was Italian Summer by Laura Mercier, if you ask they may have a similar shade but it was a rick red but quite soft. :)
Sherry I would usually choose at least 3 items of an accent colour, but you can also have 3 accent colours and just one neutral or 3 accents and 2 neutrals it really depends on your preference. I would also say that if it is for a formal business capsule you would want at least 2 neutrals. :)
I love your channel! Have a question though... what are your feelings about leggings? They seem to be popular but I find they don’t look good on most people and even with the long tops , don’t hide my fat rolls. Looking to ditch them all LOL
Great tips. However, I have a disagreement on one of your points. Warm and cool colours can't be interchanged. As a soft warm Spring I am not supposed to wear cool colours. I do adore that blouse but I would need to make sure that it is my warm shade ivory. No whites for me.
Thank you for your comment Sherry. I think you can mix warm and cool if they aren’t too far in one direction although I have seen a warm orange and bright fuchsia mixed successfully in a print and prints are where you will often find colours that are opposite mixed. I have a different method of colour analysis as I don’t believe the seasonal approach works for most people - I did a video about why 😀 - however many moons ago when I did use the seasonal approach Spring’s characteristics are bright and warm so I think someone has misled you, soft and warm would have been Autumn. This is the problem I have with the seasons being restrictive. I also think that despite what suits you physically you need to include your personality (see this weeks video) and wear colours you love as well. I don’t believe in shoulds or shouldn’ts it’s your body after all 😀
You look fabulous
Really great stuff 👍🏻🥰thanks
So many great ideas! Happy to find a channel that isn't geared toward young bone thin women!
Thank you 😊 no that’s definitely not me 😂
Easy to understand, uncomplicated capsule wardrobe video. Thank you.
Thank you Wanda, I am so pleased you enjoyed it :)

Fab lipstick. Can you share what it is? Thanks

Maria,
Did you mean to choose three different accent colors within a capsule, or choose three items of a given accent color, or both ?
Sherry I would usually choose at least 3 items of an accent colour, but you can also have 3 accent colours and just one neutral or 3 accents and 2 neutrals it really depends on your preference. I would also say that if it is for a formal business capsule you would want at least 2 neutrals. :)
