  • Опубліковано 18 кві 2023
  • Here's the complete broadcast of a first-run episode - the first regular one, in fact - of the short-lived Gemini Man, "Smithereens" (S01E1), as aired on the NBC Network via its Boston, MA then-affiliate WBZ Channel 4 (today a CBS-owned station). (The pilot for this ultimately 12-episode show was broadcast on May 10th 1976.)
Ben Murphy played the title role, a man who has a watch that makes him invisible if pressed, but can only be invisible 15 minutes at a time or else he will vanish forever; also co-starred Katherine Crawford and William Sylvester. This episode - involving the transport of very dangerous fuel - featured among the guest stars Jim Stafford (of "Spiders and Snakes" and "My Girl Bill" fame).
A mini-bonus will follow. Also of significance, later on that night, the first of three Presidential debates between Gerald R. Ford and Jimmy Carter would be held.
😄 Fuzzy's Note: I would be remiss if I did not also mention that this episode of Gemini Man comprises a good portion of my favorite Mystery Science Theatre 3000 episode of all time - "Riding with Death". Check it out after watching this - its hilarious! 😄 • MST3k 814 - Riding wit...

The Gemini Man was another attempt by NBC to do another invisible man. Ben Murphy appeared in another NBC TV series, The Name of the Game. He had a recurring role as an investigative reporter named Joe Stemple.

Joe *Sample,* actually. Same name as a member of a well-known jazz group, The Crusaders. Only appeared among the 26 episodes Robert Stack starred in - and those 26 were the only episodes Stack ever did (he never appeared in a Gene Barry or Tony Franciosa segment). Incidentally, that show was also produced by Universal TV as this one was.

The series wasn't bad, but it's very rare that anyone actually counts the minutes Sam remains invisible, and that is a major part of the setup. But the 50s British Invisible Man was so much better - the identity of the actor playing the Invisible Man was kept secret for almost 20 years.

I've always thought there wasn't much point in a watch display to tell him how much invisibility time he had left that day when he couldn't see the watch while he was invisible. And did that automatically reset to 15 minutes at midnight every night? 1970s sci-fi wasn't the most logical.

In the years before UA-cam, I was collecting old shows on VHS tapes. I think I had some dealings with "the other guy" (who was a collector) when I was looking for some old local Chicago television stuff. At some point, I learned of Fuzzy Memories and the person behind the site. He was doing on a grander scale what I was trying to do for myself- rebuild some "comfort food" memories of better times though old tv shows. I remember later sending him a couple of VHS tapes I had found at a thrift store to be added to his Fuzzy Memories website. I think maybe somewhere within dealing with both men, I personally formed some kind of an impression about "the other guy" that seems to line up with your comment.
