      Thanks, mate! I've subscribed to your channel. Interesting to see fig growing in Australia. Do you have wasp in your area?

      @@backyardfigs Thank you :)! Yes it is interesting indeed. The Fig Community in Australia is nowhere as big as USA or Europe, and so the inventory follows. But it is starting to grow and I have seen some interesting varieties pop up on the market here. I live in Zone 10a, and we do indeed have the fig wasp. The climate in Melbourne is very similar to that of West USA (specifically California) The quality of figs is very very good. I would like to get my hands on Unk Pastiliere in the future. I am only recent to this hobby, and started in 2021 with rooting figs and etc. Your channel is very good, I have enjoyed as others have. Please continue to upload as it entertains. Take care! Dimitrios.

    You' ve accomplished beautiful trees from your work and endeavors !. I am curious what your technique is for establishing such straight central leaders from your cuttings. Would you please explain your method briefly. You have mentioned you have bonsai experience. You should be proud of your accomplishments !Thank You

      Thank you. Some of the earlier videos show my work with young seedling trees. I like using both bamboo stakes and bonsai wire to train trees. This year I will propagate cuttings ( was too busy the previous one), and will make videos on training young trees started from cuttings. Thank you for suggestion.

    Looking forward to seeing your results this spring and summer. Specifically any challenges you have transitioning them outside. I am in zone 6 here in northwest Ohio and exploring methods to extend the growing season. Also assuming you will not be shuffling these since that would be a huge chore. Thank you for sharing your fig journey!

    • @backyardfigs
      @backyardfigs  Рік тому

      Thank you for watching. There is no common shuffling with this method. Trees are taken outside in May in shaded area for about two weeks, and then to their final spot in orchard for the rest of the season.

    Thank you for that great video!! I can see you've really been hit hard by the fig bug, like so many of us. That has to be one of the nicest grow rooms I've seen. Very nice size for all of your 60+ potted trees. The foil almost makes it look like a NASA research facility. I have a couple of questions - Are the lights on a timer and for how many hours in a 24 hour period do you leave them on? Also - you have very nice scaffolding on your trees. Did you prune them for that? I can see that you put a lot of hard work and thought into your project. Very interesting and a great job. I'm looking forward to your next video on this project. Thanks !

    • @backyardfigs
      @backyardfigs  Рік тому

      Thank you for the kind words. My plan is to complete pruning tomorrow, and the lights will be turned on, on a timer. First week around 10 hours, than gradually increased, maybe 1 hour per week. up to 16-18 hours, depending on my observations of their growth. I will make regular updates, so you can follow their progress. As for as for my trees scaffolding, pruning and training trees is for me as enjoyable as eating the perfectly ripen fig. My motto is that a correctly pruned tree is productive tree, and so I give a lot of attention to that part of fig growing.

    Wow so you start your earliest varieties in mid January? If I understand correctly, that’s great. I’m in zone 4-5 and I will start my black Madeira in mid February but I might change that in the future to mid January too if it works for you.

      My trees were root pruned and up potted, so that will slow them down a little bit. I will post new videos every week, to show their growth progress.

      Hi, I will make a video explaining in details, currently watering every three days, since the media got well saturated. That could change soon, plants are growing vigorously now. Thank you for the question.

    Hi, when exactly do you start your growing season? Did you say the beginning of May? Sorry if I missed it. I'm from Canada and trying to figure out how much of a head start I need to have my figs ripen. My last frost is May 24. Thanks for the video! 👍

      Hi, I will complete pruning tomorrow, and by turning lights on, my season will begin. Your timing can differ depending on fig varieties ( late or early), also your location. Based on your past results (unless you are new to fig growing), you can calculate and extend your season. For example, Hardy Chicago may need only one month of a head start to ripen in July, but Black Madeira may need two + months. Mind you, I am not guaranteeing this method, and don't want to recommend it until the transition to outdoor is complete in May. I also am willing to take a risk of possibly giving my trees too much of a head start.

    Question! I’m assuming you had to start from cuttings. When do you start training trees or getting wood or pole in without damaging roots?
    Do you ripen figs and brebas?
    Temperature these are in? What lights do you use?
    When do you take them out if you head start them here

    • @backyardfigs
      @backyardfigs  Рік тому

      Hi. Many of my trees were purchased as rooted cuttings, and I would start training right away. The sooner, the easier . In the beginning, I would use a small bamboo carefully placed into soil, and sometimes the roots will get damaged, although temporarily. These days I place bamboo stake to the visible roots. I did post a video on training young plants.
      I am not interested in growing figs for breba crop, most of the breba will be removed, except on BM types, since it was suggested that they could drop, so I want to confirm that.
      Temperature with lights is around 69F, during night around 58F . Humidity currently 50%. I already posted a video, with lights used in the description.
      Depending on the weather, trees will be taken outside in the first or second week of May, to avoid late frost.

    • @Justin-zz2yo
      @Justin-zz2yo Рік тому

      Got it. Since it’s rooted cuttings I guess I have to be careful a bit. Until I up pot this season the. I probably stake it at the outer rim to avoid damage

    When I grew figs under lights and then took them outside in the Spring, they all lost their leaves.

    • @backyardfigs
      @backyardfigs  Рік тому +1

      Hi. I assume that you didn't protect them enough from the sun. The easiest way would be placing them in the shade of the house or similar structure, even tall trees if they have leaves. Or, you can shuffle them from outside on full sun and bringing them indoor, for first two weeks, first time no more than 5-10 min under sun, and gradually increasing the exposure. Choosing the correct day/s when is cloudy and rainy is a perfect scenario. I will post video of my trees protection with shade cloth.

    I have had seven different cultivars in my yard, some for 10 years. They grow from the crown as we occasionally experience temperatures of -10 F. They grow strongly in the late spring from the crown, but do not produce fruit. I am wondering if fertilizing more heavily will help. They start growing in early May and the season lasts until the end of September. Do you have any suggestions? My potted figs provide an abundance of fruits as I am able to take them into a non-heated space in the winter.
