I love Robson's singing! He may not have a beautiful voice but nobody can convey the meaning and the emotion better than seen here. And I don't just mean his acting - he sings bloody well. It's theater, people, not a recital of bel canto arias.
Indeed! His timbre is unconventional but what an actor and musical performer! I finally bought this DVD after seeing excerpts on UA-cam for years. I couldn't take my eyes or ears off Robson any time he was on stage. Arsamene's lament arias were especially moving.

Robson is a fantastic countertenor, is not one of my favorite countertenors, but is really good, and more in this role
I saw this performance at the ENO, fantastic! But Xerxes was my compatriot Katharina Karnéus and I have to say, she was even better.
