Juan Rigby as Amastris in Handel's Xerxes ENO 1988 And can he spurn a princess...Vengeance on him who spurns me As you betray me I'm the cause of my ruin
Wow, I'm absolutely thrilled to see these videos. I have very fond memories of Jean Rigby from our very first day at infant school when we were 5. I was very upset and I remember our teacher, Mrs Rushton, consoling me by sitting me next to Jean as we had the same first names. I was Jean Allen, it would be amazing to see her again.
@hillevifan I Agree with you!! I don't get tired of listening/seeing this rendition, her breath control is amazing, beautiful voice and very expressive!
I saw a revival of this excellent ENO production in 1992 in London. Jean Rigby brought the house down with these arias! Since that night I have been a fan of Miss Rigby's and have nothing but respect for her great artistry.
vcaus So did I, twice, with Jean Rigby, Ann Murray, Valerie Masterson, Leslie Garrett and Christopher Robson. Fantastic performance and a lesson to opera directors now.
Jean has always had an amazing voice I became a fan first when we were both studying at the Royal Academy It's great to see that she has just gone from strength to strength You should see her as Nancy in Britten's Albert Herring !!
Thank you so much for sharing. A pleasure to listen to and to watch. Does anyone remember her in a televised Matthew Passion in about Easter 1994 with Hermann Prey as the Christus?
Oh wow - this brings back memories. I used to work at the ENO and I loved Jean Rigby. I think it was the following year that she was in The Return of Ulysses, 7 months pregnant (What did Penelope get up to last summer?...lol!) Seeing Chris Booth-Jones in the 2nd clip (5:22) was a bonus, as we were quite good friends!

Still by far the best Amastris. 'Come slay me'.
I was lucky enough to be at the actual performance this was recorded - a great night and her performance was amazing.
So was I. It really was one of the best evenings of opera I've ever experienced. Jean was brilliant, but Ann Murray really held the show for me.
Excellent!! Thanx for sharing it!
