Maybe a mode where the bigger the fruit, the lighter it is so cherries and strawberries would just carve through and plummet to the bottom while pushing everything out of the way
As someone who's made a circle stacking physics prototype in pico-8 before this is really difficult to actually get running at decent performance for more than 10 circles. All the bouncing is probably necessary to be able to get this running at more than 5 FPS lol
I think the reason the fruit are so bouncy in this one is because Pico-8 does not have it's own physics engine and the engine is specifically designed to be limited (With the whole limitation brews innovation thing). And when it comes to making a physics system in an engine that doesn't have a one, if you don't know what you're doing the best you can do is "Am I in a thing? Yes? Get me out of there.", and since everything is touching everything they are constantly entering and exiting each other, causing the bouncing.
I want everyone to know I usually have these Suika weeks on while eating dinner. When Jacob CLUTHED with the grape I fully put down my meal to be entranced in this game in a way no other Suika has made me before. Now I have cold mac and cheese but I wouldn’t trade it for anything else. Edit: I reheated my Mac and Cheese! :3
@@strawberryqueen0382no for sure it was, I was so done when I thought the mac and cheese was cold but then I saw the reheat and I was like we're so back
The issue with the momentum seems like fruits don't lose it over time, only when they impact other ones. So the force isn't loss unless there's a match, so something small stuck at the bottom essentially becomes this supercharged gear that continually spins faster and faster, occasionally making things around it spin Edit: ok I guess the gear metaphor was closer than i thought. Small things going at a decent rpm translate that exact rpm to something larger, and the larger one just gets more force and fucks your run
It also seems like there’s magnetism involved which makes the movement even more chaotic. The way fruits “miraculously” fly across the screen to combine with and the relative calmness when there’s only unique fruits makes me feel like a code is implemented to keep fruits that can be combined moving and draw them unnaturally towards each other. But with all the fruits fighting each other it just becomes a bouncy house of unnatural force.
Considering that this is pico-8 I can almost promise you that the spinning of the fruit is purely visual. There is absolutely no way that they implemented rotational friction and torque transfer in what is essentially Basic. Heck, they had to "cheat" with the collision detection to get it to run at a decent frame rate.
Thanks for playing my demake! Whenever I get to update the game to "fix" the physics, I'll keep the jittery physics as an option as it seems everyone has a love/hate relationship with it.
@@DirectorOfChaos9292 nope. the jittery physics end up jiggling the fruits through gaps and slide around a lot that they merge by themselves. I'm not really sure why friction doesn't seem to work that well in this physics engine the game is using.

I feel like the Suika game genre is burned into my mind now. I have never played the original and yet from watching these videos I have an extensive tier list of which Suikalikes are good and which aren’t.
the way these fruits were being tossed around like it’s fruit salad just made it that much more tense, honestly one of the most stressful suikas to watch you guys play yet, extremely entertaining
If you guys create a Suika-like tier list then we can finally create the ultimate Suika-like, where the evolution just goes through all the different Suika-likes and ends on the Watermelon from the original. Once you create a tier list I'll be all over making something like that.
This suika journey reminds me of a project I’m working on with friends where we create an absurd amount of pieces of media about art galleries that always have the line “this one, this one right here” baked in.
Hi Alpha, hi Jo. Second day of suggesting my own suika clone, Watermelon Monsters on Itch. Just in case you haven't decided yet the last suika game. Also can't wait to see what you prepared for december.
Now that we've gotten so many good suikas in a row I feel the need to get people into Suika month but I already know I'll look crazy telling them "No I swear it gets GOOD"
its interesting to see the different solutions to how to make this game fun. The Touhou game had similar sprites attracted to eachother with a smaller than their size hitbox, this game just removes friction as a factor entirely.
So it's absolutely based on where the center of a piece is it looks like, if a cherry pops up you're done it's just immediately over, same with most medium sized fruits but the watermelon has a lot more give because it's so much bigger and the center of it is all that matters this one looks really fun and a lot more challenging but when things just bounce into place it's so much more hype than it has any right to be for a suika game
I teach kids aged 6-15 who are OBSESSED with suika game and who don't speak English so wouldn't find out about this game. Do you realize I have the chance for the prank of a lifetime??
I agree that if feels like the fruits are trying to escape, but it's not like they are trapped there against their will, it feels more like kids waiting for class to end to go to recess
I think my mind got so much exposion to indie horror games, that I'm expecting any moment the screen to go dark and all the fruits to be bloody as some shadowy figure creeps closer to the screen.
The chaotic nature of this game makes me think that the ultimate suika should have a customizable bouyancy
Oh god. The perfect suika, pieces can go from the weight of an anvil or a helium balloon.
I remember Jacob saying that his perfect suika would have a strength throw slider or something like that

I don’t think they’ve played a tier list maker yet…
They mentioned already that they'll be doing a tier list of every game they've played this year
they're already doing a full year tier list that'd be redundant

I like that they didn't realize each piece has an amount of magnetism and that's why they move so much and pull at each other and go weird.
i didn't realize that either because that's not what i would've expected
Cap
yeah i noticed that too, the movement isnt random, its toward the same piece, thats how the piece far apart can fuse seemingly easily
17:00
That's not the reason they constantly bounce though, the Touhou Suika had loads of magnetism and that didn't bounce constantly

idk why, but watching all the fruits jumping around just bring me so much joy. Great addition to the suika-like genre
I think a really cool Suika idea would be one that starts with watermelon and fuses in reverse so the ultimate goal becomes to get a cherry
