What do ants do to a tree? Do they hurt the tree? Watch this inspection and follow along with Blair to see what he comes up with. Some trees are a tough decision!
The lil piss ant colonies are sure fun We did some weight reduction on an old valley oak here As my buddy is clearing the suckers from a protruding branch, honey bees start coming out of a lil hole right where he was working. Just a lil later, as we removed a sizable branch, as my buddy cut, ants started coming out because we were cutting there nest in half!!
Hello arborist Blair, I see the fun part where you stir in that open wound, and the rascals pour out like water! Now, even you, a seasoned tree guy, had to be getting a rush seeing the incredible numbers right? Well, 1st, Not Carpenter Ants I'm not sure what state that is, but I assure you, in my state, when you see that, the tree is already a goner. Dig below the ground level and you'll find the truth. No clownin, the roots are their main domicile. Multiple queens reside. The live, eat, breed and protect the entire root system. And believe me. They are eating that tree. Whoever says they are not, are presently misinformed. Easy to prove im delusional. Dig at ground level and expose the roots. Now Again. I don't know your location, but at this location, The end of trees begins
Makes me shudder. Sometimes I get up into a big old oak in the cold morning only to discover that the tree becomes a highway of ants when it warms up a bit. Speaking of bit, yep, they attack in droves. A quick roped escape is sometimes needed.”I’m outa here!”
Hey my red maple tree has these tiny holes in a part of a place where a branch used to be and they aren’t as big as carpenter ants but bigger than regular home ants should I be worried and do you know what type of ant it could be?
What about when there is a bee hive inside a rotten tree? Many of the Caltapa Bean trees in my neighborhood are over 50 years old and dying. I felt very itchy after watching all those ants crawling around the hole in the tree. LOL
Wondering if you can help me out with a 200 year old walnut tree.Wally is his name and he has some health issues.I have current photos. Please help me save this tree.thanks joevstafford
Probably velvety tree ants, Liometopum occidentale. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liometopum_occidentale They nest in rotting wood within large, living oaks in California. I have not seen them actually damage a tree.
tembofly great feedback, thank you. Filling in answers and additional information is what I’m really hoping for with this community of like minded Tree people.
So what do you do about the ants and the hole? Is there a way to fill the hole so the tree can grow cambium, close the old wound, and help prevent water penetration causing further rot? I'm having a similar issue with an old Ash tree. It shades our entire backyard. I'd rather not cut it down but worry about the house and kids. Any insight would be appreciated. I live in Dallas, TX
I got a bad infection on ankle that almost turned into cellulitis.....by a couple of small fore ant bites so YES get rid of them before you cut a tree.
Thanks for taking the pain to further our knowledge - another superb, informative video.

All this time I thought carpenter ants killed trees. Mind blown. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
How do you take care of the carpenter ants?
I have ants crawling out of a branch from my young persimmon tree. What if I plug a hose into the hole and seal it will it drown the ant colony?
Once again another very thorough, informative evaluation. Thank you for posting the video. Well done, keep them coming.
This is SO informative thank you for taking the time to do this!!

Wow! Thank you for your input! I've noticed you have a crazy-ant channel, too. Please let everyone know what you know. The more info, the better. ❤🎉😊
So what does it mean? Does it necessarily mean plague? Or do they just live in it?
Imperator RazZehir the ants live on a weakness. They don’t cause it
@@arboristBlairGlenn Thank you for the intel
Disappointed you didn’t recommend methods of exterminating the ants without harming the tree.
I can’t talk about pest control. Need to be licensed pest control operator to make recommendations.
That Was So Cool Excellent Video Footage Of Ants Coming Out!

Wait until they all go in. The put a bug fogger in the hole. Maybe two. That will cure it!

THookeJr you can spray for the ants but best to leave the cavity open. Sealing it up just hides the problem and does not stop decay.
do ants eat termite larvae?
I cut up a big dead standing oak tree Monday that was full of those fire ants and oh yeah they are no fun
fitter it out fire ants are worse than what we have. Be careful!
