They had 7 songs hit the top 10, of which "Dream On" hit #6 on February 14, 1976 (Valentines Day of course). It absolutely upset their hard core hard rock fans that they would re-release a ballad but it was a brilliant move at the time and brought them thousands of female fans.

This song is so special to me. I try not to get upset that it's used in ads, covered by less talented musicians etc, because it introduces new listeners, and lots of young listeners to a perfect example of true songwriting and real music.
If you were implying that music like rap and hip hop aren't "real music", then consider this. Musicians in those fields put just as much soul and take just as much pride in their art as any other genre's writers. Sure there are also bad musicians, but they don't hold a candle to the best of their group and that's true to every music genre. You may not like different genres, and that's 100% ok as everyone has their own opinion and likes their own music, but don't write it off as music that isn't "real".
