Watching this again on TCM. There is no better musical comedy performance ever captured on film. She was captivating . She was magnetic. She was unknown. She was 21. Even the studio didn't know what they had. Originally wanting Shirley Maclaine and persuaded to use Streisand. The voice, the talent, the comic genius no one could touch. As they say.......the rest is history. 💙
Fifty years between two viewings of this treasure. Maybe a little perspective has helped me appreciate Funny Girl all the more. Watching some of the scenes brought some tears while I remembered back over the decades. The first time I saw this movie was with a number of my 8th grade classmates on a Saturday in early-1970. I'm guessing it waa a re-release which was quite common in that era. I had a date and her Heaven Scent perfume was on my shirt and I noticed that when I got home. I put that shirt in a dry cleaners' bag and never wore it again.
I was a senior in High School in 1968 when it premiered. In Buffalo, in January went to the movie house 29 times sometimes walking in the snow, sometimes when I had money, by bus. A few different people went along because I drove them nuts. Back then great movies could play for a year as was the case with this. On 12/31/99 to bring in the new century, which wasn't true, I flew to Las Vegas, stayed with friends BECAUSE I paid $2500. for a floor seat Row 15 seat 1. I and a couple dozen others were forced to sit next to a large box with a window facing the stage in the MGM GRAND arena. A man at a podium inside had Q cards for her. WE WERE NOT HAPPY CAMPERS, sound was compromised and show was a huge disappointment to us needless to say.
I love Glee but the amount of people saying they're only here because of Glee is sad. This is one of the most iconic and influential movies of all time guys.
Atleast the new generation found out about it either way. I came here from Glee but so what if I came here from Glee? I think this is great and that's what matters
Here from the random mention from Rose from dragrace season 13. Was brought up Christian in small town New Zealand and literally this is the first ive heard of this or heard Barb sing. Would love to hear more recommendations.
WHAT AN AMAZING TALENT AND BREATH OF FRESH AIR SHE WAS WHEN IT PREMIERED IN 1968. IT WAS OBVIOUS THAT WITH THIS PERFORMANCE SHE WAS DESTINED TO BECOME A LEGEND. THANK GOD FOR ALL OF US ! 💜🩷💜🩷💜🩷💜🩷💜🩷
I was in high school. Wow! About the same time another movie came out. 2001 Space Odyssey! We knew we would never be alive in the year 2001 or that the world would not be here. Three of us guys was double dating and after 2001 Space Odyssey we went to Shoney's to eat and had a big discussion about how long we were going to live. Believe it or not I'm the only one still alive and 20 years ago I had stage 4 malignant melanoma and I'm the only one that's supposed to be dead. That just goes to show you that you never really know what's going to happen in the future especially about life and death... I am 70 years old and of course I have no idea how long I will be on this Earth. Just sayin..ps.. I am from the deep south and in the early seventies I had an import-export business and did a lot of traveling especially in New York City. I was on a city bus and after school a bunch of girls got on the bus from a Catholic school and they all looked and talked like Barbra Streisand. I think I was somewhere in Brooklyn.. I remember I had a crush on Barbra Streisand because I thought she was one of a kind but after I found out they were hundreds that look and act just just like her so the crush was not as much as it was when I thought she was a one-of-a-kind.. isn't it funny the way the brain works? Well anyway my pee brain. Hehehe.. funny girl is still one of my favorite movies and Barbra Streisand is one of my favorite actresses and singers..🤔🤔🤗😀😀👍👌💖💖

@@katelynpringle5506 i loved it! Barbra Streisand was amazing. I didn't like the romance too much so I would have prefered that the movie focused more on her carrier than her love story but it was still good. It enters my list of favorite musicals :) (sorry if I made mistakes, I'm still learning english)
I haven't seen the movie, but have a cassette of Barbara's songs, it looks like those songs didn't become so popular as the musical comedies of " May fair lady", or " Sound of Music". As well as the accompanying songs.
i think that’s kinda on purpose he’s supposed to be elegant above everything else but also deceitful and cunning…he was also in love with her in real life. so yeah “he creeps me out but she doesn’t see it” is perfect casting lol.
A fabulous film. Amazing singing! Streisand really is the Maria Callas of popular music.
This movie changed how I viewed the movie musical. Barbra is in her element and IS the movie.
One of the greatest, if not the greatest, movie debuts of all time.

agree! Im here becasue im a massive musical fan and barbra streisand fan and my nan brought me up on these movies. And i LOVE Funny Girl
So how is it bad if people of the new generation are going back to it, whatever the means is for the discovery? How is that sad lol
Atleast the new generation found out about it either way. I came here from Glee but so what if I came here from Glee? I think this is great and that's what matters
it is my fault that i didn't know about this?-
I mean, why belittle what brought people here? Is it really sad to you that more people are appreciating this iconic and influential movie?
Here from glee 11 years later

Omar Al Sharif was great man and actor, may God have mercy on you, Rest in peace.
only sad thing about Omar is how "not well" he aged!!
@deborahcepeda4219 it's known that beautiful and handsome people age badly
I’m literally watching this on tv rn

Okay, is there anyone here from Glee that actually watched the movie? Cause I GOTTA know what you thought.

Yes, It’s an iconic film and Barbra was amazing in it

Don't rain on my parade is a pretty big song
what planet are YOU from?
Yes they did…lol
Ckassic bro♥️
EXACTLY ! HELLO GORGEOUS, I WITHOUT DOUBT AGREE
Barbara was so elegant and regal on this film BUT the guy that portray Arnstein just creeps me freaking out, omg
@@mennakhaled9313 alzheimers! thanks, that's so sad
Omar Sharif is awesome in Lawrence of Arabia and Dr Zhivago
@@perfecttrc as well as this one!!
Barbra was great, but, to me, the film was miscast. Not William Wyler's best.
i think that’s kinda on purpose he’s supposed to be elegant above everything else but also deceitful and cunning…he was also in love with her in real life.

Where , where... take my money!

First time I heard it was Idina Menzel in 2008
Wow The Band’s Visit was right Omar Sharif IS really hot
Lea Michele needs to be the new funny girls. She's perfect for this character!

I don’t really like Barbra Streisand but this film is really good
I’m not crazy about her but I agree about the movie
how is that remotely even possible?
Old movie
The second half wasn't even that funny. I just watched the movie and now I am SADDD :(
I like both movies equally
It’s about a real person’s life…that’s what happened to her but much worse
She must've gotten this from Glee
This was made in 1968 funny girl
THE ORIGINAL MADE
Not glee
what planet do YOU reside on?
I'm here because of Regine Velasquez
The only thing worse than Barbra Streisand's acting ... is watching 2 hours of Barbra Streisand acting.
